I am an absolute shoe *kitten*. I have 9 different pairs that I rotate through. I wear Altra's, Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, New Balance and Salomons. I know people feel that some shoes protect them from injury more than other shoes, however I believe running form has more to do with injury than your running shoes. Don't get too…

I wear a Nathan Streak vest as it provides a good deal of reflective material front and rear. Additionally I use a small blinking led or two from Inova called Nite Ize microlight. As for a lamp, I wear a Wal Mart purchased Energizer 130 lumen headlamp. I have noticed if there are many bugs then wearing it on your head can…

I saw an article ranking the various run apps. I believe Runkeeper and Strava were at the top and very comparable to each other. I have used both but prefer Runkeeper. This may be because I started with it and just feel more comfortable with it. My only issue is some phones are not very accurate as GPS devices.

I ran the Runner's Flat 50K. Consisted of two loops with a water crossing by canoe. I felt really strong and was easing my way up to the front and had the master's division clinched and felt strongly that I could have gotten into 3rd overall if not 2nd. Then I came up to the canoe crossing a third time! I don't know how I…

to the OP: as you can see, asking for advice is a bit dangerous on an open forum such as this. My observation is that there are many ways to get where you want to go, so don't get hung up on being on the "right" road. Determine what your goal is and find a plan that you are comfortable with to get you there. I always…

Forgot to post. Ventura Marathon in California. Didn't reach my primary goal of under 3 hours but still PR'd with a 3:03:32! I will keep chipping away at it.

I have been experimenting with many different foods lately while running and just before running in order to see how my stomach handles it. I have also been running with 40 oz of water on all my runs but only because I am training for an ultra and will be carrying them during the race. Before this, I would not carry or eat…

it hasn't been said yet so I will say it. Go to bed earlier. If I am staying up for the evening news, I have difficulty getting out of bed for a workout.

Running and eating. I do both to excess!!

I don't know of videos but I am sure a google search would produce something. As for me, I just add fartleks to the occasional easy run. To do this, I pick out two spots (typically intersections) and start my fartlek at one intersection and run to the next. When I want it more structured, I will run intervals on the track.

training for my first marathon....My longest run was 21miles or 3ish hours.

28.6 hours of running in August for a total of 206.5 miles. Approximately 60 miles of that was trail running.

i would use calisthenics.

I use a neck gaiter and let it ice over. It does slow my pace down a bit as it blocks air flow. When it is really bad, I will push my chin out to create some space between my mouth and my gaiter. This has worked well for me, even on long runs.

I think the Forerunner 10 by Garmin would provide what you are looking for at an affordable price. I have never used one, but many friends of mine have and it serves them well. I use a Suunto Ambit2 and it is great but much more expensive with many more features than what you are asking for

to add on to @cheshirecatastrophe 's post. I have also found that running in the city is a bit more difficult. The roads have deicing agent put on it and you get a slushy top with rough, ankle twisting ice beneath it. I have moved my winter runs to the gravel roads in the country. The gravel roads are plowed but not…

LOL this is so true

I have never lost any toe nails but I have bruised them badly. I have been running for several years now including several marathons and one 50K. The only damage to my toe nails has been from kicking up rocks.

safety is a relative thing, but statistically speaking you are in more danger of being attacked by a dog then a rapist. We tend to view attacks by people as particularly devastating due to the personal nature of it. If it makes you feel better to run in a group or to carry some form of protection, do so. As always your…
