I woul argue that the 600 pound person who persists in overeating despite being bedridden fits your definition. In extreme examples, people have devistated their families. But the degree of damage you describe is NOT required for something to be a clinical addiction.
-
In my opinion, it is likely the very opposite.
-
@msemotan given that addictions can be entirely behavioral/psychological, I do believe food addictions occur. In other words, people do having cravings that are so strong that they engage in eating behaviors that badly endanger their health. Outside of foods with substances such as caffeine in them, based upon what I have…

I didn't think anyone would actually read my post.

You are about to get a flurry of messages that will tell you your expectations are unrealistic. Much of the first week loss is water. You cannot expect to maintain that. A healthy rate of weight loss is around 1-2 pounds per/week depending on how much a person needs to lose. Losing faster than that will likely result in…

Exactly how is one to "notice" this? I think data is required to back up this kind of point. What is the source of your 5% number?

I always guess. Having cooked in restaurants while I was in college, I am pretty good at eyeballing. Another option is to find an analogue in a similar restaurant. Chili's Grilled chicken sandwich, for example, is listed as 700 calories as served NOT including the fries. This is probably reasonably close.

@GaleHawkins I have seen an interesting real-life experiment with my step son when he changed from being full time at his fathers to our house. First, it is important to understand that, as a matter of principle, he has NO INTEREST in exercising self control. He recently turned 19 and his credo is that he wants to do what…

Great post. I don't think we are close to understanding all the mediators of cravings; but there is certainly more to it all than "self control."

Without more information, no one on earth can answer your question. Do you log your cheat days? They alone could be the issue. Do you carefully weigh and measure? Are you logging your exercise accurately? Without knowing that, all anyone can say is that you are not at a deficit.

I don't count it if the protein in it doesn't absorb. I'm already losing more than MFP projects ignoring the marinade. I've lost 58 pounds since January 3.....

I am not disputing any of this and I think it kind of proves my point. From a population standpoint, even controlling for weight, on average people who exercise have less healthcare utilization, fewer health issues, and a lower mortality rate than those who do not. Yet you are doing well. You are not a population group,…

Tell your doctor everything you have posted here. Why ask here but not the person monitoring your healthcare?

People can do things that endanger their health quietly without any risk of anyone's scorn. There is a good deal of data, for example, to suggest that even thin looking people who do not exercise are putting themselves at risk as compared to people who maintain a regular exercise regiment. The risk of THEIR behavior is not…

I generally eat 10-15 pieces of whatever I want plus miso soup. Most of my choices are in the lower fat range. I find that it is plenty easy for me to make room. The key for me is to count, and try to log as accurately as possible.
-
Your numbers are accurate. If course, I've seen no evidence that there is any different between HFCS and cane sugar anyways.... I consume relatively little added sugar; but I don't think it is a big deal at all in moderation. I use it when making Asian dishes.....

If one considers the number of foods with this sweetener, it is hard to believe it's not true. I think they simply measure it by annual purchase patterns. It's in hot dogs, sausage, soda, pancake syrup, ketchup, barbecue sauce, fruit flavored beverages, etc...Among a ton of other things I am forgetting. I don't have time…

Even when my my mileage is crazy I still need to track. One year, during the five months I trained for a 12 hour race, I gained about 7 pounds. It wasn't enough for me to notice until I under-performed during the race (187 miles).

When I pre-log the evening before, I make sure to leave myself 400 calories to work with for snacks when the between meal hunger gets challenging.

It is a decent "screener". But it sometimes misses on both sides. It incorrectly identifies some people as obese and overweight; and it misses people who have more body fat than their BMI suggests. In a recent study looking at people >=30 BMI. 95% were obese according to body fat measures. The bigger problem was that there…

I can now lose weight eating the same number of average calories daily that caused me to gain in the first place, due to my activity level. I didn't really have a "bad diet". I was eating on average about 400-700 calories more than I was burning daily during a challenging time in my life because I stopped training for…

Did you think his comment was classy? The Viagra analogy had no relevance. Is that obtuse? I don't think so. BMI is not diagnostic on an individual level. It is a measurement used at the population level.
-
I assume you have a point other than to demonstrate a very poor understanding of logic.
-
The creator of the concept of BMI said that it was ONLY useful to measure population trends and was NOT an acceptable measure to diagnose individuals.

Read her original post and decide whether your condemnation is fair. She would be happy to prepare her own food. I think people project a great deal on these kind of posts.

I eat the real things, log, and lose. I would never do this for a wide variety of reasons. If you don't go crazy, the chips are not that bad at all! No one has suggested tacos; but I find that soft shelled tacos can be a nice option.

Read all the posts for the person towards which my response was directed. If the argument was about the inherent risks of obesity the argument would be over.

Which of these organizations compell you to hold overweight people in contempt? I need direct quotes on this one. The funny thing is I don't disagree that obesity increases health risks. But that isn't really what's being debated here.
