If you are able to handle the day-by-day fluctuations, I would suggest daily. If a daily weigh-in can have fluctuations then so can a weekly. Going day-by-day, you can see an overall trend. About the heavier people not sweating. I have an unproven/untested theory. You really have to be in good shape to work a really good sweat. From my own experience, if I am out of shape, I wear out before I can get a really good sweat.

For activities not in MFP, I wear a heart rate monitor, select "Circuit training, general" and adjust the calorie burn for what the heart rate monitor states. Actually, I adjust the calories even for activities found in MFP. MFP tends to be a little higher than my heat rate monitor.

I do 5 minutes of light work on an elliptical. Kind of wakes me and gets the heart rate and adrenaline going. Then I run or lift. Allows me to stretch also with a body that is at least slightly warmed up.
