  • One thing you haven't mentioned is how long you've been sticking to the calorie count. A lot of people get frustrated when the weight loss doesn't start right away, or when it comes and goes. As long as you (a) are accurately measuring the calories you consume, (b) are eating the amount that MFP suggests, and (c) don't…
  • The issue is a little more complicated when you start considering that many who are mentally ill are also on psychotropic meds. These drugs can have a wide range of side effects, but there are quite a few that will slow your metabolism significantly, for example. So, technically while it still is calories in vs calories…

  • Because 2000 calories is less than you think. I'm 183 lbs and 2000 calories is barely enough for me to maintain that weight. I'm eating 1700 or so per day and still losing about 1 lb per week. Enjoy being able to eat 2000 calories and lose weight!
  • Eating for reasons other than the fact I was hungry: Eating because I was bored. Eating while watching TV.
  • Those data are for men of all ages. Young men (who tend not to die from cardiovascular disease, cancer, etc.) die from suicide.
  • The third Harry Potter movie was better than the first. Not to mention that the fourth book was better than the other 6. [man living as child alert!]
  • No Christmas bonus for me. But I can close my door, put my feet up on my desk and take a nap in the afternoon. And that's 365, baby.
  • Instantly. The one month mark is the toughest point for me, though.

  • Once a week, Sunday morning after I have breakfast, wearing a sweatshirt, t-shirt and boxers. Absolute weight matters less to me than relative weight (i.e., change in weight) I never know my exact weight, but I know that I've lost 1.2 lbs since last week, for example. That keeps me from getting caught up in the actual…

  • My big mistake when (re)starting exercise is starting too fast, hurting myself, and stopping. So, the right mindset - taking it slowly and viewing even small steps as progress - is key. One other piece of advice from my life: If you're out of shape, stretching is going to be very important in injury prevention. Don't…
  • I wish you luck, but for me diet soda is such a good way to satisfy my hunger & fill me up, that I wouldn't be able to lose weight without it. Perhaps after I hit my goal weight, I will ditch it, but for now it's such a powerful tool for me. But, more power to you if you want to get off of it. Good luck! -K
  • As a Buckeye fan, I think drinking during (or especially after) that game was mandatory. :) As others have said, it's a lifestyle change, not a diet. In the grand scheme of things, 1 day has a teensy effect. -K

  • I'm sorry to hear that you're in this obviously painful situation. The fact that he handles it himself sometimes isn't necessarily a comment on you. It's possible, if not likely, that he would do the same thing regardless of who his relationship partner is. And, to present a counterpoint to the prevailing opinion,…
  • This seems legit to me. There are certainly times when I go to the gym and leave feeling more tired than when I started. It's a nice thing to say that it gives you energy, but it's unfortunately not true for all of us.
  • FYI: Every time a person (male or female) enters REM sleep they show signs of sexual arousal. So, men get erections many times per night. My bigger concern is that you're waking up so frequently, not that you're waking up aroused. (Interesting fact: in order to see if men have physiological problems that prevent erections,…
  • Thanks for sharing that article. It does a nice job of pointing out why what's been viewed as common knowledge should be questioned. I didn't know the historical context of that result and it's very easy to understand why that result might not hold today. Hopefully this can help people stay motivated who were discouraged…
  • Makes me wish I had 60 lbs to lose :)
  • Bottom line of the scientific work: If you want to use those existing somatotypes to describe your current physique, that's a very reasonable use. They are certainly descriptive. If you want to use them to predict your ability to put on fat or muscle, or your likelihood of maintaining that body type, you might not want to…

  • The quote from Wikipedia is one that I (based on a reading of multiple sources and discussions with those in the field) am saying is accurate. Here is another source from the era in which the somatotyping literature was being formed: Hunt, E. E. and Barton, W. H. (1959), The inconstancy of physique in adolescent boys and…
  • I'm somewhat surprised (and impressed) by people who weigh out all of their food. I don't and have no intention to, but kudos to those who can. My solution to the problem is to err on the side of overestimation of amount if I feel it's ambiguous. (Then again, I also don't log my calories from exercise, so I'm almost…
  • I've only read a few pages of the thread, but I'm pretty sure that this one hasn't been mentioned: Dogma. It's mostly a comedy, so most of the time I'm laughing. But, at the end (spoiler alert) when Bartleby (who has been trying for the whole movie to foil god's will) sees god and emotionally apologizes to her, I get…
  • Congratulations and that's a great first post!
