The only one you should be competing against is yourself. Rowing is a serious workout. I've just recently been able to do an hour straight averaging +/-11,500 meters in that time. Only one I judge myself against is me. I'm sure over time we all improve.

For me, I use the pads sold by C2 - I just stack 2 of them together. Still not a totally cushy feeling, but I can certainly manage 60-70 minutes without it hurting me. All personal experience though.

A Concept2 rowing machine is an all out amazing low impact cardio option. I tried jogging/running and was not appealing. A couple / few days spent on focusing on proper form and it's an amazing full body workout.
