One week of not following the thread - thanks to a couple crazy ~14h days at work, followed by a lazy "recovery" weekend without switching on my computer - and I am thirty pages behind. Thirty! I went back the last 10 pages, but there's no way I can comment on everything... At least I got a nice bit of exercise this…

@Machka9 SleepAsAndroid . I wrote about it already in reply to your question here , I guess you didn't see it  --- Thanks everyone for the replies and the different perspectives. It's impressive how many of you still exercise without enough sleep! I guess as long as it's just one week every now and then, it does not…

I just downloaded google fit this weekend, but I just kept the phone in my pocket, never started any workout recording, and was almost creeped out when I looked at it in the evening and saw that it had accurately detected a bike ride on Sunday afternoon! Like, how could google possibly know that? My theory after seeing…

I did it once, when I was frustrated how hard it was to find running tights for women with pockets (other than that annoying tiny key pocket at the back that most of them have). I followed this pattern: https://shop.fehrtrade.com/collections/bottoms/products/duathlon-shorts My main problem was finding the fabrics. I…

e.t.a: here's a warmup alternative to stretching before a run. Looking for this video just reminded me I don't do it as often as I should... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJo7_MiRLkU

Great work on completing week 2!! :+1: A lot of people swear on foam rollers for any kind of tightness. I can't stand the things, but it seems every other runner I talk to adores them, maybe they would help with your leg aches. I think today the agreed-upon exercise wisdom is to avoid staticstretches before the muscles are…

I own rollers. I have to admit I only used them the first winter I owned them. My sense of balance isn't great, so they require focus, I can't casually ride them while watching TV , as I had expected. For that, the type of trainer where you fix one wheel would be better. On the other hand, the rollers are more challenging.…

glad to know I'm not the only one. It seems so stupid. It's not that much blood, but apperently my way to deal with the entire "doctor instead of breakfast thing" is to eat chocolate all day and freeze already at the idea of going outside to run. Maybe it would help if my work had smoothie & cereal vending machines instead…

@rheddmobile I *love* the unicorn outfit!! 0 kids visiting my apartment last night. That makes 0 Halloween visits in total in my life. Lol, I guess my location is off by a couple ten thousands of kilometres  So I could have gone running, but I postponed it to tonight. I had a doctors appointment in the…

@PastorVincent No, I guess not, but you have other brands. I saw this on amazon : https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010OVC28W . No idea how "heavy duty" it is, but at least they claim it works as a "tough, waterproof, protective cover".

Yes! This is the first time since, like, forever, that I manage to post on page 1 of the running challenge thread! After we have 300, 200, 100 and 0 miles already, I will just break that streak and set a goal in kilometres ^^ Looks like I'll end up with ~130km for October, so my goal for November will be 150km.

@7lenny7 I'm really sorry you have to put up with that peg leg. I hope your recovery goes well! (... if you do get the parrot, at least you have a great Halloween costume? )

@PastorVincent If you do this, get the superglue with 2-octyl cyanoacrylate. Not the one with ethyl cyanoacrylate, against which lots of people can develop allergies after repeated exposure. The 2-octyl cyanoacrylate is the more modern stuff which is also used in medical glue, as far as I know. (…

That's an impressive goal! Do you have experience with backpacking trips already? I guess if you cycle to work every day, you already have some endurance and fitness base to start. Maybe you can use the commute to get in some walking or running training as well? Sometimes I bike to work and run home, then run to work the…

+1 both for Hal Higdon plans (I training for all my long races with his plans) and for strength training. Although most Hal Higdon plans are 5 days per week (with exception of HM3), so if you currently run 3 days/week, that might be a bit much. You wrote you want to increase your long run by one mile per week. You should…

This. Not only how your running-goals change, just overall fitness goals. My 5k was better last year, when I was (a) running official races and (b) running 5-6 days per week. My best 5k in 2017 was in 26:26. This year I'm running less, maybe 4 days per week. Because last winter I was busy learning to ski, I started to do…

If you want to join a climbing club, don't wait! The best way to get better at climbing is climbing  I go to an indoor bouldering gym about once per week - not a club with organised training, just together with a couple of friends. And while there are some overhanging routes where lack of strength is what keeps me…

I'm not a fast runner, even after many years. At least 80% of my runs are between 11 and 12 miles per minute, so I don't find your 10:15 pathetic at all! Despite being so slow, I consider myself a "real runner" ;) My fastest mile ever was in 7:36min, but that was during a race, my everyday runs are much, much slower. My…

I really like fitnessblender videos. I copied a few links for you below, but I have no idea if they are suitable after a back surgery or not! You will have to judge that yourself. They usually have a list of the exercises in the description, so you can first read what they contain before doing them.…

Lot's of cardio exercises you could try: https://www.gaiam.com/blogs/discover/the-best-cardio-exercises-for-bad-knees - figure out what works for you without hurting your knee further! And I agree with the above poster: "fix" the knee. How did you injure it in the first place? Bit by bit due to overtraining, or did you…

Congratulations on starting! As a kid, I hated running whenever I had to do it in school. Now I love it - best exercise ever for me! I started running a couple years ago, before I owned a smartphone, just "run 1 min, walk 1 min" while constantly staring at my watch to see if the minute was over yet ^^ I know a lot of…

I second fitnessblender! On their website they also have a search function where you can select the equipment type to use. Regarding the weight of the dumbbells, it totally depends on the exercise you are doing if your 3/10 pound ones will feel heavy or not 😉 I have some adjustable dumbbells that go up to 10kg (~20lbs). It…

Maybe use a tyre instead of a full car? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOcHZ2jvrqU Or I read about doing "manual treadmill running" at the gym (incline 10 degrees, speed zero, place your hands against the front handles and run hard = same pushing type of workout). No need to buy anything. I would never consider pushing a…

@polskagirl01 It's easy to do. I have an unfortunate amount of experience with it [[ Sometimes I forget to start my watch when I start running and only notice after a kilometre or two. Then I want to take the first half that was recorded with Zombies-Run and add it to the second half of the run from the watch (which has…

Pasting this here from the monthly thread so it will be easier to find the strava link in the future:

@polskagirl01 Sorry I didn't reply right away (spent Fri-Mon at my parents 50th wedding anniversary, didn't get a single chance to check in at MFP). Thank you for creating the account! Letting people tag runs and adding them seems much better than giving everyone the password. If you need one more person to accept requests…

@rheddmobile Green running shoes would be awesome! The closest I have is one pair in teal: and one pair in dark blue (and there I actually paid 10 Euro extra to have them in that color rather than "coral"...). All my other running shoes are pink, purple or orange. Not by choice! The last time I fell on my knee, I was…

@Orphia @juliet3455 Hmm, I was thinking either exporting all the gpx files and sending them to one person - (export to gpx is easy to do from the strava website in the browser). And then maybe use something like gpsvisualizer.com . For a plain map http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/map_input?form=jpg to create a map  set…

@Orphia that's really great of you that you want to create a summary from everyone's runs! I'm not sure which info you want. My timeslot is correct. 16.47km in 2:02 hours. The Strava activity: https://www.strava.com/activities/1903790230 I don't know if everyone tracked their run with Strava or Garmin- if yes, maybe we…

TRX is great, and there are really cheap ones available. But you have to have a place to mount it! I used it in the past until my last move. I cannot use it in my current apartment , so it's spent the last couple of years in the closet. If your apartment has a place to install it, you should consider giving it a try. I…
