  • Encouraging kids to be healthy is great and if this is naturally how this kid developed, okay. But kids are already inundated with pictures of celebrities who they think they should look like. I feel like giving this kid so much attention (and distributing pictures like the posed muscley one) will mess him up (i.e., "do…
  • I think this is disturbing. I feel just as uncomfortable looking at this kid's picture as I do when I see pictures of little girls with spray tans and fake eyelashes. (To be fair, I didn't watch the video, just saw the picture and skimmed the article.)
  • I lost close to 70 pounds a few years ago. Last summer when I was being fitted for my wedding dress, the seamstress said something like "OK, so what happened to your boobs?" I had thought the change was more due to getting older, but then everybody (seamstress, my mom and my sister) assured me that no, they were saggy cuz…
  • Thanks for posting this!
  • I think you make really, really good points on a topic I'd never given much thought to. I hope that you reach your goals and can be a role model for other girls who feel conflicted about health vs. conforming to their community's expectations. Actually, regardless of your weight loss success, I think your attitude is…
  • Go to allrecipes.com or supercook.com and enter in the foods he WILL eat to find some recipes that might work.
  • The movies is one of the few places I *have* to bring a purse. We bring a big ziplock bag (or 2) of air-popped popcorn--usually with olive oil and a little salt and sometimes chocolate chips mixed in. In the past, I've also brought cucumber slices and things like that, but we prefer the popcorn because that way we don't…
  • I relate to this. I just wrote a long response, but realized maybe you don't want long responses. So here's one simple strategy: One thing that I do that helps sometimes is to write down—or tell someone or post on my MFP page—things like “I’m done eating until 3:00.” I know no one cares, but I feel like I’d be lying if I…

  • Cheap and easy idea: Stop weighing yourself. Pricier, harder, and potentially painful idea: Find a therapist and figure out why you're sabotaging yourself and then deal with that issue. Good luck.
  • I'm sure this isn't true for all men, but my husband's perception of his body is as distorted as mine is of my body...except in the other direction. After he lost 125 pounds (and was still not "slim"), he said that he didn't know how he could have lost that much because he never considered himself fat. Once in a while when…
  • Are people getting paid to think up diets like this?
  • I have the FT4 and has had the same issues since I got it a few months ago. I spend about half of each workout fiddling with the strap and the watch, usually to no avail. But sometimes it works fine. I recently sent an email to the Polar Guy (address on their website) describing the problem and asking if I should send it…
  • I'm also curious if anyone has a recommendation for a simple, non-girly beginners' workout DVD. (I feel compelled to state that I wouldn't call adopting a healthier lifestyle a "bandwagon" but since that's neither here nor there, I'm using parentheses.)
  • Call your doctor immediately. After you explain the crisis, s/he will refer you for emergency plastic surgery because no one wants you to meet these people looking like a regular woman. Good luck. -LP
  • I never thought of doing this before. I have had the problem of certain pans being too heavy to weigh and this is a great solution! Thanks!
  • On my scale, I can "tare" (zero out) the bowl, so I put the bowl on first, tare it, then pour in the sauce. If I couldn't do that, I guess I'd subtract the weight of the bowl as you said, though.
  • For pizza crust? I'm intrigued....and a little grossed out by the idea of putting sauce and veggies or any sort of pizza-ish topping on a rice cake. (But I'd probably eat it anyway.)
  • I think lots of us can relate to thinking we don't need help to lose weight! I'm glad, though, that you realize that actually you probably do need guidance (and support!) and are ready to spend a little bit more energy focusing on taking care of yourself--which of course will benefit your husband also. As for your exercise…
  • I skimmed the blog entry and while I completely agree with what you're saying, the first sentence doesn't seem to fit with the rest. As I think you kind of mention near the end (the part about guilt being in the forefront of our minds), the mirror isn't actually a very good way to determine weight-loss success for many…
  • Hi Linda, What has kept you from being successful in the past? It's likely that other MFPers might be able to relate and then offer you more helpful support/advice. Good luck! -LP
  • I've been using (and love!) Joseph's 60-calorie flax & oatbran tortillas as pizza crust. It's much closer to "real pizza" than english muffins for any other kind of tortilla that I've tried. Hope you enjoy your pizza as much as I've been enjoying mine lately!
  • I started out doing 5 minutes a day (in addition to recumbent bike) and gradually increased my time. This is pretty much how I start using any new exercise that my body initially tries to tell me I "can't" do. Good luck and stick with it--you'll be so proud of yourself! -LP
  • I have noticed this too. It makes me feel pissed off at people. It makes me wonder if maybe I (without meaning to) treat people differently based on their looks. It also makes me wonder if the difference in treatment has more to do with my actual weight/body/looks or if people are just responding to the signals I send out…
  • It's possible that you're still eating too much (especially if you're depending on MFP to tell you how many calories you burned, you could be eating 100s of extra calories), or that you're not eating enough, or the quality of the foods is negatively impacting weight loss. Definitely don't give up, though, because you are…
  • I'm always over on sugar also. And usually carbs. My first goal is to really get control over staying within my calorie allowance (e.g. not bingeing or oversnacking) and get most of those calories from healthy foods. When I really feel like I've mastered that, I might go back to trying to lower my sugar/carb intake...but…
  • In addition to focusing on smaller goals (e.g., losing 10 pounds--and then getting some sort of non-food reward), focus on non-weight related "lifestyle" goals. Each week (or month) choose ONE thing you want to work on. For example, this week/month you could focus on getting in 8 glasses of water a day (or start with 4 if…
  • If you can't find the power within yourself, maybe you're not ready yet. When you are ready, though, you'll find support, guidance, and tips here. Good luck!

  • You may have already done this, but I would suggest talking to her preschool teacher and maybe the director of the preschool, and your daughter's doctor. People who know her may be able to offer more help than we can. Also, I don't know if she's too young for this, but maybe a consultation with a play therapist or…
  • Buy meat when it's on sale and freeze it. You can also freeze berries and some cheeses. Plan your meals/snacks around the weekly specials at your grocery store. Try to avoid buying meals/snacks on a whim (they're pricey and probably less healthy than what you would get at home). Nuts and some other things are cheapest (in…
  • I started a new job 2 years ago and while the hours weren't as long as yours, it was more physically demanding than any work I'd done before, and I came home totally drained in the afternoons. What ended up helping me was to PLAN a workout after work and think about it all day. Like I'd wake up in the morning thinking "I'm…
