Quitting smoking slows down your resting heart rate (a good thing), so your Basal Metabolic Rate is indeed lower. I agree that tracking is the answer here, though.

I bake my own about every other day using Jim Lahey's famous no-knead recipe. http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/11376-no-knead-bread No more than 5 minutes prep (but a long ferment). Just flour water yeast and salt. It's foolproof, fantastic and makes your house smell like heaven. All you need is a cast iron pot or a…

Thanks for the fantastic video. I can't imagine the guts and determination (and wattage) it took to make that climb on a citybike. I tried climbing the WIlliamsburg bridge a while back and it took me almost 10 minutes to recover at the top. I turned around and came back home, unable to face the return climb. Manhattan is…

I started riding July 25th to burn calories because I found walking excruciatingly boring. I live in New York and I'm slightly embarrassed to admit I ride a 45-pound 3-speed CitiBike sharebike because I can't afford anything else. The highest cadence I can muster produces about 17mph on these beasts. And since there's a 45…

Now that's a real Southern word. I bet most non-Southerners would only know it from To Kill a Mockingbird. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chifforobe

Had to remove a link in my watchband a while back to keep it from sliding around annoyingly when I exercise. It's starting to do it again. Have reached the final notch in my 40" belt and it's still a little loose.

I like the steaming method best because you only have to wait a minute for the water to start boiling. I use a kitchen timer app on my phone to remind me when they're done and ready to be dropped in a bowl of cold water. It's annoying when eggs crack, which still happens sometimes with this method. An elegant solution is…

Some of the best kimchi I ever tasted comes from this recipe (with a really good video) from Maangchi (Emily Kim), a wonderful YouTube ambassador of Korean cuisine: http://www.maangchi.com/recipe/easy-kimchi I've made this over a dozen times and it's always come out great.

Houston only lost it's Fattest City in America title because Birmingham, Alabama became even fatter. Obesity rates have continued to rise in Houston. You should take "lean muscle" marketing hype with a grain of salt. On a similar note, Mexico recently became even fatter than the US due to their increasing adoption of the…

Sounds like she has it scientifically removed by the "Joshutron."

The alpine deer live well below the treeline in the valleys. Perhaps she shot a delightfully endangered ibex or a chamois and is claiming it's venison.

So much venison. Perhaps the chauffeur hit a deer?

Have your legs been sore after running? I recently began exercising daily with a 1000 calorie deficit and I experienced a similar weight gain and then stalled at a slightly lower weight for over a week. Then I had a quick drop of 3 pounds and have been pretty steadily losing since. I had started cycling every day and in…

It is so important to log food and exercise accurately. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but here's my noob story. I just started logging my calorie intake less than a month ago. I had had gone from 260lbs to around 235lbs a year after quitting booze, but after quitting a 38-year pack a day smoking habit four months…

Training myself to eat an early breakfast to jumpstart the metabolism. Burning 1000 calories daily biking so I can eat whatever I damn well please--within reason.

At high speeds, walking burns even more calories than running. It's difficult to walk really fast--It's not something we were designed for.

Recently learned about Cunningham's law: "The best way to get the right answer on the internet is not to ask a question, it's to post the wrong answer." http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cunningham's_Law

Annual fee is $95 and you get unlimited 45 minute rides. A 24 hour pass is $10 and a one week pass is $25 but only give you 30 minute rides.

This leaves out a really important step: *the second proofing.* You need to the dough rise after you fold it and shape into a loaf (called a boule) for at least 60 minutes to 2 hours. Otherwise your bread is going to be dense and shaped like a hockey puck and without the amazing big gas bubbles in the crumb. The easiest…

Well done, man! You look fantastic. This really inspires me as I weighed around 260 a year ago. I've dropped around 30 since then (mostly from just quitting booze) but a month ago I decided to get serious, set a specific goal, track workouts and log all my food intake. So far so good. Your post helps to make reaching my…

No way Lebron could seriously compete at top level on a low carb diet. He would have very limited endurance without the carbs to produce enough glycogen. But the season doesn't start until October. As soon as he starts eating the necessary carbs again the weight will come back quickly and he'll have lose the weight (or…

Hard liquor, beer and wine all have boatloads of calories, of course. A single gin and tonic is 143 calories. 210 calories in a pint of Guinness. Wine is similar.

This pictures are amazing and some are almost beyond belief. What really strikes me is not so much that everyone's face is thinner, but how big and beautiful people's eyes look in comparison.
