Warm soups and herbal teas this time of year is an excellent idea! Also, for me anyway, warm or room temperature liquids seem to go down easier.

Hi Janie, I had my RNY on October 28th and I still do not eat any bread/crackers/etc. I was told it would be several months before I would be cleared for bread. Every surgeon is different, but I think you would still be in the pureed food stage, or just barely out of it heading into soft foods. PROTEIN. You have to focus…

I'm the one that had the surgery, but my husband was very worried about "knowing what to do" when I came home. He was with me through the whole pre-op process, but about a week before he kind of freaked out. I agree with the suggestion that you need to know his diet restrictions, especially if you do the majority of food…

I did GB because for me, if it was just a matter of watching what I eat and portions, I wouldn't need surgery at all. I've been dieting all my life, manage to lose it, then slowly gain it back (and more) for one reason or another. I needed to do something drastic, and something that could not be reversed. I didn't want the…

Not sure...I'm trying to follow the advice NOT to compare my results to others, especially early on. I do think the liquid intake is more key than I realized because after I posted this I looked back through my diary and realized I was not being as consistent as I thought about my liquids or my exercise. I'm not going to…

Welcome! And good luck with your surgery! :)

Everything everyone else said, but I'd add that I wish I had practiced "sipping" throughout the day, and taking smaller bites before surgery. It was hardest to get used to not gulping water (after surgery if you still have that habit it can be really uncomfortable). Especially if you're at the end of your day and realize…

Great point! Even though I was following the diet, I really think I was overestimating how much exercise I was getting. I rejoined my gym and have been going six days. I've also really been watching my water and making sure I get that 64oz or more EVERY day. I'm down about 8 lbs over the past two weeks. I did gain 10 lbs…

I posted a similar post a couple weeks ago. It's so frustrating! Looking through my food journal I noticed that I had not consistently hit my 64 oz water goal, so I started working on that and it seemed to help me. Also, I've been to the gym six days a week doing intervals on the treadmill. I'll add weights next week. I…

RNY...thanks for the encouragement. I guess I have to stick to the plan and be patient! :)

Walk as much as you can, it really does help with the gas. The first two days my husband had to help me out of bed (ours is low to the floor) and recliner chairs, but by the third day I didn't need any assistance at all. You'll be amazed how quickly you seem to heal from day to day, remember you're healing internally too…

Nice! My 1 month check up is next week...then back to work! Hope my results are as good as yours. :)

Last Supper Syndrome...I had it too. :) As soon as I hit that last 6 month nutrition class and found out my insurance was a "go, I lost most of my willpower temporarily. I think I actually gained a few pounds! Then, I had only clear liquids for one week prior to surgery. I lost about 10 pounds from that. The second or…

I'm still in my soft foods phase too (two weeks post GB) and was wondering about this myself. I am averaging between 400-700 calories a day. I got the same advice as far as 3 meals, small snack if I want one (not really). I just ignore the MFP warning at the end of the day. I have it set on 1100 calories, but for now I…

Inspiring! :) Funny, most of those are on my weight-loss bucket list too!

My goodness that is disappointing! I admire how you're keeping positive though. It will give you that much more time to change your eating habits so when you do have it next year you'll have that much more success!

Nice to meet you Debby! My surgery is scheduled for 10/28. Hope everything goes well for you. Love seeing everyone's progress on here...so motivating!

I've never heard of such a thing. Mine was pretty much a conversation to make sure I was competent enough to understand the surgery and dietary instructions. We talked about my plans for the future, my support system, etc. It was actually one of the more pleasant pre-tests, lol. Hopefully you can request a second opinion…

Hi Crystal...I just finished my 6 month diet, still have some testing to get finished before my info goes to insurance and hopefully I will get a date set for surgery before the end of the year. I still have moments of doubt because it is really a serious surgery and a lifetime commitment to be successful. It's a bit…

Sounds very toxic, and seems to go much deeper than you could ever discuss here. Mothers can be difficult. They're human, and they have their own hang ups. You're an adult. You've already achieved a lot in your life, despite the negativity you seem to get from your family. Time to stop worrying about affirmation you may…

Good luck to you!

Everyone's goals are different, maybe for them, ANY physical activity is an improvement. Personally, I can't read while on a treadmill or bike, but I really don't care if others do.

Ugh, just ignore it. Ignore rude responses to your questions, and those of you who are so much more experienced and bothered by answering the same questions over and over again...just ignore the questions. Common sense y'all...

Again, we don't know the dynamics of the OP's family, how they communicate with each other, or his relationship with this particular family member. When you are referring to someone else's weight or health (or any personal issue) you have to be aware that you may illicit an extreme response.
-
She made a pointed comment, she got a pointed response. Although it probably would have been more diplomatic to point out how hard you've been working and that it hasn't been easy. Then again, no one here knows the context of your relationship with this family member, or your family dynamic in general. If it made you feel…

Gonna agree with the cold turkey approach. Plan your next several days of meals so you don't get caught looking for quick things to eat. High proteins and complex carbs to fill you up. Find some fruit you enjoy and snack on it between meals. Drink lots of water. I find it best to avoid artificial sweeteners as well, for me…

Parents who either don't know any better, or don't care; school systems that cut funding for health, physical education, and sports programs, doctors that are afraid to "insult" a patient by telling them the truth, the food industry for filling our foods with bio-altering chemicals and super-concentrated sugars, and the…

I think it's got to be food. When I am eating right I feel much more energy, which translates into more exercise for me.

Just get out and walk. Start slow, and set an attainable goal. Eventually you'll pass your landmarks (or mile markers, or pedometer steps) and set a new goal. You'll feel a difference in yourself, things will get easier. Your goals will get more challenging because your confidence will be building. After you're…

I live in Pittsburgh. Depending on your tastes, there are a lot of potentially healthy local restaurant options right across the river from the Consol in the Southside. There is Kassab's (Middle Eastern), Nakama or Little Tokyo Bistro (Japanese), Thai Me Up (obviously Thai), the Double Wide Grill (good vegetarian/vegan…
