  • You could all learn a thing or two from the people in this clip. Clearly they take fitness more seriously than any one on here. http://youtu.be/lraDNDuFNj8
  • Just googled it and found these two helpful links for the uninitiated. http://www.muscleandstrength.com/articles/i-spike-how-spike-diet-help-you-lose-weight-forever.html https://www.facebook.com/spikediet
  • I agree with everything that @chadya07 said about attitude. I have also found that it is a LOT easier this time as I am also doing a few things that help me to be more successful. 1. Find an activity you love, your "exercise" should be based primarily around things you like to do as an incentive to doing them. For me this…
  • Turning 40 was part of my inspiration to start this journey a few months ago. Open to any friend requests. Mutual support is part of the benefit of this great site.
  • This post is great for people getting started. It answers questions like this one as well as a few others. :) http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets
  • I started out with about 67lbs. to lose. It has taken me about 4.5 months to drop the first 30.
  • Here is a great post about setting your Calorie and Macro targets: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/819055-setting-your-calorie-and-macro-targets Most adult men need a minimum of 1g of protein/lb of lean body mass (LBM). LBM is calculated as Your Weight * (1-%body fat). As far as fat goes the typical calculation for…
  • Especially if those men are wearing police uniforms. :)
  • I just started on MFP a little over 4 months ago. Welcome to the struggle.
  • I used to get those too so when I started working on trail running I asked some of my running friends what they recommend. They all pointed me towards a company called altra. http://www.altrarunning.com They produce a line of shoes specifically designed to let your foot operate in its natural form but with the protection…
  • Quinoa is great for both and can be substituted for rice in a LOT of recipes. It is also really easy to make. Spinach also has some protein and fiber. Most foods however are really good at one or the other and not both.
  • I have used HIIT to help me increase my running distance. It is much more intensive than straight continuously paced cardio. I haven't read the studies myself but some of the PharmD grad students I work with mentioned a couple of studies that show that even relatively short training periods of HIIT is extremely effective…
  • I am in! The longer times are all hiking, the short time was a walk/jog. 9/1 - 135 minutes 9/2 - 98 min 9/3 - 19 min 9/4 - 138 min 390 minutes down, 1,050 minutes left to go.
  • I agree with @findingmarina. We each have a finite amount of will power. So when we want to make changes it is better to make smaller changes that become habits rather than make big changes that use up our will power before we are done with the morning. For example, Let's say you decide you want to cut out your 6 pack a…
  • Great post! I recently started fitting into my size 36 pants again, from a size 40. It sure feels great to be on that downward trend instead of going the other way.
  • You are right on with that quote. So often we get focused on an end goal, like our goal weight, and then don't really plan for what happens beyond. Life will go on even once I reach my goal weight it will be far from being the end of my fitness journey.
  • Welcome back! It sounds like you have a great plan in place. Low carb is a great way to go for someone who has insulin problems or a sensitivity to sugar. Just remember that low carb does not mean no vegetables but really it means mostly vegetables, nuts, and fruits.
  • For me it was a combination of things. How I looked in pictures, recurring episodes of gout, turning 40, and just feeling awful all the time.
  • HA!! That is hilarious! For us guys it is Hawaiian shirts and stretchy pants/shorts.
  • Feel free to add me as well. I have been working on this for a few months now and still have plenty to go.
  • There are some great bodyweight exercise routines you can find online that often include the use of dumbbells as a supplement. Here is a link to a beginner bodyweight circuit on nerdfitness.com: http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2009/12/09/beginner-body-weight-workout-burn-fat-build-muscle/ Below is a link to the story of a…
  • I love to eat veggies in my breakfast eggs such as spinach and zucchini. I also add a couple of cups of kale to my fruit shake in the morning though I have a great blender (ninja) otherwise I would have to chew my shake. Other than that I would say you try new vegetables you haven't had before and decide which ones you…
  • I have found the free resources at this site to be really helpful: http://www.nerdfitness.com/resources/#resources-free The guy who runs the site has some great articles on exercise as well as goal setting and habit forming/breaking in general. I have an old shoulder injury myself and found the beginner bodyweight workout…
