  • I'm Liz and started low carb a week ago. I was already keeping my carbs low-ish (under 100 grams usually) so I haven't had any keto flu (yay). I lost 35 pounds last year in the first 6 months by counting calories. Then I started being always hungry. I'd try to eat lower calorie food to maintain my calorie deficit which led…
  • I think being healthy is the best way to enjoy life. I've enjoyed good health in spite of being overweight but now that I'm in my 60s the weight is taking a toll. Joint issues, lack of stamina, not being able to move like I want, not being able to do the things I want to do. I know that losing the weight will make a lot of…
  • Maybe you should see a doctor about the shoulder. If you have soft tissue damage you could make it worse by lifting weights. Once you know the cause of the pain you can determine what kind of exercise will help.
  • Zinc will boost your immune system. I've found that if I don't rest when I first get sick then it takes longer to get over it. Good luck!
  • I log mine under Water Jogging. Although the calorie counts seem a bit high.
  • I think you're talking about the neck, heart and liver. I give them to my dog (not a fan of organ meats). Some people use the heart and liver to make giblet gravy. I say give the dog a treat.
  • It was interesting to go back and look at this. First month 10# Second Month 7# Third month 4# Fourth month 0# The scale just bounced up and down 2 pounds all month. Current month - I've started losing again but it's very slow. Probably due to a week of moving into a new house (a lot of eating out) and a 2 week vacation…
  • I've only lost 20 pounds so no pics yet. But I had a really great surprise with my last A1C. Last fall it was 6.2 which indicates that I'm a well-controlled Type II. I figured I'd wait until I lose a little more weight before I had it tested again but I'm scheduled for a knee replacement next week and had to have blood…
  • Go see a Ortho doc about the knee. 3 years ago I thought I'd torn my MCL when I twisted it walking down stairs. When it didn't heal, I went to PT for a month but it only helped a tiny bit. When the knee just kept getting worse I went to an Ortho. Turns out it was arthritis. I was surprised to discover that arthritis can…
  • I think the biggest changes are mental. If I have a treat or go over my calorie goal I don't give up for the rest of the day or week. It's just a bump in the road, not a head on collision. Also making this a lifestyle rather than a diet has helped. If I want a food that I can't afford calorie wise, it's easier to not…
  • This is so important! Diet and exercise can manage or reverse Type 2 Diabetes. I've lost 25 pounds since the first of the year and my fasting glucose has dropped from an average of 170 to an average of 110. Blood pressure is down a bit too. To explain: By "Reverse" I mean that your glucose has been normal long enough that…

  • I've lost 25 pounds in the past 4 months. Starting weight was 275. My fasting glucose has dropped about 50 points. So, yes, it works! I've been type 2 for about 10 years and have controlled it with diet. At my last check up my A1C was 6.2 (before the weight loss). I don't take any meds and I'm actually looking forward to…
  • My *kitten* hates them too and I'm scheduled for a knee replacement in May so I know I'm looking forward to a lot of biking. Love the idea of padded bike shorts. Found some padded bike underwear that I think will work. The padded shorts kinda make you look like you have camel-toe, so the underwear with shorts over them…
  • I know how you feel. Intellectually I KNOW that body weight fluctuates - I just don't want to SEE it on the scale. Yesterday I was 45 calories under my goal and my weight is up 2.5 pounds today...LOL. Actually that is one of the reasons I weigh every day. If I only weighed once a week and it happened to be on a heavy day…
  • Why do you not want to increase your fat intake to make up the calories? I'm type 2 diabetic and I basically try to keep my carbs under 80-100, protein at least 100 and the rest is fat.
  • I have severe arthritis in my right knee (bone on bone). I exercise in the pool by jogging (HIIT) and doing upper and lower body exercises using the water as resistance. I'm having a total knee replacement in May and looking forward to starting heavy lifting after recovery. Have you seen an ortho doc? Possibly cortizone…
  • I usually drink about 100 oz of water a day. More in the summer. When I lived in the desert I drank around 150 oz a day. I think you have to drink a LOT of water before it's a problem. How much are you drinking? And are you drinking because you are thirsty? Extreme thirst is one symptom of diabetes.
  • After surgery you'll probably have some rehabilitation therapy. Along with that you can do upper body weights. Any weight bearing exercise after surgery will have to be approved by your doctor or physical therapist. I'm scheduled for a total knee replacement in May so for now most of my exercise is done int he pool. Water…
  • Your weight will fluctuate daily. I weigh every day and my weight will vary by a couple of pounds some days. Also some weeks I won't lose anything and some weeks I'll lose more than my calories would indicate I should have lost. If you track your weight over time you'll have a better idea of whether you're losing or…
  • I would recommend the book "Eat to Live: An End to Diabetes" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. The eating plan basically consists of: 1 pound of raw vegetables, 1 pound of cooked green vegetables, 1 serving of whole grain, 1/2 to 1 cup of beans and 3-5 fruits each day. Also a small amount of lean protein 2 times a week. I was able to…
  • I've got another 80-90 pounds to lose. Looking at the past 2 weeks, I average 2000 calories a day with a little over 600 calories burned with exercise for a Net Cal of about 1450. I'm losing about 2 pounds a week. I try to keep my protein around 100 g and I watch my carbs because I'm diabetic. My workout consists of…
  • I would suggest you read the book "Eat to Live. An End to Diabetes" by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. The diet is vegetarian. He allows a small amount of meat each week but it's optional. I'm Type II diabetic and I lowered my fasting blood sugar by 40 points with it.
  • I don't have any real advice for you as to the weight but I've read that a woman's body will normally hold on to some extra weight for a year after giving birth. The theory is to have enough energy to produce breast milk. Not really sure if this is anecdotal or scientific. I know it sucks to have an extra 20 pounds but I…
  • I think it's easy to be obsessive about it. Also it feels like it's taking so long and we all want it off NOW. I found myself feeling like it was going so slow and my weight was bouncing up and down the same 2 pounds (I weigh every morning). This morning I looked at my calorie intake and exercise since the first of the…
  • I use Knorr's Alfredo Sauce Mix. It's about 80 calories for a quarter cup. I usually leave out the butter to save even more calories. Tonight I'm trying it with almond milk. I think traditional alfredo sauce is about 140 calories for a quarter cup.
  • I use stevia for sweetening beverages. It's from the stevia plant and NOT an artificial sweetner. I also use Xylitol for baking.
  • I was finally able to quit cigarettes with an e-cig almost 4 years ago. Best thing I've ever done for myself. Currently I'm cutting down the nicotine so eventually I'll vape a non-nicotine solution. No more cough, no more cig odor, no more upper respiratory infections - plus it's WAY cheaper than cigs!
  • It's my understanding that you can only deduct the fiber grams that are in the food. For example if you eat a veggie that has 10 grams of carbs with 2 of those grams being fiber, you would deduct the 2 grams of fiber because your body doesn't use them as fuel. Adding fiber to a food won't negate the carbs that are in the…
  • Beans. Tofu. If she isn't vegan she can get protein from cheeses, eggs and whey protein drinks. If she's vegan she could try a non-whey protein mix like soy.
