  • As I understand it, squats (and deadlifts) are the main compound lifts and require the most energy to complete. Each workout starts with one of these so that you aren't tired when doing them. The other exercises alternate so that you have more than enough rest time between sets.
  • Thanks for the reply. I'd never had anything like that happen before either. I've been tired before during a workout but never like that. Those are good questions though. It was a busy weekend so I definitely didn't sleep as much as I could have. I've been eating about 1900-2100 calories a day which is basically…

  • Following for the advice.
  • The workouts have taken me about an hour. That includes rests and warm up sets. Hmmm, I'm not sure why you're feeling the moves in your back. I agree that it's hard to figure out when to add weight. I never know if I'm pushing myself hard enough. I find deadlifts very awkward, but I'm doing them with dumbbells. I do think…
  • 1. It's four times for each workout. So working out three times a week, it'll only be about two and a half weeks. 2. It works your obliques. I usually feel it on one side but not the other. I try to lift my upper body pretty high in order to really feel it.
  • I agree. From what I've read, when done correctly, the deadlift won't affect your back at all. When I'm feeling good, I only feel it in my legs and glutes.
  • I do my intervals in between lifting days. My legs just can't handle it after lifting and I don't usually have the time. Since I don't have an Olympic bar I've been using dumbbells to do deadlifts. I don't do them from the box since the range of motion is already greater than lifting with the barbell. At least that's the…
  • I'm just starting stage two. My gym also doesn't have an Olympic bar so I've been doing dumbbell dead lifts. I'm sure I'm not lifting as much as I could if I had a barbell but it seems okay.

  • thanks for sharing! I'm going to try some of these.
  • bump for starting stage 2 next week
  • Saved to read again.
  • I love this website...www.fitbolt.com. Every 30 minutes or so it gives you a stretch or an exercise to do. I have an office so I can close the door to do the more ridiculous looking ones.
  • In for answers since I have the same question.
  • When I decided to start heavy lifting I knew nothing at all. I read the book New Rules of Lifting for Women cover to cover and learned a lot. I've been following the program in the book for about two months and am really enjoying it.
  • I've been using a dumbbell for squats too. A trainer at the gym showed me how to use one heavy dumbbell held in both hands with arms straight down. I definitely feel it in my legs, but I won't be able to progress very far, meaning adding heavier and heavier weight, doing it this way.
  • I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It feels like the extra reps are helping. My abs were killing me this weekend after my workout on Friday. I'm still just not sure I'm actually seeing any strength benefits or changes in my body. I measured myself on Saturday and there's no change from when I started. It's possible…
  • I'm in the same boat. I'm nearing the end of stage 1 and while I think I've made some strength gains, it's hard to tell whether I'm really getting stronger or if I just started with weights that were too low. I'm also pretty shaky at the end of each workout and sometimes I'm sore for a day or two afterwards so I think I'm…
  • I've really enjoyed the peanut butter snack bar that's mentioned in the book. I make them on the weekend and then have them as a snack all week.
  • Hi! I'm also in stage 1 and am no expert, but I usually try to work out every other day even if I'm sore. Usually once I start moving the soreness goes away. Other times it doesn't. Last week my shoulders were so sore that I had to lower the weights I was using for the shoulder presses, but I still got through it. It all…
  • Thanks for the responses. I'm going to go back to an incline and see if I can do them with elbows in!
  • Hi everyone. I'm Kim, 33, from NYC. I've been lurking on these boards for awhile as I got started and finally decided to go ahead an introduce myself. I'm new to weightlifting but decided I wanted to start when I couldn't open a jar by myself. I really want to be stronger. I read the book and am on my fourth week of stage…
