  • From what I witness it is often actually portion control when women move in with their partners. They can keep the same lifestyle, but the food can change significantly. For example, before I lived with my partner, I would often have more of a meal in the day and only a light salad in the evenings. Or de-frost a pre-cooked…
  • What a load of tosh. Your assumption that people gain weight because they 'let themselves go' is atrociously insulting!
  • Sports Direct all the way for outerwear - racer-back vests for a fiver; leggings from puma or addidas for <20 quid. Bras always from Marks & Spencer's, especially the zip-front ones.
  • First time in the free weights section of the gym! Helped that it was an hour before closing time on a Sunday, so the gym heavies (read: men who make lots of noise, and leave no space for anyone else) weren't around.
  • Running will not make you gain weight. Is your goal just weight loss, or is it increasing fitness? Personally, I was enjoying running (slowly) and was getting better, but my knees were getting worse. This year I joined a gym, and found that walking faster on a high incline (6%-10% depending) burns more calories for me than…
  • On 8th May (2 weeks today!) I go on holidays with my partner, his brothers and parents) to the Canaries. I'm 3lbs away from this mini-goal, which may not be achieved - the scales hasn't moved in several weeks annoying, but I'm definitely healthier (and smaller!) than i was in January!
  • Netflix & chreadmill...
  • It's good but make sure you have some sort of incline. The real world is not 0% so the treadmill shouldn't be. Start at 2% minimum and gradually build up. I often gradually build up speed and incline over 10-15 mins until i get to 10 mins at 8%, then 10 mins at 10%, then back to 8% for as long as i can. This helps push up…
  • I don't understand why people respond to a thread to state that they don't have the answer because it doesn't apply to them. Is it boredom? Is it loneliness? Is it superiority? It's very strange.
  • HA where is that? westmeath or longford or somewhere? I walk 30-35 mins each way to gym as I've only recently bothered to try to get a driving licence. When going with boy, it's about 5 mins drive. There are gyms much closer which I contemplated knowing I will be mostly walking, but as above they don't have pool, they are…
  • Weather was GORGEOUS! Spend couple of hours on saturday afternoon having a couple of beers in the sun with friends. Well worth it. Sunday was a day full of gardening while the boy was at work. We had put together a new picnic table, so I spent 3 hours painting that (took 5 coats!), 1 coat on the back gate, some planting,…
  • Some of my new mum friends have found M&B groups that meet in the park for a group work out. All the prams around them and they can jump in and out of the class without judgement because they're all in the same boat. Another has a gym where you can bring babies (idelaly sleeping!) to the class at her gym. Might be worth…
  • What's body pump like? It's on in my leisure centre, but I don't know what it is? Anoyed last friday that I couldn't make my first Yoga class as I was stuck at work. They're included in membership if I show up, but I must pay extra if I miss it. Tonight trying my first Zumba class. Wednesday my first Aquafit class. All…
  • So i went to my first Spin class tonight. Wasn't bad. Everyone was very welcoming to the first-timers, my legs were pretty weak and it was tough going, but not as bad as I feared Even contemplating returning!
  • Depends on the quality - I have joined a very cheap gym but it was so grim I didn't enjoy being there. That put me off for years. I joined a new one in February, for a little extra (£45 per calendar month, for gym/pool/classes) and because it is a nicer space and better quality, i enjoy going there. The atmosphere is…
  • How so? My leisure centre has a huge array of classes that I want to start trying out to find what i like. They're all included in my membership anyway. There is a spinning class tonight - i'm really curious about spinning, but it also really scares me! I'm neither fit not healthy, and I get the impression most people who…
  • Peeps. I'm in Italy for 5 days for work. Meetings in conference room in hotel, dinners are pre-booked and chosen by organisers. The food, the wine... mamma mia! Guidance?? I'm trying to stay focused and logging (guessing, mostly). The 'gym' in this hotel is 1 treadmill, 1 bike - I arrived yesterday and did a treadmill…
  • All the time. Our free weights section (where i have never gone) is small, and populated by men. I've never seen a woman there. Most of them seem alright, and just focused on their work, but there are 2 gobshites that make so much bloody noise! I hear them over my music or tv show, and often get a fright with the banging…
  • But what are you referring to? Burning calories how, where? Are you comparing the same conditions?
  • Gym is minimum 1 hour. Sometimes cardio only but minimum burn of 500 cals and heart rate over 170. Sometimes i walk there and back which is 30 mins each way. If I have the car then i might spend a little longer, perhaps doing more strength training and having a swim after.
  • 1lb in 2 weeks can be very frustrating. Today i am 1lb lighter then on 10th february. I am quite frustrated too as i have been careful with weighing and logging, and regular gym sessions. I joined gym on 10th and have been up 3-4 lbs since so i wonder if that has affected my pattern.. or wishful thinking. Anyway i am down…
  • Marks & Spencers. I have never found a sports bra in a sports shop that holds me in as securely as good ol' m&s. I go for very high impact, high front rise bras. The back tie 3-hook ones are good, especially when the straps are 2 way (regular and cross) but my favourite is front zip racer back.
  • Joined a new leisure centre on 10th Feb, including my first real gym visit in about 10 years. About to go there now for my 8th gym session in 11 days. Going ok...
  • This is how i did it. Before, i wanted to be slim. I kept on smoking, and kinda did some small diet changes, but nothing much really. When I wanted to get fit, that's when it all changed. I didn't (and don't) want to be a certain size, I want to do and achieve certain things. To do that i need to be fitter and stronger. To…
  • Completely true. I talked about not smoking for years 'by THIS time' or 'by THAT milestone'. But I didn't want to. You have to want it, and then you'll find you can.
  • It's appalling. You should write to her. Or anonymously use the whistleblowing policy.
  • Oh, I believe it. My partner is a heavy smoker with a far greater lung capacity than me, and is in average, fine health. But that doesn't equate healthy. Just means it hasn't caught up with you yet.
  • This is codswallop. It's entirely up to you. I quit last year cold turkey after smoking for 15 years, and I very slowly lost a stone. Quitting an addiction is willpower and commitment to change. Some people replace it with a growing food addiction. You could replace it by increased physical activity. If you believe not…
  • Yes, I was just thinking that! I didn't use any butter with the vegetables, or oils, or creams. Just veg with a little stock and plenty of seasoning. It's a revelation how low cal they are. I thought the potatoes would have been problematic. 6 portions, roughly 250 cals per portion. I froze in sealed bags, and 3 for…
