You said you have several months. I honestly don't see why this isn't plenty of time. Try to do some research on nutrition and do your best to get in regular exercise. 1-2lbs of weight loss per week is realistic.

The first time I started cutting I was sure there was no change. Even after 3 months and 20lbs lost. The next time I started a serious diet I took before and after pictures and the results became apparent to me. See if you can't find some old pictures of you and compare them to your current self :).
