This. Sorry. I don't buy that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. I've been counting calories for two years and when I cut down on my carbs and eat the same, I lose more weight
-
I have been doing a Whole30 for 18 days. It sucks. Rides suck, running sucks. The diet is just stupid, and I don't find any validity to their claims. (you can eat white potatoes but you can't eat beans) But, I've lost 7 pounds in those 18 days, which is a nice loss for me on about 1700 calories a day. I was eating closer…

My overall trend is down, but because of these fluctuations, I get frustrated and tend not to stay on track, which means I'm losing just a couple/few pounds a month, when I'd prefer more progress.
-
Thanks for all the responses! I'm going to closely keep in line with a cal amount for a month and see what happens. I started a boot camp and I think it may be to blame!
-
Thank you BarbieAS, my point exactly!
-
ok - permanent as in six years. But my point is that it didn't correct itself after a few months or years

The study shows that their metabolism is PERMANENTLY altered. They didn't study regular dieters, but the implication is that any type of diet screws with your metabolism. I know a lot of folks (myself included) struggle to lose weight on my TDEE based on MFP calculations.
-
Hmmm. So maybe it did.

I think that this poster is not average..... at least I hope he's not! :)
-
All great and inspirational ideas!

So what is this "high volume" way? Just a lot more veggies?
-
I'd rather have a consistent daily calorie target. If I think I can eat more on exercise days, I will. So, I set my target of 1 lb a week, and hope to burn off more through exercise

Thanks, but I meant specifically about building muscle and whether it would impact calorie burn
-
Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Bandolino brand - mandie style. Found mine at Steinmart. Also, Macy's has a few types of jeans that have worked for me. Good luck.

I'm 5'7" and 208 and my goal is 160 - i'd be soo happy if I got to 160. Like others here, I carry a lot of my weight in my legs and don't look like I weigh as much as I do. I haven't been 160 in years (like 20) but got to 180 a few years ago and was pretty happy there, but knew I could lose at least 20 more.
-
oooh. I think I can do this. thanks!

I am planning on keeping cutting calories and doing my cardio - I'm wondering whether and how much weight training I should add and if it would make a difference (full disclosure, not a big fan of the weights, it's soooo boring :)
-
Thanks Scolaris and RobertW. Glad to know I'm not crazy. Hangry is definitely how I am the day after an intense workout. Between that and water retention because of muscle soreness I just feel that it might undermine weight-loss
-
Thanks bwogilvie - I suspected my HR monitor was not accurate, I tried to set it correctly, but the tests fail. I always eat good protein and carb snack after a ride (often a pb&j sandwich) but I will try to eat something mid ride next time I go beyond about 90 min. And it also sounds like maybe I should notch down the…

I don't eat back a large part of the calories, maybe 1/3.... A snack after an hour is not a bad idea...
-
hmm. I just realized perhaps I mis-titled the post. I am not relying on exercise for weight loss. I'm keeping in a calorie deficit - aiming for about 1500 calories a day, whether I exercise or not. I love exercising, specifically riding my bike, and it keeps me motivated and on track and I'm training to improve my speed…
-
I'm not trying to exercise and not watch my intake. What I'm asking is if it's easier not to overeat and watch your calories if you're not working out intensely.

Thanks all very much. Some good things to keep in mind. I am logging and weighing food religiously - though honestly for today I'm calling it quits and starting again tomorrow. I will just sit tight and wait for another week or so :)
-
I'm a little concerned about cutting calories further- I'm getting fatigued/sometimes dizzy right now. I work out intensely most days - 80-90 % of my max HR for an hour I just had my blood work done and it was excellent
-
So then how should you calculate calorie burn?
-
I wear a heart monitor to estimate calorie burn when I work out
-
thanks KatieBean... I don't drink to hangover levels - just one or two glasses of wine -- but this certainly makes a lot of sense. Good to know!
