Cool! But I'll stick with my "I want that and I can have it*" diet. B) * In a reasonable amount, based on my calorie goals.

Modern sit-coms? Yeah, Seinfeld was pretty great. Frasier too. But I gotta give a shout-out here for "I Love Lucy". Along with "The Honeymooners", it pretty much defined what a sit-com was. And if you don't think "The Andy Griffith Show" was hilarious, I have no use for you...

First, I wouldn't be surprised if the reason you've gained 10 lbs. in 6 months has more to do with how your desk job has changed your eating habits than how it's reduced your level of activity. So I'd focus more on tracking your eating and staying under a realistic calorie budget. Exercise is a secondary, nice-to-have…

Well, they got the "for idiots" part of their diet plan right at least.

I'm at about 2100 and it has been working great for me. Then again, I'm male and 6'3", so there's that. Anyway, I say give it a shot. If it works and you can stick with it, that's what counts. Slow progress is still progress, right?

Nothing odd about that. Portland (Oregon) is very cool! As is the Oregon coast. We're going back there in the very near future, in fact. But the coolest place I've ever been? Toss-up between: * Halstatt, Austria * Bernese Oberland, Switzerland What can I say? I like mountains and lakes...

Actually, peanut butter is one of those things I do usually weigh, for two reasons: 1. It's calorie-dense, so small errors make a big difference. If what I think it 2 tablespoons (one serving) is really 2.5 tablespoons, that's about a 50 calorie error. 2. Weighing peanut butter is actually easier than measuring it with a…

You could just not go to the gym. Plenty of ways to strength train right in your own living room, even if you don't have any equipment. For example, check out the book "Body by You", or the "You Are Your Own Gym" smartphone app, both from Mark Lauren.

Not completely unrealistic. But you're right that you shouldn't worry about your time. It's a guaranteed PR anyway! But if you must latch on to goal, I suggest giving yourself three goals instead of just one. 1. Finish the race, period. 2. Finish the race under a realistic and do-able time. 3. Finish the race under a…

More dangerous that DHMO? :o

Well, if you want it to measure distance and you don't want a footpod, you're going to need to get one with GPS. Those are the only two decent ways (that I know of) to measure distance, with GPS being what I prefer personally. But if you're already carrying your phone and using mapmyrun, couldn't you use that for distance?…

Yeah, for me, things like spinach, pickles, etc., just don't have enough calories (in the amounts typically used) to be worth being super-precise. If I'm off by half, it's still barely a blip. But it is worth it to carefully weigh/measure most other things. Especially calorie-dense foods like oats, butter, and so on. A few…

Not everyone does.

Most of the sodium in packaged ramen is from the little seasoning packet. So adding only half the packet is one option. It would still be high in sodium, but not a total sodium bomb. Or you could not even use the packet and do your own seasoning using something like Mrs. Dash.

This ^ If the only way you can get something is to take out a loan, then by definition you cannot afford it. I don't think getting the surgery is selfish at all in the OP's case, but it is a luxury, no different from buying a ski boat or going on a nice cruise vacation. Nothing wrong with any of that if you can actually…

Yeah, the problem with many tasty drinks isn't so much the booze... it's the sugar they typically have. If you mostly drink sweet drinks, you'll have to really limit yourself (or budget plenty of calories that day!) Some low-cal options, some of which have already been mentioned: Cuba Libre: Shot of rum, Diet Coke, on the…

Here lately it's been Trader Joe's "Triple Ginger" cookies. Three cookies are 65 calories and they taste amazing.

Imagine there was someone--let's call him Karl--who was an illiterate adult. At some point he got sick and tired about how his inability to read and write was holding him back, and he decided to do something about it. So now he goes to the public library and studies. Mostly children's books for now, with plenty of…

"only do 40 mins Cardio about 4 times a week." Only? That's pretty good if you ask me. Certainly way better than the average person.

I'm of the school that if you have to think that hard about how you're breathing, you're probably running too fast for your current level of fitness (and likely not able to pass the Talk Test).

Nor did it help that Supreme's Pizza was right across the street and Little Steve's around the corner... :-) We might have unknowingly crossed paths. I was there from '87 to '92, but was only an official student for the first part of that. I would still play for the occasional studio session or Caf show for my friends who…

Welcome! Fellow Berklee-ite here too. I attended back in the late '80s, although I didn't wind up graduating from there. Congrats on the 60 pounds. That's pretty impressive in such a short time!

Too much water can be bad, and I've seen it with my own eyes at marathons, where a condition called hyponatremia is not uncommon: http://runrocknroll.competitor.com/medical/do-the-salt

Awesome! Congrats! Yes, you should have some rest days where you either don't run at all, or just walk (at this point). The resting is when your body starts rebuilding/strengthening itself, so those days off are important! I also think you might be running too fast, given your description. Do you know about the "talk…
