  • I wish I did! I actually came down with a cold two evenings before the race. I still completed it (note profile pic) because my parents came to watch me run. But it was a rough one. I have high hopes for this year though! My first race this year is the HM where I have my PR so I'm hoping to cut the time off of that one and…
  • Thanks everyone! @scott091501 There was one store in Syracuse (about an hour away) that sold them but they stopped selling them around this time in 2014. I haven't been able to find any other location near me. I am visiting my family on Long Island this week and they have Tri shops so I plan to check them out Friday and…
  • Thanks for the input guys! I know that 5mm is the max thickness when wetsuits are legal, but should close to 5mm be the aim? Or should I be looking for something thinner? Since I live in upstate NY and my legs sink, I was thinking the closer I am to 5mm and increased warmth and buoyancy, the better.
  • What do you mean gym activities? There are a lot of Tri athlete type watches that can track swimming, running, and cycling if you mean something like that. If you mean something outside of that then I don't know what type of device would help. I have a Suunto ambit 2s watch that can track everything that I need. It works…
  • I have the amphipod vest too. I also have a red band that stays on my arm facing traffic and a flashing one for my ankle facing traffic. I have a cheap headlamp, it does the job but its nothing special. I saw some LED shoelaces that I wanted to look into a bit more but may be worth purchasing as well.
  • Reading everyone else's methods, I feel a little pathetic. I bring some sort of fuel for 10+ mi runs, mainly since I'm still trying things out to find my optimal fuel for races. I eat before most Saturday runs which are my long runs and also my only morning runs. If it's less than 5 miles I won't eat but if it's more I'll…
  • +1 also things like breakfast burritos, quiche etc... could be really helpful.
  • It sounds like you're overthinking this. Just type in your current weight into MFP, type that you want to lose 10lbs, select a 0.5lb/week loss rate and try to eat that number of calories + any exercise calories you earn. If 1700 is what you'd need to maintain the weight you want then yes, eating that consistently will…
  • The gain is probably water weight from starting a new work out routine, completely normal so no worries. It should come off shortly. Be sure you are tracking your calorie intake accurately. Buy a food scale, only use measuring cups for liquids, don't guesstimate anything you can measure/weigh accurately. Be consistent and…
  • I agree with this. Also if this is your first HM, you don't need a speed day, you need to work on your mileage. Your goal should be to finish it, not for a specific time, which is where the speed work comes into play. Just up your mileage safely and enjoy the race!
  • Go to a running store, get fitted for shoes properly, they'll be able to help you with inserts and anything else you could need. Also, if it does not feel like muscle soreness, go see your doctor. There might be an underlying problem where running is just bringing it to the surface sooner than it would have showed.
  • I mostly run with a running group and only do 1 run a week on my own. I get in my own head too much, especially when I started so I "couldn't" complete more than 3 miles without giving up. The group helped me get out my of my head and increase my distance comfortably. It's a relatively large group and at first I did my…
  • Welcome to MFP! You're actually not that far from me, I'm in the Utica area. I only started running last December so the idea of BQ is something I can't achieve in my wildest dreams so Congrats on that! That's quite an accomplishment.
  • If you just search Les Mills under cardiovascular you'll see the whole list of classes they offer then you should be all set.
  • There is no bad food, its just a matter of how you want to use your calorie allotment. If you want to try that, go for it and have some more filling, lower calorie foods the rest of the day. OP- 15% is a very low body fat for women, are you aiming for a bodybuilding competition or professional sports? Usually they are the…
  • Sorry just saw this. It was a lot of fun, 600m swim, 30k bike, 5k run, I completed it in just over 2 hours. It would have been under but I had 1 mistake in each transition but I think it went really well for my first time and I definitely plan to do more in the future :) Hope you enjoy your training!
  • You should go to a specialty running store and get fitted properly. Everyone has shoes that work for them but they may not work for you.
  • Thanks everyone! I noticed the trend in responses ;) I'll add the extra day of running, slowly increase my mileage and not add in a specific speed day. BTW during the peak weeks of my training for my previous races, I did reach the mid to high 20s for mileage but it hasn't been consistent. I'll also work on adding in tempo…
  • Thanks @cheshirecatastrophe I live in a rather hilly area so all of my runs incorporate hills right now. I've been slowing down up hill to keep my breathing and heart rate in a comfortable area, maybe I'll try to keep my pace consistent at least one day a week to make that more like speedwork instead? Thanks for your input!
  • This is very common, OP, if you cut out things you enjoy completely, you are more likely to overeat later when you 'allow them back' try using moderation, you'll be much happier in the long run. OP, only listen to the bolded part of this. The rest may work for some people but doesn't necessarily work for you. A lot of the…
  • I ran a 15k this past weekend, the Utica (NY) Boilermaker. It was hot, too crowded and kind of miserable. I expected to be faster but I guess everyone has off days. I want to redeem myself next year though!
  • 220lbs is pretty impressive for just starting out. If I may suggest, you should look into a lifting program involving free weights to target more muscle groups at one time. Many on this site would suggest StrongLifts 5x5, New Rules of Weight Lifting, Strong Curves and a few others. It's worth looking into if you are…
  • I'm a relatively new runner from NY only seriously started running in December. I'm training for my first sprint tri right now but after Aug 2 I'll be mainly running until October when I'll cool it and focus on lifting. Feel free to add me :)
  • I actually signed up for my first sprint Tri this year. My race is on August 2nd so I'm getting the hang of everything now! I heard www.beginnertriathlete.com/ is a great resource to check out for workouts and information on Tris. Also MFP has a Tri group that you should join to get more information from experiences…
  • Les Mills BODYPUMP™ - as GraemeMcC stated, its in the database under cardio. Search Les Mills and you should find the whole list of classes.
  • http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10177907/most-helpful-posts-getting-started-must-reads#latest These are a good set of posts to start with. WRT the forums, as long as you 1) search your topic first and confirm your question isn't asked 100 times a week, 2) give as much information as possible and 3)…
  • Thanks everyone! I don't feel broken anymore. I'll try out candy or gum on my next few runs and see if any of them help, if not I'll have some water bottle pride. Thanks again!
  • You should check out these groups http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/94-long-distance-runners http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/group/235-marathon-runners-past-present-future They have a lot of very experienced people who are usually very helpful. Good luck!
