Agreed, jenmek. I recently watched a video on this very subject. Can't remember the name of the person, but they were saying that sugar is sugar, no matter if it's derived from a natural source or processed. The body treats it the same and this can add pounds if not monitored. It's a daily struggle for me, but one that I…

I hear ya! Didn't have the cigarette thing, but nearly everything I did involved food. Guess it's connected to our family's heritage. Being Italo-American, every occasion involves massive quantities of food. Talk about conditioning someone into becoming an emotional eater!!! Let's not talk about how we're feeling, let's…

Amen! I have never given up sugar on my journey here. Moderation is a difficult thing to master; however, I am never giving up! : ) Thanks for your post. Can relate!

Hi Evan and welcome! Here you'll find the support you'll need if you join groups like these and continue to be active with friends and in communities. I've been an emotional eater since I was a small child (that's a LONG time!). It's horrible and yes, it can ruin your life. BUT (and this is a big "but" - no pun intended!)…

judis100, thanks for the pot of tea tip. I love a cup of tea in the afternoon, and after dinner. My mind has to reset the thoughts that I have to have something sweet to go with that delicious cup of tea!

fruitydelicious, feel free to add me as a friend. <3 You're back and THAT'S what matters! We all hit bumps in the road on our journey. It's life-long, this eating healthier, etc. So, we chalk it up to a "bump" and move on. Remember: we are not defined by the # on the scale. We are wonderfully made! <3

Love reading everyone's posts here. Inspiring, insightful, and "food for thought" for this old lady. High winds, cold rain = not going back outside today. Froze just going to get the mail and a coffee. Since I'm in for the rest of the day, thinking I'll tackle something I've been successfully putting off for months now.…

I'll be 56 in April and have been an MFP'er for over two years. I've lost over 100 lbs. (took about 18 -24 mos.) and have maintained most of my weight loss. The holidays were my downfall this year. BUT I'm getting back on track slowly but surely. In the past (when I was much younger), weight would come off faster, but it…

Here are a few of my favorite dishes/sides: Cabbage and carrots with Portuguese Chicken Chourico Mini Ground Chicken Meatloaves Roasted Cauliflower & Onion Kugel Today's latest: Spiralized zucchini with Baby Bella Mushrooms, garlic, and a pinch of crushed red pepper.

A) Not obsessing over the scale - I weigh in no more than once a month. My emotional health seemed to be tied to the number on the scale for much of my life. No more! B) Not having any taboo foods. - This was major gor me because in the past, I'd cut out carbs, fats, desserts, snacks, etc. and feel so deprived. This would…

One day at a time. Baby steps in changing your behaviors. I've lost over 100 lbs., but I did it slowly (almost two years). Still losing. I think it's a lifelong story about small changes, working towards your goals. Welcome! Feel free to add me as a friend.

Hi minyetta1. I too have problems with emotional eating after dinner and before bed. Please feel free to add me as an MFP friend.

Hi there. Totally get what you are saying. 2+ years ago I decided that I needed to get healthier. BUT, the journey has been an uphill battle all the way. I take baby steps to eating healthier, exercising more, and working on finding healthier ways to deal with my emotions/stress. I've learned that if I choose to have…

Hi helenbeee. Please feel free to add me as a friend. Together we are strong. Been an MFPer since August 2014. Lost over 100 lbs., but I'm still an emotional eater - dealing with the issue of finding healthier ways to manage/deal with life issues. Peace.

When I feel like I'm hungry and/or gonna overeat from stress (especially happens at night for me), I grab a string cheese (sometimes 2) and slowly peel it apart to eat it. Delicious, protein, calcium, satisfying and usually works to quell my "hunger". You mentioned taking another break from your bf. Maybe there's a need to…

Hi there - would be glad to be friends with all of you! Feel free to add me. I've been on MFP since August of 2014 and have lost over 100 lbs. The stress for me is keeping it off and losing more weight. Since the beginning of the month, I've been working on recommitting to my original goal: to be healthier. That said, I'm…

Loved reading through many of these posts. Here are a few of my own: - never realized that I might not need asthma inhalers after losing over 100lbs. Still look for the largest sizes to try on in the store; AND I'm pleasantly surprised when something is too big. Can walk and stand for longer periods of time and exercise…

Thanks, Gamliela. I've never seen the OA groups on here. Will try to find them. : )

I've lost around 140 lbs. and would be happy to give and receive the support that is found in many of the posts here! Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. Judis100, I tried OA many years ago, but wasn't a fan. Maybe it was that particular group - don't know. Maybe it's worth giving it another try somewhere else. I do know (have named) issues that send me into a downward spin with trying to eat healthy. Things like: financial stress - I am totally…

Please don't stress out over a general guideline of 10K steps. This is meant as a motivator for some people to get moving. If, however, you're doing what you need to do to make yourself more physically fit, then by all means, pat yourself on the back and let go of these numbers. It's a similar situation with those who…

I use all types of add-ins. After all, "variety is the spice of life!". Some of my favs: plain Kefir with ground flax seeds, frozen unsweetened blueberries or black cherries, and cinnamon. YUM! I just read about a restaurant in NYC that specializes in all types of oatmeal flavors. Some of the owners versions are savory…

Some really great tips here. :) Several of the mentioned tricks have worked for me, including: brushing, flossing & using mouthwash before I sit down to watch TV. The directions on the mouthwash bottle say not to eat or drink anything for 30 mins. after using it. After that amt. of time, my cravings have usually subsided…

Absolutely worth it! I bought one back in the Fall and haven't regretted doing so. Although I don't measure everything (i.e., lettuces, green beans, and the like), it comes in handy to control my protein and starch portions. After awhile, I've become a little confident in being able to eyeball amounts; however, I still use…

God love you, Lucille! I've never been someone who eats just to live. I've always lived to eat! I have learned that in order to enjoy more of the goodness of Christmas (dishes we only make once a year), I have to move more. Plain and simple for me: if I don't move I won't get to indulge in something everyone else is…

There are some great answers here! I was a Personal Chef, so I have a little leg up on the guessing game that is eating out. However, I still ask my server about how things are prepared. I get salad dressings on the side (or opt for a lower cal/fat version); cheese, bacon, candied nuts, croutons, & any high-sugar/fat/cals…

Hi Santoshi! Welcome to MFP. Yes, 50 lbs. is a very reasonable goal. If I may suggest that you might want to approach that 50 lbs. as a major goal and celebrate smaller losses (say every 5 or 10 lbs. lost)? That's what's worked for me and I think it made my 100+ lbs to lose seem more achievable. Best of luck! Hope to see…

I've noticed that if I don't come pretty close to or meet my protein goals for the day, I'm hungrier. Also, if I do have a sweet treat or more carbs than usual, I crave more food for a day or two. The only way I've found to curb my appetite is to eat healthy and eat snacks that are filling, yet aren't heavily laden with…

Hi there - I've been with MFP since last August. Love my MFP friends and family! Looking forward to chatting with you all. One of my April goals was to stay on track in spite of my birthday (done and done!) My May goals: hit the 100 lbs. lost mark (done!) Stay committed to moving more - a work in progress! Finish painting…

My schedule is flexible and I am not one to have a strict regimen of diet and exercise. I stay within my calorie goals for the day and I move more than I used to. Seems to work (100 lbs. lost and counting). I get up after a good 7 to 8 hrs of sleep. I've found this amount of sleep is the best for me to feel well-rested. I…
