  • I agree with talking to the treatment team, but if you're up on your feet you can't really go wrong with walking.
  • I did that too a few years back. I don't think I've ever sweated so much. I can confirm you are definitely getting one hell of a workout there!
  • Thanks :D Relieved it's not just me! I'll grit my teeth and get on with fighting through this and try not to be too disheartened.
  • I like the steam room at my gym - to me it's kind of a luxurious treat, a reward for all the good work I do exercising. I tend to use it at the end of the week for a nice relax. So in a way it does help with my weight loss because it's part of what makes going to the gym fun and not a chore.
  • Well, I don't know about the official answer or medical reasons, but I do know that when I really upped my working out and added in weight training my weight loss slowed up a lot for a couple of months. I still lost a little, but nothing compared to what you'd expect for the defecit. I just stuck with it and when all of a…
  • yeah, my take on it is that one of the big problems with sugar is the "empty calories" thing. A lot of the time with the foods that have high sugar, you're getting calories, but you're not getting any nutrition. Fruit's obviously a major exception to that as that sugar content comes along with loads of other stuff that…
  • I totally get what you mean. This is why I choose not to really log calories. I find it really easy to drive yourself mad with the numbers and the tiny details. And I find obsessing over food can be really counterproductive. I manage OK with doing it a bit more by feel - some days I'm bound to be under my calories, others…
  • I think in the case of people with a smaller amount of loose skin it will certainly make a difference, but in the serious cases I've seen no amount of muscle will solve that. The thing with most of the stuff you listed - resistence exercise, moisturising, drinking water etc - none of that's going to harm you in anyway, so…
  • I'm guessing you don't sew? Time to learn! It's pretty easy to take most things in a little bit. With tops you might find all you need to do is run a machine up the side seams a little further in. Or adding a couple of darts into a shirt is also really simple. You should be able to find loads of instructional videos for…
  • I'm over 40 and been big all my life and I've lost about 60lbs from my highest weight but I still have a fair way to go. I have no sign of loose skin yet. I don't want to count my chickens, but I think I have a good chance of getting away with losing it all without loose skin, or at least minimal. Why? Well, I can look at…
  • Because for many people losing weight is a mental battle almost more than a physical one and a lot of these diets are about achieving the simple physical result of eating in a deficit, but through the approach that suits the particular mental/emotional needs of a person. Some thrive on structure, some thrive on freedom etc.
  • You could try lactose free milk. Over here in the UK you can get that in pretty much any supermarket in the normal milk section. It does taste ever so slightly different when you drink it plain but you don't notice the difference on cereal or in tea or coffee. Much nicer than all those soya, rice etc things and does the…
  • Just make sure you put the same amount of effort as you do when you run - and for the same amount as time as when you run. And I agree, strokes with a straight leg kick tend to be kinder to the knees than breaststroke.
  • I lean towards the second, just keep swimming without a lot of noticable variety to the outside observer - although I am actually doing various things with my technique. For me it's primarily about what I enjoy doing - I enjoy just swimming long and steady and letting my mind empty and just having some "me time" in the…
  • You probably won't need this tip if you used to swim competitively but it's my best one! Always remember that "swimming" means as many different things as walking/running. If you're doing it for exercise, the key thing is how much effort you're putting in - it can be very easy to slip into "walking around the park smelling…

  • I really enjoyed reading that, thank you! I'm thinking of trying some open water swimming next year too.
  • Size definitely matters to me - the bigger the better! I like to swim distance so the more room to stretch out the better, so I love my 50m summer pool. I have swum in a 100yd one too, which is fantastic! Down to a 20m for the winter though and I feel a bit like a lion pacing in a cage.
  • Hiya, I'm a frontcrawler mainly but I do breaststroke for warm-up, cool-down or if I just want a look at the view! But I've noticed my breaststroke has got noticably faster without trying since I started going to the gym and doing some weight work. More muscle seems to impact the breaststroke much more than any of the…
  • Hi Everyone, just joined the group! I've been swimming 2 miles as my standard swim all summer - about four times a week. I'm about 1 hour 15. No loo breaks, but I do have to pause from time to time to sort out the hat that rides up and the costume that rides down. But that's in the 50m pool that's just closed up for the…
  • thank's Yarwell - your other post popped in while I was replying to the first ones - I'm off to have a good look now.
  • Yeah, I know all that, but I'm looking for a rough guide for where to aim at.
  • I'm a big believer that there's a huge difference in what processes go on in a lean body and in a seriously obese body and what is true for one is not neccesarily true for the other.
  • I agree with effervescent... I'm not exactly looking fatter, but I definitely look worse because I've lost from all the parts of my body that were leaner anyway but not from my big problem area - the belly. So I'm mega out of proportion and any clothes that will go round my middle are like tents everywhere else on me. It's…
  • My secret is that there are three important things... 1/ Exercising - for health, not for weight loss. 2/ Eating healthy nutritious foods 3/ "Dieting" to lose weight. Those things are completely separate and don't depend on each other, therefore if I "fail" at one, I don't "fail" at them all. If I feel unwell and don't…
  • Cool, so it's all just a question of psychology and what works for you.
  • Thanks both... "if you like something and try to remove it, that will lead to a binge in most cases" - sounds like a pretty good argument for just never trying to diet!
  • I tried it for a while and lost weight on it but I had to stop because I found my body couldn't handle the fast days. I found I just lost all ability to regulate my body temperature and I would spend the day so cold and shivering, no matter how high I turned up the heating. So, it didn't suit me personally, but the weight…
  • I love swimming - I usually do about 10k a week. Some people find doing lots of laps boring, but I love the sort of meditation of just going back and forth. And it's great for my heart and my blood pressue and my muscle tone, and I get to use the showers at the pool so I don't have to pay for heating all that water at home…
  • I think you might be surprised how quickly you can get back into the swing of swimming. The kind of muscle memory of what you used to do actually comes back pretty fast. I bet you'll find your technique settles a lot naturally as well once you get used to being back in the water. Particularly with front crawl, slowing down…
  • I can't be bothered to get involved in the argument, but if you really want to cut down on sweet foods, the advice I followed was to restrict nothing else while you do it. This works because when you go from eating lots of sugar to no sugar you get really hungry - physically as well as sweet cravings so you need to kind of…
