The answer to the question is "no". That was pretty much the whole point of my original post.

Pretzels and hummus; fresh fruit; air popped pop corn....

Earning my black belt at 53 may be my favorite fitness achievement. I joined to role model to my sedentary step sons, who joined with me. The super slow pace (2:43) worked. I don't feel like I raced at all, so I am good for my classes.

I finished a half marathon this morning. My objective was to go way slower than I am capable so as to have less recovery issues. (I am working on my second degree black belt in Taekwondo, and don't want to have to back off on my classes this coming week.) I though I came out WAY slow. I made the mistake of not turning on…

I thought some of the recommendations regarding distance of the various training runs may have interested you. At the time I posted it, you also seemed to feel your pace was right. I apologize if I was frustrated at your quick opinion that we all gave you bad advice. It just wasn't obvious to me that your results proved…

I don't eat McDonald's; but its potential impact on my weight has nothing to do with that decision. You may be over-complicating things by worrying too much about "types" of food. The key is to create a calorie deficit. People have done that even while consuming McDonald's and moderate portions of "sugary goodness."…

Can I respectfully ask what was offensive about it?

2005 Duckhorn Reserve Merlot is outstanding, although very pricey. I like more recent vintages of Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon, and they are generally reasonably affordable. I lost over 60 pounds drinking wine most days. I log it like anything else. I have a wine glass where the top of a picture on it is a precise…

The Hanson plan was not designed exclusively for elite runners or Olympians. It has been used successfully with elites as well as marathoners at other levels. Nevertheless, I was not necessarily recommending that program to you. The point I was trying to make is that people have had great success with long runs four miles…

The Hanson marathon training program has the longest run at 16 miles. They have trained Olympic marathoners. Given you have finished one marathon, I understand why you think you know better. You asked one question about whether at a certain point in your program you should taper or try to force one longer run in. People…

I look for fresh fish options. Salmon, a small side of pasta, minestrone etc... Italian American cuisine can be calorie dense; but this is not how real Italians eat....

Junk food is really not a helpful definition. When I am on mile 22 of a marathon, a jelly bean can be essential nutrition. Chocolate in moderation confers health benefits. It is actually much easier to label a total diet as healthy or not than any one food.

I also WAS a clinical social worker (MSW, University of Michigan, 1988). I therapist, clinical supervisor and program director during that season of my life. I earned my second Masters Degree (MBA) in 2002 and transitioned from direct clinical work to the corporate world at that time. You are correct that the distinction…

For someone needing treatment, the available eating disorder would likely apply (i.e. binge eating disorder). Similarly, the existence of gambling addictions is widely acknowledged, but the applicable DSM V diagnosis is, I believe, "Gambling Disorder." Clinicians do assess for food addiction. For those interested, here is…

Sorry, I should have quoted the post to which I was responding above.

My most recent source for the definitions I provided come from the U.S. NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse. I suppose I probably first learned the distinction in Undergrad and/or grad school. These definitions are NOT diagnoses. When assessing someone with alcohol issues, I too would use 303.9 when the individual met the…

I have seen posts of people asking for help in managing their "sugar addiction" where people have responded with only the following (AND NOTHING ELSE): "Sugar addiction is not a thing." I agree that I have never seen you respond this way; but I have seen others do so. I really don't think, in the context of someone asking…

Addiction does NOT HAVE to entail withdrawal. DEPENDENCE does. People are addicted to things that don't cause withdrawal. This was the primary point of my original post. You insist that you read it carefully. I can't see how that's possible if you missed that point.
-
I would also add that a behavior can be the result of an addiction process and also be irresponsible. These are not mutually exclusive.

I have said repeatedly in this thread that there are some big differences between drug addiction and things like food or gambling addiction. You chose to pretend I never made those statements. My primary expertise is in severe psychiatric disorders, and in people with "dual diagnosis" (i.e. mental illness plus substance…

Well my definitions are not my own. You respond as though I came up with this out of thin air. So far what you have offered me seems to be from the dictionary. Had I known I could have been trained by Webster's I could have saved thousands.
-
Where did you receive your clinical training?
-
You totally didn't get it. I wonder if it's worth trying to explain it another way..... Is this the dictionary you are quoting?

The voice of reason clearly cries out that you are chosing to redefine the term addiction. I maintain you either did not read, or you do not understand, or you are chosing to ignore aspects of my original post.
-
"Desperation" is not part of the criteria for addictions. A degree of compulsion is; it does not have to reach the point of desperation. I never claimed that the situations were identical; or that the level of addiction is anywhere near as severe. You still haven't really read my original post. Wow.
-
No, it's not on the same scale.

In my days as a therapist, although food issues was never my specialty, I remember someone sitting in my office in tears because they went to multiple fast food drive-throughs the evening before because they were ashamed to have the fast food workers see how much they were eating. The emotional pain was real, and the…

Exactly. Cigarettes are addicting; but people don't steal from there family etc...to engage in this addiction.
-
This is true. But are there any circumstances where someone would HAVE to risk arrest to get a brownie? They are inexpensive and legal. We are arguing a distinction that is not relevant to the definition. Obviously there are biiig differences in types of and degrees of addiction.
