  • Beans, greens, peas, mushrooms... You can also but fortified oatmeal or cereal. I get most of mine by eating a crap ton of veggies and beans. Google vegetarian iron and you'll get lots of lists.
  • I took it years ago and gained 40 pounds in about 5 months. I didn't mind so much since my weight was not a priority at the time, but now I'm still carrying it around  I didn't much like it or my psychiatrist so I ended up weaning off it with my gp and just doing therapy-only approach. A few weeks later my…
  • I love gin and diet tonic! If a bar doesn't have diet tonic, I prefer to drink it straight then with regular tonic. Regular sodas taste funny to me and irritate my bladder big time. And gin is the best alcohol imo. I've notice the older I get the more I appreciate bitter flavors like gin and black coffee. Used to love wine…

  • Hope you guys had/ are having fun in Chicago. That's my hometown! There's a ton of unhealthy food here so it sounds like you guys did a great job of avoiding it! I travel a lot too and I love your tips. I stay at Marriotts because they have free breakfast and a concierge lounge with food in the evening. Boiled eggs and…
  • If you don't feel like venturing out of the house, try some house cleaning, or develop a hobby (I draw/ paint). Volunteering is also an excellent activity when you're feeling lonely! If you find yourself feeling too lonely to do much of anything besides veg and eat, it is probably time to see a therapist. I did years ago…
  • I've seen the good and bad of the surgery in my family, but each person was extremely sick beforehand. Could they have done it on their own? Obviously, in theory, anyone can. But they wouldn't have. That's the point. You're saying they could just eat less, but people often die of their failure to do just that. I'd rather…
  • Not us city dwellers. Leaving the county to shop would cost so much more with travel and take so much time that it's not practical. I can understand Starbucks. It didn't apply to any place that makes specialty drinks. But charging diet soda and not juice is nonsensical. But I'll pay it because five bucks a month doesn't…

  • Just an fyi, since someone mentioned it, that seitan is wheat gluten (protein). Many vegans dislike the gluten free trend being mixed with vegan options because vegans need that protein. I would suggest looking up low carb vegan and see what you get, then add eggs.
  • Raw onions can upset my stomach within a few minutes. It sucks because i used to love red onion slices on my sandwiches. My father always had an issue with any and all onions. BUT he decided a couple years ago to try to build a tolerance since onions have so many health benefits. But taking it very slow, he was successful…
  • Both products contain dairy. Although arctic zero contains dairy in the form of whey protein and I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
  • I'm honestly surprised people don't realize fish oil has calories. Any kind of oil is going to have calories because it's fat. Fish oil is not a vitamin, it's (mostly) omega 3 fat. Also, I've learned that just because a package says something is 0 calories doesn't mean it actually has no calories. Anything less than 5…
  • I try to stick with cheap, healthy staple items. Potatoes, eggs, beans (dried not canned), and frozen veggies are all super cheap and healthy. If there's an ethnic store near you (asian, indian, mexican, etc), you can often find things like rice and beans even cheaper there. The Mexican produce markets near me always sells…
  • Love tea. I never add sweetener. It just takes away from the natural flavor of the tea imho. I prefer black, but also enjoy white and red tea. I'm not a big fan of flavoring being added to tea (like vanilla or fruit flavors or whatever). I don't think it helps me with weight loss at all. I've always drank a lot of tea and…
  • Wow, telling someone they shouldn't get an education if they're fat seems pretty ridiculous. While there is discrimination against the obese in the job market, it's not like they can't get jobs. I graduated in December 2008, when the economy was in the toilet, and had a job in my field before graduation despite being…
  • I know this is gross, but the reason thongs cause UTIs is because very small amounts of fecal matter get on the thong and travel down to where your urethra is (not to mention other lady parts). I stopped wearing thongs years ago once I learned that they are a poop highway :noway:
  • Wow. I'm really surprised by the people talking about how hellish retail work is, as if hating your job is some kind of excuse to bring the human beings around you down. I worked retail through high school and college, over 10 years, and while some days I did hate it, I would never treat a fellow human being this way.…
  • I needed to read this tonight. Thank you.
  • Everyone is different. Some people need SSRIs. There is nothing wrong with that. No reason to feel guilty. I successfully got off Celexa with cognitive behavioral therapy. Some prefer talk therapy. Whether you stay on the medication or not, THERAPY is very important to teach you alternative coping mechanisms. If you don't…
  • I don't eat meat and have a few vegan close friends who I dine out with regularly. When it comes to eating out, ethnic food is your friend. It's much easier to find a vegan entree at an indian, vietnamese, or thai restaurant. There are also vegan-only restaurants that can be hard to convince meat-eaters to go to, but that…
  • I completely agree. 100 percent. I suggest reevaluating your goals. Also, you can't say because your weight went up a 1-2 lbs in half a week that it's a plateau. Weight naturally fluctuates a few pounds a day And a few days isn't near enough time to know what direction your weight is going. A plateau lasts weeks/months,…
  • *looks at pictures* *jaw drops* :drinker:   Wow. Just wow. Amazing story and the pictures really show how far you've come. Really inspiring. So glad I read your post!
  • Vegetables!!! Also, the limits people recommend for sugar usually only refer to added-in sugar, so natural sugar from fruit wouldn't count. You can clarify with with your doctor, but I'm pretty sure he/she meant added sugar. The AHA has the same recommended limit.
  • My best advice would be to look up calorie informatin before you go out to eat. That's what I do. Then, you know what you're consuming. Also I'd assume food is high calorie anytime you eat out. "Healthy" and "low calorie" are not the same thing. Something can be made of healthy ingredients and still pack a huge calorie…
  • I also use chain restaurants as an estimate for local pizza chains. I recommend not using any homemade pizza or generic pizza as estimates as they tend to have suspiciously low calorie counts. Also, make sure to match the crust i.e. don't use a chain restaurant's thin crust if what you ate was not thin crust. That can make…
  • I also have HS. It is an awful disease and my mother has had numerous surgeries to cope with her's, including removing sweat glands from under her arms. HS is all about imflammation, imo. I guess for some people gluten can cause imflammation. Gluten doesn't affect me at all. For me, cutting down (though not eliminating)…
  • If you're into walking, Leslie Sansone's Walk videos are great. I lke them because they don't involve jumping (I live in an apartment and don't want to disturb my neighbors) and they don't involve a lot of hard steps so no big learning curve. Still make me sweat and some involve strength training. I just use the ones…
  • I personally weigh food. Sometimes a package will say it has 200 grams but when you weigh it, it's actually 250 grams. I feel like if you go by weight it's more accurate. Like with bread, it depends on the size of the slice, so weighing it will give you a better idea of how much you're actually eating.
  • I also like to use mlled flaxseed in my oatmeal/quinoa or in yogurt. Never tried them in a smoothie.
