You can do the same things as your partner, with different weights. Or also different number of sets/reps. On the one hand, I've wouldn't buy into advice that to "tone" your muscles, woman should only do light weights/high reps. On the other hand, I've also read in some articles that some studies show that women need less…

My personal discovery about motivation: it gets much harder to get up and do something once you are comfortably on the couch ;-) When I started running again after a break and only had times in the evenings, I found that the best way to ensure I stuck to my training plan was to change into my running clothes at work before…

I would love to get one too! But I think you need to have a standing desk for this to work - otherwise I don't think I can reach the keyboard while walking on the walking pad. And where I work, you can only get a height-adjustable desk if you have a certificate from a doctor that you have back problems. As if it wouldn't…

I remember reading a while back that tart cherry juice also helps. I just had a look, and found the study that article was probably based on: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2874510/ I did buy a few bottles of the juice for the weekend of my first marathon - I still felt sore the next day ^^ But I can't judge…

There are also some newer studies that the muscle-building / -repairing benefits of protein depend on the amount of protein you get in a meal, and that you only profit from 20-25g protein per meal, anything beyond that doesn't add that much value according to those studies. I would rather try to get 20g of protein four…

What helps to a degree against fogging up is also shaving foam. No kidding - put a thin layer on the glasses, wipe it off again with a paper towel, but don't clean with water or anything. I can't judge how well it compares to proper anti-fog spray. I've worn contacts for years and never had to worry about my glasses, but…

I have the TomTom Adventure watch. In principle it works for swimming too - but it doesn't do the job very well. It relies on recognizing the turn movement to count a lap, not GPS. For some reason that works okay in 25m pools, but not so well in 50m pools. I only used it a couple of times for swimming, but from what I…

@sijomial Kudos on reaching your goals already! This November is not really a cycling month for me  I've only done 24.5km so far, and the month is more than halfway over! I'm back to mostly working from home, so no commutes. And the weather outside is dreadful... Good resolution for today was a ride in the…

Thanks, @icemom011 ! Fortunately, I don't have any serious symptoms. No headache, nausea, vomiting, balance problems, trouble sleeping or anything, so I haven't gone to see a doctor - especially since I'd rather avoid crowded ER waiting rooms in the current second wave of Covid infections. But you're totally right that I…

Few more commutes from me, for a total of 128.5km for October so far. And a very scary experience: I must have had a crash(?) during my ride home last Thursday, but I don't remember anything about it. One moment I'm outside the office, unlocking my bike and waving goodbye to a colleague getting into his car, and the next…

What a beauty, @sijomial! 2.5 commutes for me so far in October (writing from the office o:) ): Wed, 10/7/2020 11.8 km + 17.2 km Tue, 10/13/2020 11.8 km + 12.8 km Thu, 10/15/2020 12.5km + tbd 66.2km for October I'm toying with the idea of buying a gravel bike for winter commuting. Something with big tyres and disc brakes.…

I'm a bit late to join the party. But I didn't do any cycling yet this month, so I didn't miss logging anything  It's getting kinda grey/cold/disgusting outside at the moment, so my goal for this will be to motivate myself to keep riding anyway. Let's day 250km for October.
-
Totally behind on this thread, but I'll still update my monthly result: 10 bike commutes, two of them with "extended" rides home, for a total of 293.9km in September.
-
@helen_goldthorpe Congratulations on the new power PB! Are your race results in yet? @ccrdragon I came off the bike dripping everywhere yesterday too - but in my case it was rain water  Second time this month already that the weather forecast looked okay enough to take the bike to work, and it started pouring…

I'm in again! I just bought a Garmin Vivosport, and looked at the "challenges" the Garmin app offers. The cycling ones it's showing me are "200km cycling" and "16 hours of cycling". So I'll make those my goals for the month. I'm not sure if I can hit the 16 hours, but we'll see! Tue, 9/1/2020 - 23.5km commute (80min)
-
@sijomial Thanks for the detailed reply! After ~90 minutes I usually need to take a short break to loosen up my shoulders and shake out my hands; I don't know if that is necessary due to a non-perfect bike setup or just lack of time in the saddle. I didn't know a thing about bike fitting when I got my road bike. I was just…

Two weeks of vacation are over, back to work! Tue, 8/4/2020 23.9km commute Thu, 8/6/2020 32.8km commute plus a bit Sun, 8/9/2020 46.6 km vacation ride to a mineralic spring Mon, 8/10/2020 19.6km to a historic village and back Thu, 8/13/2020 19.5km to another historic village and back Mon, 8/17/2020 Bike tour along a river…

@pridesabtch That gravel bike looks awesome! Fingers crossed your dealer can get it in your size :+1: @sijomial The bike fitting sounds very useful. I hope you stay happy with the results for a long time! How long did the fitting process take? My current saddle is coming apart, and I have trouble finding the same model…

In May I reached ~125km with a 100km goal, June 180km with a 150km goal, July ~210km with a 200km goal. So new goal for August: 250km? I have no idea honestly if I can manage that, since I'm going on vacation for 2 weeks :-) No long distance travel to exotic places, obviously, but two weeks in a camping car a few hours…

I just caught up to this thread - great riding everyone! :+1: Didn't have much time for looking in here in the past week. And sadly, not a singe ride "just for cycling" for me. But with 8 commutes and 1 ride to the post office, I managed to accumulate 209.5km for July, not too bad all things considered. See you in August!…

I'm quite late to join this month - mostly since I couldn't decide what goad to set! A logical progression would have been 200km, but so far the weather has been too windy and wet to do any fun rides. Not hot here anymore either - two weeks ago we had 32°C/90°F, this lovely Friday afternoon it's 13°C/55F outside. At least…
-
@PGKY That sounds really cool! I like running at night, but for some reason I never go cycling when it's dark (apart from commutes in winter). But if the roads were closed for cars, I would be really motivated, no matter the hour! @TakeTheLongWayHome Awesome accomplishments this month! You'll beat last month total for sure…
-
@janejellyroll Woohoo, well done running your marathon, that's awesome! All by yourself - I'm not sure I could have done that. I've only done two marathons, but both times the last 5km were so though, I'm not sure I would have kept running if I hadn't been following other runners / known that there was a finish line with a…

Try it! If you can drink from a cup at an aid station, why not eat ice cream. What can go wrong? Worst that can happen is that you end up wearing sticky ice cream for the rest of the run. ....actually, that sounds pretty bad. I'm glad that didn't happen to me :D

It was! I had to lick a bit of the overhanging stuff first, so that it wouldn't drip on my hands, but then I was good to go! Just holding it in my hand and every couple of steps take a lick. I got a few weird looks from people I passed, but I think they were just jealous

After two weeks of work insanity, I'm hopelessly behind on this thread. But thanks to a cancelled meeting, I had an extra long lunch break and finally got my long run done :) It was a stupid time for a run - sunny and 25°C/77°F, but the weather forecast has a severe weather warning for thunderstorms, hail and heavy rain…

@Avidkeo I have been trying out the "Run with Hal" app for a few weeks now, and he is *never* happy with me! I constantly find myself arguing with him, but the app doesn't listen  Like a few weeks ago I was supposed to do two 6.5km base runs, but on one day I only had time for 4.7km, so I did 8km the other day.…
-
@Machka9 Lovely pictures! I always like riding by the water side. @AlanKmfp Your bike's looking good! I wish you a good "maiden voyage" with the new tyres! I finally got my first ride of the month in today. 13km to work, 34.7 km ride home in the afternoon. The way home included a detour, obviously  Down to the river…

I'm in again! Or I will be, if the apocalyptic rain ever stops :D At the beginning of the week it was warm and sunny, but I went running instead of cycling. I had a 30km route planned for yesterday - but there was so much rain, they even had to close the highway a few kilometres away from where I live, due to flooding.…

Actually, I do use Strava to track my running shoe distance, otherwise this would work great. But after posting my comment above, it suddenly dawned on me that there might be another option: the Tomtom website. My GPS watch is a Tomtom and syncs to their Mysports in addition to Strava. I didn't find that site very useful,…
