  • I usually recommend flat-bottomed shoes for wide stance squatters, but it really depends on the individual. I pull in wrestling shoes but I've seen countless numbers of powerlifting competitors use them for squats. I, personally, wear Adidas Powerlift 2's to squat and perform Olympic lifts. Once I started wearing them I…
  • Physiologically, it could be high or low blood pressure. If your blood pressure is normal, look to diet. Could be blood sugar or hydration issue. Try drinking 4 - 6 ounces of 100% juice about 20-30 minutes prior to training, or a wheat-free starch (whole grain brown or wild rice, millet, oatmeal, sweet potato, etc) about…
  • Thank you. I had some issues with various injuries over the past few years and never really refocused on squats (my stupidity). I'm currently on a squat program that I designed and things are looking better than ever. I plan on doing my next full-power meet in March 2015 and I expect big things from myself on squats...…
  • It does when you're me.
  • Because of years of powerlifting and doing few mobility and flexibility movements, I became rather tight and had horrible hips, knees, and ankles. Instead of accepting it, I did something about it. Saying that a half squat is 'beautiful' doesn't cut it with me. In competition, hit depth or it's a red light. Period. Instead…
  • My stats and PRs: 36 years old, 5'11, 245-ish Squat - about 500 (testing next week) Bench - 470 raw, 495 with shirt Dead - 640 OHP - 290 strict I've been a competitive powerlifter for about 6 years and currently delving into some Olympic lifting. And yes, I'm drug-free - I only compete in tested events. __________________…
  • A polar bear. Not so sure about that one...
  • When: Oct 2014 Where: Lakeland, FL Federation: WABDL Class: Submasters 33-39 Weight: either 242 or 259 Goals: 525 bench w/ shirt; 650 deadlift raw; 1175 total push/pull I planned on doing a raw meet this summer but the date and venue changed so I will wait until October.
  • I'm glad you all enjoyed the videos. :) I use them for training purposes with my athletes.
  • Those weights look great! You're doing the right thing by sticking to the machines. Safety first!
  • Amazing!!! Those numbers are heavy for some of my male athletes! How long have you been competing?

  • For cardio, try these: Sprints HIIT Sled drags / pushes Olympic lifting (yes, really) Lift faster (not joking, some people are not very explosive and take too much time between sets) Farmers walks Plyometrics Jump rope High-box step ups Boxing Tire flips Whatever you choose to do for cardio, don't stop strength training.…
  • With those numbers you're no grunt. Oly lifts aren't overwhelming if you know the progression. Start with front squats (sit back, chin up, good shin angle) and overhead squats (start with broomstick then progress to more weight, shoulders back, push off heals) then the rest will come. My wife just started doing Olympic…
  • If you squat fairly narrow (just outside shoulder width) then a shoe with a slightly elevated heal is best. The elevated heal helps compensate for pelvic tilt. As stated above, I also use the Adidas Powerlift 2.0 for front and back squats and Olympic lifts. For wide squatters and for deadlifting, use flat sole shoes. I…
  • I usually lift WABDL and R.A.W. United. I love the sport because it's you vs you - no one else to blame if you screw up. I agree with the dieting part. I'm not a fan of cutting for a meet. The last meet I did (last month) I actually had to gain weight; that was harder than cutting for me! I coach Olympic weightlifting and…
  • Nice work! As a powerlifter myself, I think those are some very impressive numbers.
  • On my training playlist: Hatebreed Slipknot Chimaira (Year of the Snake is amazing) Dry Kill Logic Five Finger Death Punch Godsmack HellYeah Pantera Scar the Martyr (Flatline and Fracture is best) Mudvayne Static-X Rammstein Damageplan Throwdown Nothingface Coal Chamber I like my training and my music as heavy and intense…
  • I have a whey shake with breakfast every morning (unless I eat meat or a few eggs instead). In the morning your body is craving protein. Whey breaks down quickly and can easily be absorbed so it's the obvious choice for the mornings and post-training. As stated above, a whey shake is NOT a replacement for breakfast. It's…
  • I absolutely love Bob's Red Mill Gluten-free Muesli. Add some Greek yogurt or milk (unsweetened vanilla coconut or almond milk is amazing), raw honey, and a spoonful of chia seeds for an awesome and filling breakfast. Of course, I'll have 4 servings (1 full cup) along with either eggs or a protein shake. My goal is to…
  • There's one specific company (not naming names) around central FL that does wraps and encourages wrap parties. I see their ads on cars everywhere now. it really disgusts me. It's so sad to see people just wanting a quick fix. These wraps are equivalent to the 'magic weight loss pill' that has never and will never exist. So…
  • I have a tapered Inzer 10mm lever and an APT tapered single prong. I can't use a 4in belt because I don't exactly have much of a belly and it digs into my ribs (bruised a rib once doing squats). Some prefer one over the other but a recent article by Rippetoe covers belts and deadlifts:…
  • Lakeland (kind of close to Tampa...)
  • I read this today and sent it to some of my female clients and athletes: http://www.poliquingroup.com/ArticlesMultimedia/Articles/Article/1159/_Ten_Simple_Rules_For_Women_to_Get_the_MOST_Out_of.aspx Definitely worth the time to read!
  • Bands work great for squats. I use the ones from EliteFTS.
  • I use supra-maximal lifts in my training all the time. Reverse bands on bench and deadlifts, boards for bench, rack pulls, etc. That kind of training beats the crap out of me but the strength gains are worth it come meet time...
  • Good call! I could watch Super Troopers and Boondock Saints hundreds of times and they wouldn't get old...
  • I'm reviving this thread to see if there are any other Polk folks on these boards... I'm in Lakeland - teacher, strength coach, personal trainer, novice powerlifter...
  • I've been lifting for 9 years and competing for about 5, mostly push/pull meets with WABDL, etc. I've competed in the 242, 259, and 275 weight classes, most of the time lifting raw. I have a meet coming up in April (bench only, back is hurt so I can't pull deads) and I do plan on wearing my shirt for that one. I currently…
