Is there a reason you mus ALWAYS capitilize PALEO?

I am paleo/p[rimal and eat white rice, it does provide a specific nutrient...starch. Yes, you can get starch from potato or green plantain, but rice is easy. I NEED starch specifically and not just carbs because it does help with thyroid function. I don't do as well with the same number of carbs coming from fruit as I do…

One of hte best pizza crust recipes. It is high in carbs, but for a change of pace from other things it is worth it. http://thedomesticman.com/2012/12/13/cast-iron-skillet-grain-and-gluten-free-pizza/

I have not tried this recipe for Carolina style BBQ sauce, which is mustard based, but the ingredients look like "winners". It does have honey, but I personally don't feel that sugar is evil as long as it is in moderation. http://honestlydelicious.blogspot.com/2013/06/paleo-carolina-gold-bbq-sauce.html Here's another one.…

I should mention tha tyou can make hte "slop" or "hamburger helper" without the rice and cook rice on the side for the family to help bulk up the meal and stretch the budget. It is great over cauliflower...either riced or just steamed. That way you get two veggie servings, one in the meat itself (zuchinni works well) and…

I have been follwoing the paleo template since August 2009, so a long time. We eat mostly simple meals, I cook meat and veggies and then add things for htenon-paleo fmaily members if needed. I do eat both white potatoes and rice a few times a week, so that makes meal choices easier. On work days I almost always just…

I natuarlly eat around 1300-1500 calories eating this way, so depending on your hunger level you should be okay. Some people will under eat so be careful not to fall into that trap.

Does the docotr want you to count calories or track calories? There is a difference. I log to see what range I am eating to know if i need to make adjustments. I don't "count" so that I eat only "x" number of calories. A lot of times doctors or dietitians want you to "track" what you are eating to get a picture of how you…

I did! I was 220 for only a few months. I was diagnosed with hypothyroid and lost about 10 pounds when they started the mediciation. I stayed at that weight for two years, then I finally found the way of eating that worked for me and I lost the last bit in about 6 months (40-45 pounds). I don't have pics to share on here…

What I have noticed is there is an epidemic on the internet of poor reading comprehension. People read what they want to and make their judgement based on their assumptions. You just can't reason with them or use logic, so I stopped trying.

If you scroll down to the area that discussing how they determined a healthy diet, it mentions nothing about fat. The take home message was, "Eat more fruits and vegetables." And…

When you actually look at the link and read it, hte idea is that a poor diet in general leads to depression. It isn't fats fault, but that is where theypoint the finger. Crap food is the issue, period. When will poeple get that?

Yes! This..lol

I like hte Lee Kum Kee sriracha.

THe IIFYM people drive me nuts because that just simply didn't work for me. When I explain why I am always told that I am either lying about my logging, I didn't do it right or I was not exercising as much as I said I exercised. I was on a very strict program and my career depended on me losing weight. I wasn't flubbing…

Ultimately "paleo" means avoid things that your body doesn't hnadle well. If dairy gives you gas or makes you sick then it isn't a part of your paleo template. If you can eat dairy and your body doesn't have anegative reaction then you can eat dairy. It is as simple as that. This is where something like a Whole 30 comes in…

You can eat it because paleo is not a "low carb" diet by definition. If you decided to eat some ice cream today you would still be much lower carb than most Americans. And you could still fall into the "low carb" category while eating ice cream. This isn't all or nothing. Some people can't/won't/don't eat ice cream and…

My favorite "anti-paleo" argument is always the lifespan/expectancy thing. Yeah, human life expectancy JUMPED not at the introduction of grains but at the point where we began to understand germs and how to prevent infection. It then increased dramtically in the early 1900s with the dawn of antibiotics. The increased life…

Why?!?! WHy did I go read that thread. It makes my brain hurt.

I went two years...two years! KNowing the right answer and getting the run around from my doctor. My T4 was on the very low end of normal, but because my TSH was "hyperthyroid" they kept saying it was okay. FInally I got them to retest my T3 which was also very low. Well shoot, of course it was! As a person medicated for…

Iodized salt isn't the best way to get iodine. The soy itself can be a problem if you're eating too much. One tablespoon or properly fermented (wheat free) soy is probably safe, more than that can be too much. Soy in general isn't a great food for a person with thyroid disease. You could try replacing it with coconut…

All good points. If you have hashimoto's than too much iodine can be a problem. With the TSH low carb will increase it, but too low carb will cause the T4 (which is what triggers the pituatary to produce TSH) to increase, but can also cause a problem with the body converting T4 to usable T3. Instead it will convert the T4…

Iron and calcium supplements too. I just take them at night instead.

SO, I am late to the party on this one. Did you know that there is a connection between gluten intolerance and hyporthyroidism? I think this is why I did so well with paleo for weight loss. If it comes up again, just talk about that with her. Tell her right now it is an experiment but you don't want to mess it up by eating…

Yes, ketosis can lead to a difficulty converting T4 to T3. Your labs will look "okay" as far as TSH and T4 go, but you'll feel like junk and stall wieght loss because your T3 is low.

Have you considered that less calories = more weight, because you're not eating enough? People with hypothyroidism tend to think they need to reduce calories a lot to lose weight and at first it seems to work anf then it backfires and they end up like you. Seriously, you NEED to let go of the scale for a month or two or…
-
SInce you mentioned thyroid in your other post, I will second that you should add white rice and maybe even white potatoes. Women with hypothtyroidism need to maintain a little above ketosis to ensure proper thyroid function. If I go below 75 grams then I will not lose weight very easily.

I went straight from 1000-1200 calories a day before paleo to 1800-2400 a day and lost 10 pounds in the first month. Right now i am pretty sedentary and I can still eat more than you are eating a lose weight. Have you calculated your BMR and TDEE? If not you should. Then try eating at the midline of that calculation for a…
