Bad Run Stories

I read all of these success stories on here of people losing tons of weight and hitting new running PRs all the time and they are motivating, but I didn't see any entries about runs that went bad. Sometimes what you learn from these is just as motivating. I just wrote about my horrible run this past weekend ( http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/AggieCass09/view/worst-run-ever-96377 ) and would like to read about other's not-so-good races. I know not every race can beat your previous one but I'm still kind of bummed especially since I cant find another half marathon near by to redeem myself anytime soon (its too hot to run that far in Texas now).

Thanks!

  • I would tell you about one training run during a 95 degree, high humidity afternoon, but it involves a bad stomach, woods along the trail, giggling kids on their bikes, and me finishing the run with one sock...

sounds similar to mine minus the giggling kids and loss of a sock!

I had a run where I literally ran 6 houses down the street and took a nasty tumble stepping off the sidewalk to cross the street. I scrapped up my hands and shoulder. I went back home to assess the damage (I was fine), so I changed my shirt, wiped off the blood and went our for my run.

I had another run where I took a much worse tumble on the sidewalk 1 mile into a planned 20 miler.
  • Aww, come on! The Sizzling Summer Half in Arlington looks like fun :-). Friend me if you want another Texan running pal ;-)

ewwwww...lol you do what you gotta do!

Worst that's happened to me is getting a groin strain and having to walk home, then take a bunch of time off running. Just getting back into it now. Starting sloe with intervals.

Good to know I'm not the only one these things happen to!

Worst for me was a planned 10 mile training run that lasted ALMOST a quarter of a mile before something I ate decided it DID NOT like me anymore and required a very, very fast return home.

I've also had a couple of stops in gas stations, McDonald's and public restrooms - I generally make sure when I'm running that I know where the available pottys are! Stupid digestive tract!

Focusing on those good runs is what keeps me going! I try to forget those bad runs/races and learn from them and move on. We all have them!

I log each and every run at RunningAhead.com, each run has a title....like "easy, long, tempo, etc"...when it's a particularly bad run, I label it with a black color bar and call it WTF!

I really can't say that I have any bad run stories. Mostly just injury related due to overtraining.

Was I just starting out (before I knew not to run in cotton shirts) I complete my longest run ever at the time (probably 8-9 miles). I ran through a park in my 'hood towards the end and didn't understand why I was getting funny looks.

I returned home to find streaks of blood on my t-shirt from my chafed man-nips.

    Ok. My first 10k!

I hadn't ever run 10k before, so BAD START. I had also never done a running race before. In fact, I hadn't really run before, aside from a couple of very hurried weeks training from NOTHING.

Set off too fast. Couldn't get my music volume right so switched it off and ran with my headphones dangling irritatingly in front of me the entire way.

Twisted my ankle at the 2k mark (it was an offroad race and I was wearing road shoes). At about 6k the wind picked up, I ran out of ready energy and I was FREEZING the entire rest of the race.

I honestly thought I wouldn't make the last 2k. I was in hell. I couldn't breathe, everyone had over taken me, I was so cold and the thought of 2 more km made me want to cry.

I finally made it to the last km, straight stretch, and had nothing more to give. I couldn't add any speed, and when my children ran out onto the track to hold my hands for the last 100m, I waved them away. I was in too much pain and too exhausted. I felt like the most awful Mummy in the World. Then I spent the rest of the morning in the first aid tent getting my ankle strapped up.

    Hell.

I have had my share of bad runs; and I mean that literally. Nothing like ducking off the trail behind a bush and praying that no one else is going to pass by anytime soon.

I also had a horrible last half of a marathon last year. I hit the wall hard at mile 18 and every fiber of my body was telling me to quit for every step of the last eight. It was a pretty epic mental battle to finish that one.

It wasn't my run, but an acquaintance told me about her friend near Anchorage, who walked into her kitchen one day to find a runner standing there. He quickly introduced himself as one of the minor league (whatever they're called) baseball players and told her he had been running and a grizzly had come out of nowhere, did she mind if he waited in her house for a few minutes?
I would consider that a bad run.

Thanks for posting this. I just had my first run (5K) on Saturday. Despite the steady rain, wind and 50 degrees, I had a good run. But it's good to know that all will not be perfect all the time. I agree with the comment on your blog - despite all the adversity, you still finished. And that is a lot to be proud of.

My brother has a friend who finished an Ironman marathon portion with one sock after what he'd eaten didn't agree with him. He has another Ironman friend who, and I quote, "stumbled and sharted" through the last 15 miles of the marathon portion. This guy Ryan had a longer time in the marathon than the 112-mile bike portion.

Bottom line: There are good days and bad days. The important part is starting over after you've had the bad day.

I did the San Francisco Half a couple of years ago. The night before the race my friend talked me into trying this little restaurant in China Town...she convinced me that the carbs would be great for my run the next day. Need I say more?

I hit EVERY porta-potty, a Safeway and two bars along the way.

I had a bad run Saturday. I started the day with a 5k race where I PR'd (yippee!)....then went out for an 8 mile training run (I'm doing a marathon the end of June). About 3 or 4 miles into the 8 miler (which turned into a 7.32 miler) I got a side stitch - bad...and the freakin' thing wouldn't go away. Had to take constant walk breaks for the rest of the miles and ended up cutting the run short.

Thanks for all of the bad stories... I laughed, I cryed -- ok most of the time I laughed.
I am thankful I have never had a "trot" issue - although I had to have my colon surgically removed because it did not work ... so I dont think that will ever be an issue for me.

I have 2 bad runs recently - both in my blog. A 10K where it literally hailed on me, we got lost on the course because they took it down, and even though we finished we had no official time! :)

Today was pretty bad though ... I forgot my inhaler and ran anyways... guess what ... that asthma is NOT in my head. I got into some pretty bad trouble had to bag it at mile 3 and very slowly walk and wheeze the last mile!
