Number one tip I always give new runner is to slow down! When I first started running, I thought it was some sort of weakness to walk. What I didn't figure out until I got a GPS watch is that I had to walk because I was going way too fast. I slowed down, and my runs got much longer. Speed will come later. If you get to the…

Great read for sure. It really makes you think about the running shoe industry. I still wear my Asics as well, but I watch my form much more now. I'm not sure I was ever a heel striker. My husband was though and he could never run more than a quarter of a mile without a lot of pain before reading the book. Changed his…

I have reached my goal weight of 135. I'm 5'9" tall and wear a six 6 jeans. I say it's always better to make your weight goal a little higher and re-evaluate when you get there. I moved my goal weight several times. What 150 looks like on one body type may look totally different than on another body type. Good luck on your…

Wear base layers--Under Armour, Nike, etc.--and layer on top of them. I usually wear them with fleece over them because they are both lightweight and do not absorb/hold sweat and or precipitation. Definitely hat (or fleece headband) and running gloves. I keep my iPod under my fleece so no worries about moisture for me.…

I agree with Hal Higdon plan. That's what I used for my first half marathon. All you need is 16 weeks at the most. You can do it since you have been running regularly already. If your goal is to finish a half, I have no doubts you could do it. Do it!!! You won't regret it!

I get too much fiber a lot because I love Fiber One granola bars. I've cut back because too much can be bad for you overall. I thought it was over 35g per day, but someone else mentioned 45g. I don't think it affects weight loss because I've been losing okay, and it also helps you to feel full longer. The other issues it…

Yes, Hal Higdon and SmartCoach. Used both of them for training for a half. Worked great! Good luck to you!!

Amazing results! The 30DS is awesome!

I added all the ingredients calories together to get total calories. Then I measured how much it made (mine was 10 cups). Then I divided the total calories by 10 cups. So I knew it was around 260 per cup of chili. I love homemade chili!

You need to add in speedwork, hills or tempo runs once a week. I've found this article and calculator to be an awesome tool for knowing what pace you should be training at: http://www.runnersworld.co.uk/general/rws-training-pace-calculator/1676.html It also describes the different kinds of runs that you can do. I would…

Yes! Every time I quit smoking, I would gain 5-10 lbs. I would start smoking again, and not lose anything (of course). Over the course of a few years, this looked like an extra 25 pounds! So, you are doing great! This last time, I started running right after quitting (about a year ago) and I didn't gain! Also, running has…

Great job! That's proof that the scale is NOT the only measurement!

If you are not doing it already, try couch to 5K. Try to not land on your heels as it sends shocks up your legs. Attempt midfoot or slightly on the ball of your foot and roll through. Your foot is a natural shock absorber, but landing on your heels takes that away. If you are getting discouraged during a run, slow down…

Great book, very inspiring. It made me rethink ever spending $135 on running shoes. I just buy what's on sale at Kohl's with a 30% off coupon, and I'm doing just fine. I'd like to try some minimalist shoes one day, but I'm too cheap! I can't even imagine what they go through in Leadville. I have climbed a few14'er…

Keep looking for the pictures. I'm sure they are somewhere. :)

Great job!! Woo-hoo!!! :)

I believe it's more cardio than strength training. You can increase the calorie burn of your walks by pushing strollers, but I'd just count it as bonus burn and not try to calculate it.

I think the new "normal" weight is overweight. It doesn't make it okay to be overweight just because 2 out of 3 Americans are overweight or obese. Normal is not good in this case! It's good that we are all here because we don't want to be normal anymore! I get comments about how I don't need to lose weight, and I'm not…

Great job! Keep it up! You look wonderful and healthy.

I will start getting little aches in knees or ankles and I know i need to switch. I give myself plenty of time to break them in before I'll use them for a long run. I'll check the treads to see how they are worn down. After reading Born to Run, I don't put as much emphasis on my shoes, and it seems to be working okay for…

Great job! Not only lost weight but you look so much younger as well. Keep it up! :)

There's been a lot of articles lately about how running may actually be GOOD for your knees. Everything is in moderation though. If your knees start hurting and it doesn't go away shortly after running, then I would either lessen duration or pace or skip it altogether for a low impact exercise. If you ice your knees after…

My stomach is my problem area, so it was my worst part to begin with. I had a c-section, so I don't think that helps. My abs have never been the same since! I am almost at my goal weight (at my first goal weight but decided I might need to still lose some) but I can still look six months pregnant if I forget to suck it in.…

I personally believe that the overall week is a better indicator than day by day, but it's just easier to keep track of daily deficits or overages. So, yes, I think you can make up for extra calories today (or tomorrow or the next day) from yesterday. As long as you do well for the week, then I think you are okay.

Train right and make sure you fuel right for runs and recoveries. There are a ton of great articles online about how and what to eat while training. Those long runs burn a lot of calories!! That's the nice part. There are training plans for half marathons too (I see someone has already mentioned Hal Higdon). They are about…

Do you have a phone with apps? You can use something like MapMyRun or RunKeeper to figure out your pace and amount of time you ran. Then you can search "running" and find your pace, and enter your minutes. RunKeeper gives calories burned if you enter your weight into the program. It will give you a good enough estimate.…
