At its core it's just boiling water + rice + waiting until the water is absorbed, and there's usually instructions on the bag. Your first two attempts will suck and then you'll get the hang of it :) And yes, a normal frying pan is just big enough to cook one serving (~300 calories) of rice. To cut down on calories even…

If cost is a concern, here's a very cheap one-pan meal that got me through grad school. It's not haute cuisine but, as far as bachelor meals go... - cook rice in stock with a drop of oil in the pan (I like to toast the grains and add a little onion, but up to you) - plate the rice, add another drop of oil in the pan and…

But I like the starchy water... Add carrot, onion, oil and condiments and you've got an instant sauce.

In keeping with the current discussion, my opinion on hot (almost) anything:

I bought new hiking shoes and got a discount because they scanned at the wrong price, so... I'm grateful for clerical errors :)

As a quick note, here's an article comparing excess mortality with official covid death tolls. While in developed countries there's a pretty clear correlation between excess deaths and official death tolls, some developing countries might be undercounting (though there are, obviously, other factors).

This, and can confirm that you should turn down the heat (except maybe for hungarians). But, for romanian, you can't go wrong with salata de vinete, and it's not too hard to make.

Tbh, I could already live in most places I would want to - double citizenship, one in an EU country and one in a commonwealth country - it's more about where I could have a good and stable income... Meh, I'm ok where I'm at and have done my share of globetrotting over the years.

Heh, my first thought was that it's definitely happened for alcohol to trigger a "cleanse"... of sorts...

Reading through this thread... I have a confession to make. The last time I had any brush with biology of any kind was nearly half my life ago as part of a general education class. And I didn't do too well because memorization isn't my thing. In short, I don't have the right to an opinion on the effectiveness of preventive…

Idk about that... Most historical conspiracies weren't kept hidden nearly as well as we might think. When they were successful, it was usually due to the conspirators being able to keep enough details of the conspiracy hidden for it to go through, or of the warnings not being taken seriously enough. To give the best-known…

Pompeii, the life of a Roman Town, by Mary Beard. About halfway through and loving it, very engaging and accessible, and I love that it focuses on the everyday life of regular people. Relics, by Tim Lebbon. Barely started it so no opinion to give.

Let's start a gang :) One thing I find funny about the sugar debate is that the reason it's a problem for a lot of people is precisely the reason why sugar became so popular and widespread in the first place: it's a compact source of easily digestible calories that doesn't create a feeling of satiety. That was a very good…

I'd say never say never. You can cut down on how often you eat certain things without eliminating them completely. For instance, I had to switch from rice or pasta and meat for dinner to vegetables and meat while I'm losing weight. I miss my starches very much but I like big meals and, I cannot lie, there was no way I…

Grad school was a lot of fun. The stipend wasn't luxurious but it was a living wage and, since I got the course requirements out of the way early on, I had basically nothing but free time aside from a perfunctory two hours of TA-ing a week.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrRkVNVboFs ETA: I figured out how to embed youtube videos in an mfp post!

I'm not reading 500+ posts, only things I care about are: 1. is it tasty? 2. is it cheap? Don't eat burgers much but if they came up with a cheap, non-perishable meat replacement, I'd be all over that. Remembering to take the meat out of the freezer a few hours before cooking is a pain in the backside. ETA: and yeah, meat…

Oooh, I just thought of one that'll be very unpopular. Peanut butter is one of those things that you either grow up with or you don't. I know maybe two people who grew to like it as adults, and I'm not one of them.

I like it in tea form :p

I don't log soup cubes, diet drinks, etc... even if they do have minute amounts of calories. With things in the 5-10 calorie range, I figure they'd make me sick before making a significant contribution.

Healthy is debatable since I do like my drinks, especially now that it's summer and I'm on vacation. I cook twice a week, once in the weekend and one weekday depending on my work schedule, make three days worth of dinner at a time leaving me with one "free" day to go out or cook something special (or order takeout if I'm…

To each their own, I love the firmer texture of greek yogurt.

Chicken liver :s

Stinging nettle is a great alternative to spinach but I've never even seen it outside of farmer's markets.

I never know what to answer to this question, I've lived in four different countries as an adult... :) Anyway, I was born and raised in Bucharest and currently live in Montreal.

Meh, I have two toothbrushes because they come in packs of two. ETA: to add to the conversation: impoliteness to servers, cleaners, beggars, etc...

Pasta does need a little fat to help it along, but water, rice and a soup cube is all you need for a flavourful dish, and fresh bread with a crispy crust (ideally still warm) is <3

Speaking strictly from personal experience, starches are probably what's easiest for me to overeat. I can go overboard with nuts and chips simply because of how calorically dense they are, but I definitely feel it afterwards. Bread, rice and pasta, though... yeah, I can eat a ton of it without really feeling full, even…

The potato/cabbage salad and macaroni cheese I grew up with were made with oil+vinegar and feta - respectively - so I'm feeling a little left out of the conversation right now... I'm cool with mayo-based potato salad, but it needs pickles and meat and that's just too much work.
