  • mjpTennis makes a good point: "....as it is landing underneath you, the leg/foot should also be pulling back already so that when it strikes the ground it is moving with the ground and not against it." You can't do this if you are over-striding with a low cadence.
  • Oh, and check this out: http://www.runningtechniquetips.com/ Martin's book is excellent!
  • What you might want to try to do is to pay attention to having your feet land more or less underneath your hips. Doing this will naturally increase your turnover, which is without a doubt better for your running. My last race had a cadence of 182 and even on long runs, it's up near 180. Today's 10 miles was an average of…
  • +2 mind makes everything..
  • Chilly Chili 5K, Orange, CT - 23:53 (Garmin time) I did this same race last year in 31:53 (my first 5K). After I finished, a guy came in a few seconds behind me and caught up to thank me for inspiring him during the race. I think it was because I was the only idiot out there in shorts and a singlet! It was 28F with an 18…
  • I agree with this. I have my garmin connect account linked with sportracks.mobi When I fire up sporttrack on the pc, my workouts are downloaded automatically. I would think for a triathlete, sporttracks would be perfect.
  • Chilly Chili 5K, Orange CT on New Year's day. Looking for something 23ish...but my real goal is to pile on the suffering and see how much I can endure. :o)
  • You might try http://www.runningwarehouse.com/ . I have purchased a few pair from them. The shoes come in two days and they include a shipping tag to return them if they don't fit. As far as suggestions go, I guess I look at shoes a little differently. If you establish a good running base with good form, then a neutral…
  • ^^this When I am running the world could be about to blow up and I wouldn't know anything. I like it that way.
  • Actually, tss is also available with sportracks, as well. DC Rainmaker writes a little about it here: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2009/12/sports-tracks-in-depth-ten-little.html It's number 5 on the list. Normally tss is worked out using power data from cycling, but for runners, it uses heart rate, which is not nearly as…
  • Thanks Doug! As I said above, storage isn't so much the issue. One thing I just remembered was that sport tracks has a for a fee cloud storage system, so maybe I should check that out, as well. And thanks for the link to Dave's miles challenge. Being a FIRST runner, I am always going to come up short in that dept.!
  • So, do you find the service worth the price? I do a fair amount of cycling and plan to branch out into triathlon and duathlons down the road, so I can see the value there also. Storage isn't really the issue, looking for tss-type info is. :o)
  • I have a particular interest in training load info, which R-A doesn't appear to have. Firstbeat Athlete does this, as well as the Sport tracks plug-in, which I already have. The attraction to me, as far as Training Peaks goes, was having my runs online and being able to access training load where ever I find myself.…
  • Thanks..I was thinking about firstbeat, as well. Since I already paid for sport tracks, I'll probably just reload everything when I get my machine back. All my activities are on Garminconnect. For me, the main drawback for training peaks is the price. 20 bucks a month is just silly. I was hoping to hear from anyone who…
  • one foot in front of the other, right? :o) I have found it helpful, if I am running a new route, to take a ride in my car along my planned route. It gives the brain a chance to understand the challenge. Every time I have run my longest distance, it was the hardest run I have ever done. The next time, when my mind and body…
  • I have six pairs of shoes, varying from very minimal to very cushioning, that I rotate through. Two pair of virrata's do the lion's share of the work, and the other four pair serve to mix things up a bit. We are encouraged to mix up running surfaces, training regimens, etc., so I think it just makes sense mix up the stress…
  • Registered: Jan 1 - Chilly Chili 5K, Orange, CT (llooking for a 5k PR...this run will set the paces for marathon training) Mar 22 - Savin Rock Half Marathon (B race), West Haven, CT May 3 - Cox Marathon, Providence RI (A race) Planned: June - Gaspee Days 5K, Warwick, RI (C race) Fall - signed up for the NYC marathon…
  • If the course was certified by USATF, then this may help: http://www.usatf.org/Products-/-Services/Course-Certifications/USATF-Certified-Courses/Procedures-Manual/The-Shortest-Possible-Route.aspx GPS is definitely not accurate enough to determine is a course is measured properly, unless the course is really way, way off.
  • congrats!! I signed up for the lottery today. :o)
  • A (Accel 2nd Surge) gel on the starting line and one half way through, as well as some gatorade along the way. I practiced this well in advance. It's not necessary, but, from everything I have read, it is a worthwhile practice, in terms being able to run faster.
  • I know some people who have been injured but were able to maintain some of their fitness with cross-training (eliptical, stationary bike, etc..) Hope it heals quickly for you!
  • Running every day is too much of a good thing for me personally, but I can't imagine that running a very slow mile on a day you normally would take off would cause any problems. And +1 on the laundry concerns...not so sure swmbo would be too impressed with additional work load!
  • Wow, i thought it was just me!! I always assumed it something to do with the watch and not me. Thanks for the link.
  • My main goal is to stay healthy and enjoy the effort. :o) My time-based goals are to qualify for Boston and run a sub-20 5K. I figure both goals are doable within the next 5 years and I am not in any particular rush.
  • I use Sport Tracks with various plug ins (training load, weather, record book, etc.) All my runs and workouts are also on Garmin Connect.
  • Thanks for the runspiration! I watched the Iron Man coverage with my wife and Hines Ward said something about being surprised at hard it was. I said to my wife that I couldn't get over how hard it is to run 10 miles at a good clip, never mind an Iron Man. I don't think I made my point very well. Only a runner would…
