@MobyCarp I once heard the explanation that wrist-based HRMs can accidentally lock onto the cadence (or, more accurately, the frequency with with you swing your arms). Especially if the strap is loose enough that they can move around a bit with each arm swing. I'm not sure why that would happen with a chest strap though.…

If you do "bouldering", you aren't even all that high. Depends on the gym, but most I know have walls that are only 3-4m high. So you are standing maybe 1-2m above the ground, which is usually padded, so you can jump down. Or one place I know has a longer wall, but it's at a ~45-degree angle with the ground going up under…

I agree, it's different for different shoes. In my experience it's not only dependent on the brand, but on the specific model. I had a pair of Saucony Kinvara. After ~350km, my left knee started to complain after each run in them. With the Saucony Zealot I can run 700km without problems. My current pair of Zealots is at…

If you would like to walk but can't do it outside: Have you tried the "Leslie Sansone's Walk at Home" videos on YouTube? (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njeZ29umqVE&app=desktop ). Disclaimer: I haven't tried them myself (fortunately nothing prevents me from running outside). But I read a lot of people recommending…

There are a couple that aren't bulky. I think the misfit is rather slim. And you can also wear it as a necklace. For fitbit I know people who bought extension bracelets and wear them around the ankle instead of the wrist.

I started climbing (bouldering, indoors) about a year ago. Sadly, I'm not very good, but I can repeat what other people tell me ;-) What most people told me is that you get the right muscles for climbing by climbing more. Seems kind of obvious, but in my case the climbing gym is far enough away that I need a car, and the…

@Elise4270 That doesn't sound impossible. After all, zombie ants already exist.

Didn't do my long run today. I woke up feeling like I had a slug in my throat. Or like I was a slug myself? Definitely sluggishness involved. First thing I did after breakfast was burn some cookies (nope, not bake, burn). Brightest thought of the week: "I should close the kitchen door so that the smoke doesn't get in the…

Spoiler tags are the word "spoiler" in square brackets to start, then your images, then "/spoiler" in square brackets to finish. So this: [ spoiler][ img]https://content.active.com/Assets/Active.com+Content+Site+Digital+Assets/Running/580/meme-14.gif[/img]
turns into this if you remove the spaces after the "["s…

Today tried the third (and last) new pair of shoes: Hoka Hupana 2 . I'm not sure what to make of them yet. They fit well, but after a couple of kilometres I started getting the impression that they were encouraging me to over-pronate. Something in the way the sole is rounded towards the inside.... Will have to watch it…

I also carry bugs outside. Some other creatures appreciate it less than bugs: This summer we had a student staying with us for two month at work, who had never seen geckos before, but found them really cool. When one wandered inside, she wanted to help it by carrying it outside - and ended up holding its twitching tail,…

Yes, making sure you are comfortable on the way there will for sure help! :+1: When I started running, I didn't like it very much at first; (and it was in February, so cold and dark was a given too, very tempting to stay inside). The secret for me to make sure I did it was to do it right away after getting home from work,…

I've never run on an indoor track (and am pretty sure that none even exists anywhere nearby), so I won't have to try. But I was just thinking that an alternative would be candies like jelly beans. You take the right amount with you, and eat one for each lap. Counting and carb fueling in one! @eleanorhawkins…

What I found interesting when reading this thread is that many people advocate letting other people know that noticed them. I attended a self-defence evening many years ago, but I seem to remember that the instructor had the opposite advice, stating that looking around at each small sound makes you look insecure and…

Me too. Not pink or orange!

I have new running shoes! I already mentioned before, I have three pairs I will retire soon, so I ordered three new pairs, and they arrived yesterday. So prepare yourselves for lots of shoes pictures this week :D The first ones I tested are Merrell Bare Access Flex Knit. I tried them out tonight. They are on the minimalist…

I'm 8 pages late to the party again ^^ I'll catch up tomorrow, I just wanted to drop by and leave my goal before we hit double-digit page numbers. I'll try for 150km again. The last four months all fell short at around 130km, but I'm not giving up yet!

Finished November with 132.3 km. Which is not the 150km goal I had set. But I know exactly which runs are missing (in that week from 12th November where I spent 14h per day at work >:) and only went for one super short run). December should be better! And hopefully less rainy too  Nothing wrong with running in the…

Congratulations on completing the 25 min run! It's great to read your progress, you"re really doing well

Ha ha, that would have been perfect  No, it's one of those.

I only saw this now... If you could order single gloves, that would be pretty cool! I lost a single running glove once (stuffed them into my pocket after getting warmed up, never noticed when one of them fell out). I bought a pair of the same model again, and am keeping the right one as a "spare". Of course, most likely…

Do you have a diagnosis why you fall so frequently? Medical problems, some medication, improper footwear, poor balance, bad eyesight, foot problems, ankle instability, ...? Hard to give advice without knowing what is causing you to fall. Of course everyone falls now and then. I have a nice new scar on my knee since last…

@polskagirl01 I don't know who "wooed" your post, but I just added an "inspiring". Because I read it this morning during breakfast and decided I should take the bike to work. My first bike ride in November! Okay, it was also one of the first mornings in November without snow or rain, but without reading your post I might…

@MegaMooseEsq I think I shared this picture before (here or in the FB group), but after reading your list I just have to post it again: Also, I had to grin because I have never heard the term "butt-coat" before, and now I'm imagining some kind of wind-tight cape that you tie around your waist

It does sound like a pretty awesome destination race! My bank account isn't really up to that at the moment, but it will go on my "things to do after I win the lottery"-list :D The one thing my bank account will have to put up with, however, are new running shoes. Thanks everyone who tried the funny drop test! Even if it…

Has anybody ever heard of the "drop test" to see if running shoes should be replaced? I just read this on the polar blog ( https://www.polar.com/blog/when-to-replace-running-shoes-toss-your-trainers/ ). I just tried, and the three pairs I own that have 500+km (300+mi) indeed all (seem to?) rock around longer than the two…

@shanaber I just had to do the math, out of curiosity. So far, for the ~48 weeks of 2018, I've done 162h of running and 62h of cycling (assuming that counts as vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity? not counting things like climbing, skiing or hiking, since there's no easy way to see the yearly total on strava). Run…

@dewit Yes, I run when it snows. Snow is actually fine, *ice* is the problem. Sometimes I cannot run on the path in the parks, because between being shoveled, thawing and refreezing they are a slippery mess. But running in the untouched snow right next to it is fine. If the "untouched snow" is deep enough, you get an extra…

My sister gets it. Only she called it by the fancy Latin name, "digitus mortuus" (which, if you understand a bit of Latin, is an accurate description of the way the fingers look >:) ). She has one of these sheepskin steering wheel covers. It looks ridiculous, but apparently it helps a lot - might be an alternative to…

@zeesparrow Great! Kudos on running 5km :+1: @Machafin @amirahdaboss @rheddmobile @garygse @dreamer12151 @MegaMooseEsq (hope I'm not forgetting anyone) Congratulations on your PRs! @MegaMooseEsq Yay! Great news that your mother is doing better, and that you now get to enjoy your own house! And you have a running room…
