  • I find wearing headphones/listening to music helps me tune out everything else.
  • Cheers -- I had the beer that night :)
  • Thanks for the feedback -- the tips and links are appreciated.
  • Not worth working out if you're tired, so I second that message. Make sure you hydrate, get rest. I've always thought that if you're not on 7 or at the very least 6 hours sleep, it's best to skip the weights.
  • To me it seems totally reasonable to set short term goals that build up to long term goals. You can do it! Also, I've also had a little bit of a credit crunch (trying to pay down student loans and credit cards!) -- I've found that Indian food is a good way to eat healthily and not pay too much out of pocket. (Things like…
  • Also look up "Spartanfam" on youtube.
  • Has your diet been consistent? In addition to watching calories, I would think that paying attention to where the calories are coming from would be important. Are they fat calories? Calories from sugar? Also, I think that to some degree, it's expected that you'd see a slowdown in weight loss as your body adjusts to…
  • I am still reading through this thread. But the original article is completely unscientific. One has to distinguish between WHAT chemicals one is consuming. Further, not all bodies are created equal. Some people might indeed put on weight from diet soda, others may not. I have an allergy to all shellfish, most people do…
  • I have the same issue -- largely because I eat a lot of fruit. I have tried to cut down on added sugars/processed sugars, but because I eat fruit like mango or watermelon, end up going over the recommended intake on MFP quite often. As far as different types of sugar, I note that where some hold that all sugars (i.e.…
  • All the messages here are really helpful -- thank you. Regarding my workout, I usually start with flat bench, then do incline -- but it makes sense to change up the order. If I may ask one more question -- for the incline, I've always been told that the bar is the way to go. Is this true? Is using dumbells much less…
  • Everyone needs to start somewhere. I would just ignore others and do what you need to do. As for getting help, if you can't afford a trainer who can give you a basic workout routine to get you started, I'd start looking at books and devising a rounded routine that has you hitting all the different muscle groups. I really…
  • Ghostery is awesome for blocking adds. You can also try NoScript. I love pizza, but domino's is gross, so the ads don't bother me. :)
  • Note -- this is not a plug for a website (I am not affiliated in any way with it), but I really like: http://www.101cookbooks.com/main_courses/ I tend to like my foods more boldly flavored, so I tend to adapt recipes like this to my liking -- but I've used this site to make up things I like.
  • That's a useful link. The bill that passed in Congress that allows distributors to _not_ label GMO foods can, as I understand it, be challenged in six months-time, so there is some hope that consumers will be allowed some choice in purchasing.
  • Seedless fruits are produced by increasing the number of chromosomes in the plant. Chomosome doubling is accomplished through manipulation, yes, but the plant is not considered genetically modified. Genetically modified plants have DNA from a different species inserted into the genome. Bt Corn* is GMO because it has…
  • I don't get most of my info from Wikihow. Here's a resource for getting non-GMO seeds: http://www.councilforresponsiblegenetics.org/ViewPage.aspx?pageId=261

  • No matter what -- make sure that the fish you eat is not farmed!

  • I was also going to suggest a homemade soup. I recently purchased an immersion blender -- which is great for smoothies and soups. For a quick and healthy soup: heat a tiny bit of oil, add chopped onion and saute until tender. Add in some chopped garlic, stir for a couple minutes. Add some low sodium, organic chicken broth,…
  • One thing I've done is to just cook a little bit more in the evenings, and to take leftovers the next day. (This presumes that what you're making for dinner is healthy). As for recipe ideas. I've made this a few times lately, and take it to lunch with a side of mixed greens (trader joe's herb salad with a dash of balsamic…
  • Here's a link: http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/stretches-for-achilles-tendon-problems I had this problem for a while. Ultimately, it took getting better shoes (I switched brands from New Balance to Asics, and have been happy with those), rest, and stretching. I'm finally back to running, but it took a good 2 months.…
  • One more question (if anyone is still reading this): On days that I don't fast, I find that I tend to stay at or just above (within 200 cals or so) of what MFP calculates I need to eat in order to lose .5lbs/week. But on the days that I fast, I fall far below my calorie requirements for the day. Though 6 days of the week I…

  • those links are very useful. Thanks!
  • How many grams of sugar in that?
  • Agree with all of this here. My guess is that the McD's chicken wrap is full of added starches, fillers, and things you don't want to be eating.
  • That's super impressive Cris -- and inspirational to see others do it.

  • In terms of what you should know....has anyone mentioned stretching? Jogging is much higher impact than swimming, so a good stretch before and after are key.
  • This is all really helpful: Ndj and Cris, the leangains site is pretty convincing, and retiree, I concur that one can't just use fasting (if one does it) to just eat junk! If anyone else has more stories/experience to share, it would be welcome.
