  • I don't know exactly how you're feeling, but I'm here for you if you need it.
  • Take a look at this article: It's about McD's new oatmeal. http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/22/how-to-make-oatmeal-wrong/?partner=rss&emc=rss
  • GI issues while running are super common. I just ran a 1/2 marathon yesterday and had bad stomach cramping from mile 11 to the finish. I was seriously wondering if I'd have to finish the race with one sock. It got rough. You're less than a week away--try not to change your daily routine too much. I'd suggest eating more…
  • I don't know if you eat it already, but oatmeal has become my go-to breakfast food. Old-fashioned oats, some wheat germ, a tsp. of brown sugar, and some sugar-free pancake syrup on top. I don't have absolute proof, but I'm convinced that this has helped with the numbers going down.
  • Ooh, yum. My 4 year olds think that the energy chews are their "fruit snacks." I'm like, no boys, these are a LOT more expensive than your fruit snacks! I just did a 1/2 this morning and used Honey Stinger gels. I find them so much more easily digestible than GU gels, for some reason.
  • My brother is a 4 time Ironman competitor and HE doesn't even work out 8 hours a day!
  • Correct. How in the world does anyone walk at 5 mph? This exercise diary is messed up, for sure.
  • These are my favorite dinosaurs--Jakob Tyrannosaurus and Noah Triceratops. I want to be a good role model for them and show them how to make healthy choices.
  • That is an awesome story and made me LOL. My last lol came this evening after dinner when one of my boys grabbed me and gave me a big hug, then kissed me with both of his little hands on the sides of my face. Then my husband whispered something in his ear, and Noah came up to me again, hugged me, and kissed me, saying,…
  • I have always heard that if the cold/illness is above your shoulders (that is, hasn't settled into your chest) then light cardio exercise is fine. If you have a chest cold then it's best to wait a few days til you're feeling stronger. If you're tired, then play it by ear. Don't do too much at once and then knock yourself…
  • My brother has a friend who finished an Ironman marathon portion with one sock after what he'd eaten didn't agree with him. He has another Ironman friend who, and I quote, "stumbled and sharted" through the last 15 miles of the marathon portion. This guy Ryan had a longer time in the marathon than the 112-mile bike…
  • Well, I feel a lot better after commiserating with you guys. It's nice to know I wasn't alone this week! :o) And yes, today is a new day.
  • What other people are saying. If you do cardio too soon after eating, you're likely upsetting your stomach by jostling everything around. I wait at least an hour after eating to start any cardio exercise. Also, try to drink at least 8 oz. of water every half hour or so while exercising. You also might be doing too much and…
  • I have 4 year old twins. I gained 42 lbs. when I was pregnant and it took quite a while to get all the weight off. Granted, I was so busy with taking care of them and making sure they were healthy (they were 6 weeks early, a little scary for us!) that I didn't care about losing the weight right away. Now I weigh about 10…
  • We have a family membership at the Y. My husband and I figured it out that with the free babysitting included, we'd have to go twice a week and use the Child Watch (babysitting) service to make it worth our while. I go to the Y at least 6x a week and my husband goes at least 2x a week. Plus, with our Y membership, we can…
  • Yesterday's Ipod playlist (cardio day): -The Cave (Mumford and Sons) -Run this Town (Jay-Z) -Imma Be (Black Eyed Peas) -Sweet Child O'Mine (Guns N Roses) -Hollaback Girl (Gwen Stefani) -Paper Planes (MIA) -That's not my Name (The Ting Tings) -Smooth Criminal (Alien Ant Farm) -Weapon of Choice (Fatboy Slim) -Forever (Drake)…
  • 1/2 marathon gal here! I have a 1/2 on May 1st and am going to aim for a full in mid-September. I have found this (as in My Fitness Pal) tremendously helpful in being able to keep track of what I've eaten and when, and what works for me in re: to "fueling" myself prior to long runs or hard workouts. I think you'll find…
  • I'm in the "try to cut it out of your diet completely if you can" camp. Except that I call it pop, not soda :o) I used to drink at least 24 oz. of diet pop a day. I have eliminated it completely from Feb. 1st-May 1st due to training for a 1/2 marathon. At first I was scared I would miss the slight caffeine buzz but I…
  • Mmm...garbage plate. Are you talking the upstate NY kind or another kind?
  • You can borrow my 4 year old boys any time, then you might change your mind about wanting twins :o)
  • Women's multivitamin Calcium supplement--strong bones Flaxseed oil--healthier for you than fish oil Kelp--nutritional seaweed Ginseng--mental boost
  • I have 4 year old twins myself. When I got pregnant I carried the baby weight all in front--and holy moley, there is a lot of excess skin. I call it my handbag. It will always be with me. I actually weigh about 10 lbs. less than before I got pregnant, but the weight distribution has definitely changed. I know that no…
  • Betty Crocker has "healthified" versions of some of their most popular recipes, including one for Chocolate Chip Cookies. Here it is: http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/healthified-chocolate-chip-cookies/8a058d47-fc1d-4cca-83fa-a8ddc9a447be?sr=2&st=7#/?term=Healthified&pi=2&mr=20 Good luck! ~Jenna
  • QUINOA: One of my favorite ways is to mix it with mushrooms, onions, diced tomatoes, a few sundried tomatoes, all sauteed in a bit of olive oil. Then throw a bit of Parmesan cheese on top. FLAX: Grinding the seeds is the best way to release all of the nutrients. I've added it to cookie dough, muffin mix, pancake batter,…

  • Start slow. Like, really slow. Don't expect too much from yourself right away. It takes time for your body to get used to things. You'll get there. We joined the Y in January 2009. At that point I could not even run 1/2 mile on the treadmill at a super slow pace without gasping for breath and thinking I was going to die.…
  • Hey girl! Definitely eat/drink something BEFORE you work out--that's been covered. Definitely eat/drink something AFTER you work out--that's been covered. I'd advise to eat something w/carbs and electrolytes as soon as you are done (I usually wolf down a banana--sugar and potassium--in the locker room). Something with…
  • I've always found that exercising anywhere from 2-3 hours before my usual bedtime is not a good idea for me. It "wakes up" my system to the point where I can't relax enough to fall asleep. Is there any way you could switch your exercise time to earlier in the day?
  • Thanks! I've heard good things about both Polar and Garmin...and it was recommended to me that I definitely want to get one with the chest strap. Any ideas on what is a reasonable cost for either? I've been checking out ebay, but keep getting outbid
  • I'd advise to skip the class before the run. I'm doing something called embedded strength training for my 1/2 marathon training, where you run 1/2 your run, do a weightlifting circuit, then finish your run at the same pace as before. I do this every Thursday and it is ROUGH. My feet feel as though I have cinder blocks…
