  • I'm actually better with straws too! I have a hard time burping, and when I do it's a little at a time. It's quite uncomfortable until the pressure goes away. I often say "I just wish I could down a coke and BELCH" lol
  • Pittsburgh, PA :)
  • I was able to take 4 weeks off due to short term disability. Physically, I could have gone back after a week with pretty minor discomfort. I don't have a very physical job though. The best thing about the time off was having the time to really adjust to my new diet and way of eating. It would have been a lot harder to go…
  • Call the Doctor! I feel for you - those sudden movements that first week home were really unpleasant. You could have pulled a stich or something - better to check it out than to let it heal incorrectly. Hope you're feeling better soon!
  • Just a word of warning...the side effect of dumping when eating sweets and fats DOES NOT affect everyone! I am only saying that because I was also very excited about that side effect prior to surgery. As a "sugar-addict" I thought that the surgery would make it impossible for me to eat that junk. Not so - seven months post…
  • I had RNY and I had a drain on my right side for the first week I was home. I'm a side sleeper. The first day I was pretty knocked out and slept sitting in a recliner. Then I slept in the bed the rest of the time. I slept on my left side (opposite my drain), and put a smaller pillow behind my lower back to support it. I…

  • You don't say how far out you are. But I am 7 months out from surgery, and I also seem to be able to eat whatever I want. I can't eat the same large quantities, but I can graze all day on sweets (unfortunately I've tried and know this for sure) with no ill-effects. My appetite has also returned, and if I'm not careful I…
  • Hard to say. My PCP was involved in my decision from the get go. She wanted copies of all tests etc. sent to her during the process. Of course, I know not all PCP's are that involved, but I see her as the primary coordinator of my total health picture. It surprises me that your almost done with all your prep and your PCP…
  • Find another outlet for stress. :) I will say at a little over 6 months out though, my appetite has returned somewhat and I can consume sweets seemingly with no problems (no where near what I used to but I can still do it). So use this time early on to find that hobby or activity that is NOT food oriented to de-stress,…
  • You are so inspirational...and you look great! :)

  • I don't think there's a way around it...if you are logging your food, you log EVERYTHING that goes into your mouth. If I can't measure it or weigh it, I don't eat it, with the exception of things that are truly zero calories. All those little spoonfuls here and there add up. For me at least, this would be a very dangerous…
  • Right after surgery, there is a alot of swelling and fluid buildup, especially from the IV's and painkillers. I'd think it's just your body flushing all that out. It does sound like alot (mine was around 10lbs), but everyone is different. If you aren't having any other symptoms of complications I wouldn't worry about it…
  • Congratulations!

  • Divalicious feel free to add me. I had my RNY at the end of October. I haven't had many issues, except a few meats that didn't agree with me, probably due to eating too fast or too big bites at a time. Did your Dr tell you any reasons? I hope he/she checked to make sure there's no surgical complication. If there isn't,…
  • Don;t know about the MI insurance, I had insurance through my employer that covered it. I'd start with your PCP to get them onboard (because insurance will most certainly require a letter from them in addition to any other pre-surgery requirement), then find a Bariatric Center of Excellence near you and go to a free info…
  • Also I forgot to mention that the elliptical is notoriously inaccurate as far as inflating calorie burn. If you're doing that all the time, your body might have adjusted to it and become more efficient. Maybe try a different exercise to jump start your loss for a bit? Are you doing strength training (weights)? I haven't…
  • I agree as well. I keep my calories around 800 -1000 for now (6 months out), and once in awhile I eat a bit over. The last two days I actually averaged around 1350. Got on the scale today and moved 3 lbs down! This has happened a couple times. I don't have the experience and practice yet to explain it scientifically, but I…
  • I said, "Dr., I'm really concerned about my weight. I've tried X, Y, and Z, and haven't gotten results". If you are already developing co-morbidities such as apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc, your Dr probably discussed weight with you at some point anyway. Don't be embarrassed to bring up weight. I looked at it as…
  • Agree! That stuff got me through this horrible winter. I put a little sugar free Kahlua flavored syrup in it and mix that first - seemed to make it dissolve in the hot water better.
  • You choose your own privacy settings and friends on MFP. You can choose not to share your diary at all, or only share it with your friends if you like. Why should you have to explain anything? If someone on your friends list is making rude comments or being intrusive, YOU get to decide when to use the DELETE button. :)
  • No, it is NOT out of your hands. You were not specific about how you did not follow the diet, but a big part of the liquid diet is intended to make sure your digestive system is empty prior to the surgeon working on it. You didn't specify your surgery, but I would imagine this is really important for RNY. However, I think…
  • You tube is a great resource! You can also find weight training apps if you have a smart phone. I've been reading a lot lately about the elliptical and how it may not be the best machine, the burned calories are notoriously exaggerated. Worse than that, the motion it forces you into may not be best for knees and other…
  • Awesome! Whatever arrangement you can make to give yourself the most time off is what I'd suggest. Even if it's a matter of days, it will make a difference. Things you don't think of might be painful those first couple days (like getting in and out of chairs, cars, etc). I was amazed by how much better I felt day to day. I…
  • Yes! I am almost 6 months too and I definitely am having to "work" more to avoid the cravings and having my daily calories creep up. Yesterday I ate almost 1500, and didn't feel so much as a groan from my pouch. Just a reminder that my honeymoon phase might be ending. :) Going to exercise a bit longer today to make up for…
  • Yes it's normal. I only lost 4 lbs at my one month checkup! Talk about disappointment. :) Now at almost 6 months I am right on track. It seems that water for me really affects the weight loss. Make sure you're getting all of it in. If I go a day or two short on liquids, the scale starts to creep up due to retention. I…

  • I'm almost 6 months out from RNY. Feel free to add me :) As far as questions, I can't remember having too many. One good tip I got after my surgery way to buy a set of baby spoons. They really helped with keeping bites small once I was off liquids and onto pureed.
  • Someone on here made a comment once that being overweight is very public, and people think they have the right (or responsibility in some cases) to "help" you with your struggle. It's so true. I'm sure she's well-meaning, but if she's a friend, and her comment bothers you - then you have to decide if it's worth addressing…
  • Recognizing you've gotten off track is the first step to getting back on! Quitting smoking is huge, and you should be proud of doing that. Just shows that you DO have the willpower to make a lifestyle change once you set your mind to it. Use this as a "reset" opportunity. :)
  • I had to have a PCP letter as well. It will depend on your insurance and your surgical teams requirements. You should discuss this with your surgeon early on. For my insurance, I had to show a history of being overweight and list everything I'd done to try to lose it. I also had to provide documentation of co-morbidities…
