I would recommend reading the book, and look at the scientific evidence. For example the widely quoted "starvation mode" has more scientific evidence against it than for (for example: "Resting energy expenditure in short-term starvation is increased as a result of an increase in serum norepinephrine. C Zauner et al,…

"it's not rocket science, just eat less and exercise more" - maybe not from experts, but I see this often enough, and it makes my blood boil! My usual response is: "great idea, oh and by the way, if you want to be a billionaire here's a tip for you - it's not rocket science, just reduce your costs and increase revenue's -…

Yes I agree - I expect a big slow down soon... (Otherwise that would definitely be worrying!)

First shock measurement was on old scales but that was confirmed when I got the new ones which have since been used exclusively and in the same place. Though I have measured at different times of the day..

Many thanks for the reply Nikki! Yes I expect there will be some variation (especially as I am going to a family event today) but hopefully can keep it moving in the right direction. Don't forget I am eating calories back though - so I ate 3700 calls after a 80 mile ride where I burnt around 4000 cals (though I think any…

Yes that is what I am doing - I have emailed Argus support to confirm but it seems about right so far.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Just looking into the app a little more - when you tap the calories for the day it breaks it into Basal Cal and Steps Cal which helps a bit - I think. However - As I understand it, MFP adds 20% to the basal cal automatically for sedentary level. So ideally anything above that should be…

I use a fuel band for cycling and it records it fine - i was quite surprised. But I did 63 miles on a road bike on Sunday and it recorded about 9000 points. Maybe it depends on how firm the ride is? On something with suspension I guess it may not record any movement. Have you got the latest firmware update from Nike on the…

There is a lot of discussion on this on these forums! My take on it is that if you originally work out your calorie allowance in MFP using 'sedentary' activity then you add exercise burn as you do it and you can eat them back. So yes if your target is 1200 and you exercise 600 you can eat 1800. Just be careful that you 1)…

Much appreciated Matt! Cheers Ian

Hi Matt, I think there is a lot of confusion about what is meant by 'eating calories back'. There seems to be two approaches: 1) base you target daily calories to include the exercise you do (and not log it on MFP) - in which case you don't 'eat it back' because you have already included the extra amount in your daily…

it's not the size of the wave - it's the motion of the ocean!

You have to be careful - I use a wahoo hear rate monitor that connects to my iPhone - its great when walking or out on my bike but on my cross trainer it is way out (recording a tiny amount for 30 mins) This is because all the apps I have tried with it measure distance using the gps and use that in the calculations I…

It just means 'bump' the post back up to the top of the recent post lists by replying to a topic. It's a way of getting people to look at the topic again if it has gone a bit quiet. Might also be used for people to keep track of it because they can see it their "My topics" list if they have responded. Cheers Ian

For me it's about eating the right type of food, drinking lots of water, and exercise. For example if I eat sweet/sugary food it makes me want more after the initial hit, but having high fibre & healthy food and drinking cold water from a flask when I feel hungry I have lost over 40lbs in 4 months. I think this is related…

Kent. I think there are probably quite a few brits here - the database certainly reflects a huge amount of UK products - one of the reasons I chose MFP over others.

Yes that makes sense - hadn't actually done that maths! I think I will target exercising every day - beginner when I have less energy and intermediate at weekends or when I'm feeling a bit more up for it. Many thanks everyone - can't believe the speed and helpfulness of this forum - excellent!

I was recently at the Porsche Driver experience centre in Silverstone, uk. They have a driver performance centre where we had a talk on fitness and the use of the equipment they have there. Ths is used by Formula 1 drivers such as Mark Webber. One of the points they made was about the importance of hydration for fitness…
