  • I would say that it is hard. I have a big appetite (hence why I got in a position to where I needed to lose weight in the first place) and a sedentary job, so I need exercise to plug that gap otherwise my goal weight is unsustainable. The critical thing is that it has to be a form of exercise that you enjoy, otherwise it's…
  • I have experience with both those things, and completely get when you say that an anxiety attack makes you unmotivated to do a thing. It causes such a shrinking away. Here's what worked for me. When I started running decent distances, I found that daily debilitating anxiety lessened to the point where it eventually went…
  • I find it helpful to think of this - a 2l bottle of water weighs 4.4lbs, which is your weight "gain". But if I simply drank a litre of water in half an hour then stood on the scales, they would have gone up by over 2 lbs in half an hour. But of course that wouldn't mean I'd laid down 2lbs of fat in an hour. I try to…
  • Definitely worrying too much! I have been on maintenance for 18 months and it is arguably harder than the actual weight loss because you don't have the positive reinforcement of seeing the numbers going down on the scale which keeps you motivated. However to put on 4 lbs in such a short time would have required you to…
  • These are very wise words that sum it up perfectly!
  • You are among friends! From the second we are weaned, big corporates and the media are out to destabilise our natural harmonious relationship with food. Look at the multi-million dollar food industry, and the equally huge & profitable slimming industry, not to mention all the magazines/ papers selling us pictures to…
  • You've got quite a long journey ahead of you, and my guess is that you want this to be forever, i.e. not put all the weight back on when you reach your goal weight and stop dieting. Therefore I would recommend that you hover about your daily calorie allowance after adding back your exercise calories. Some days you'll eat a…
  • That is pretty intensive exercise, and sometimes your body needs a recovery day. I have recently completed my training for a marathon, and recovery periods are built into that schedule of high mileage. Without being a medic, I would say that's your body saying it needs a recovery day. I occassionally have had those when…
  • I have just had scrambed egg whites for the first time, and all I did was break the eggs into a bowl and scoop out the yolks with a tablespoon. It took about 2 seconds. I used to have an egg separator, but the kids have hidden it! Whilst I can see that buying egg whites might be seen as "convenient", it hardly saves you…
  • I'm a pear too - although I have lost weight in my legs, and this is most dramatically visible in my before & after pictures (not posted by the way), most of my weight loss has been from my top half, in terms of inches & fat loss. I still carry fat and wobbly bits in my bum & thighs, but there isn't an ounce left above my…
  • I do a lot of running now, and have entered my first marathon, which is in a fortnight. The training mileage has been pretty full on (I did virtually no exercise before March of this year) and yes, I have found I wake up v. early in the morning, absolutely buzzing. I would say my whole body clock has shifted, although…
  • Have a look at this article - I find that low fat yoghourt works for me, but it depends on your personal taste. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-13891620 When I was on 1200 calories a day allowance, I found it virtually impossible to stay within that limit - I love my food! I found the only way to succeed was to build…
  • With me it started with dog walking - if you don't have a dog then shelters are often looking for volunteers. I gradually built up the distances and speed, and then progressed to jogging and I'm now obsessed with running every day! I was totally rubbish at sports at school, and a couch potato before March of this year, so…
  • I used to think every other day, but now I can run most days (say 5 days a week) but it's worth pointing out that I don't run fast, more of a fast jog. Therefore it's more about endurance & stamina than pushing your muscles to sprint as fast as possible. I think the latter needs rest days, because it's more the equivalent…
  • I think it also depends on your personality and your relationship with food. The hardest thing I find about diets is that you still need to eat (obviously!!) but eat a restricted amount. Therein lies my problem - as soon as food is restricted, I find myself thinking about it more and wanting to eat more. I guess it's a…
  • Missing periods/ no periods is a side effect of anorexia. Therefore it follows that if you are restricting your food intake/ working out a lot more there will be a knock on hormonal effect which may result in late periods/ cycle adjustment. If you go an see the doctor, they'll probably just tell you that. Unfortunately,…
  • That is so true, it's amazing!!
  • I had 2 slices of wholemeal toast before doing a pre-breakfast run. The run was followed by a bowl of porridge made with 1/3 skimmed milk/ 2/3 water - to this I added some acacia honey, fresh raspberries and fresh blueberries. I also had a red delicious apple and some freshly brewed coffee. I think that's a fairly healthy,…
  • That makes total sense, and I feel that way too even though I've only lost 26 pounds . I have a hypnosis CD by Glenn Harrold and he makes the point that for weight loss to be successful, it has to be slow, because it takes the mind a while to accept your new body image. He advises you to give yourself time and space to…
  • I'm not a natural early riser, but this is definitely working for me (I'm getting up before 6 for a run every day now). 1) Absolutely definitely positively GO TO BED EARLY. Ideally every night, so your body clock starts to shift. and 2) If I'm getting up early for a run, I always have a piece of wholemeal toast first with…
  • This is a very common problem, and I suffer from it big time, particularly if I am tired or stressed. Agree about stocking up on fruit & veg (stuff you like, and I find crunchy is more satisfying for this urge). I also have lots of sugar free gum - fruity flavours work with me and help with the urges/ pass the time while…
  • Wow, that's an interesting article! If it's hot or I've been running a long distance, then I certainly drink my 8 glasses as day plus more. But if it's cold, or I'm sedentary, I don't get near - if I drank any more water, I'd never be off the toilet. As fruit plays a key role in my diet, this gives me comfort that I'm…
  • Yes, everything in moderation applies to water as well as food. I am always slightly surprised how many people recommend water as their top tip for losing weight. Whilst it is true that choosing water as your drink of choice will help in your quest for a healthy diet, drinking too much fluid is dangerous. See the following…
  • Congratulations too! I remember when I lost my first 5 pounds, I was euphoric. Onward and downwards!
  • I remember when you posted a picture of your new jeans a few weeks ago, and I was blown away even then. Congratulations on your success; you are an inspiration to everyone who has a long journey to go. You look great, and fit in every sense of the word. Well done you!!! P.S. Thanks for sharing, I know it isn't easy.
  • Me too - while breastfeeding, I didn't lose any weight, even if I had a horrible stomach bug and didn't eat for a few days. I just assumed that my extra weight was just "meant to be", as my mother gained weight in her 30s and never lost it again. It doesn't help when you read "breastfeeding burns xxx calories", because the…
  • OMG that's amazing!!! Well done you!
  • I am same and practically have to sit on plastic bags and never be far away from a toilet. I don't dare weigh myself just before or during, but look forward to the "release" when it's over. Shame they can't be once a year instead of once a month, but I guess that would make it difficult to have children!
