hysterectomy and weight loss
Hi all, Dr. has recommended partial hysterectomy for fibroids in next few months. I am ready because of pressure of fibroids on my bladders and intestines, and general discomfort. I am wondering how a partial hysterectomy has effected my fellow "hystersisters" weight loss. Please share your stories, most of what I've found…

Obesity Journal study: It's not just CICO
New York Times story details that a study of Biggest Loser contestants found they regained much of the weight they lost and ruined their metabolism -- all had metabolisms that burned much less than a person their weight should have been burning. So, OK, it is CICO, but if you're overweight and trying to lose weight, it may…

A 'whoosh' and then gain
This happens almost every single month - I'll have a whoosh and lose three or four pounds, and then the next day, I will gain it all back plus more. A few weeks later, the weight will go back down to that previous low, and then I'll lose a couple more pounds, but the next day, back up again. It seems to happen more…

Is spinning good for weight loss?
I just went to my second spinning class, and I really like it. BUT, i've seen several websites and "stories" that spinning isn't good for weight loss. Any success stories or results that anyone can share??

Is getting your RMR clinically tested worth it?
Has anyone had their resting metabolic rate tested? I seem stalled after upping my exercise and weighing my food - I'm wondering if this could help. It's $150. I've played around with my calories and going lower, between 1200 and 1800, and nothing seems to help. I feel like if I did the RMR it's one thing I can rule out if…

Down 3.4 pounds after switching exercise?
Hi all. I have been dieting for more than 2 months and averaging a loss of about 5 lbs a month- even though accd to my Tdee deficit I should have been losing more. Two weeks ago I started a boot camp class and this week- in one week- I'm down 3.4 lbs. I am doing nothing differently than this. accd to my heart rate monitor,…

Weight loss success on Keto, Paleo or Whole30
Hi all, I'm thinking about doing a Whole30 challenge, but wanted to know from experienced folks here how much different the program is from cutting out sugars and processed food in terms of weight loss. I know that cutting out sugars, white flour, alcohol helps me not binge and overeat, but I am not eager to give up my…

One tweak or change that helped
Is there one thing that you did that made a difference: in how much weight you lost, how you felt in general, your hunger level, etc?? For me, giving up alcohol really helps me keep at my calorie goal. I also am trying to move to more "whole foods" because I'm realizing that I don't feel as good as I could eating processed…

Ack! help. 46% body fat.
I had a serious dexa body scan done yesterday as part of a bone density study, and it pegged my body fat at an average of 46%. (i'm at the 82nd percentile for my age. yikes) I know I have to lose more weight (I'm 208), and I am working to do so, eating 1500-1600 calories a day, and burning about 600 calories a day through…

Moderate vs. intense exercise for weight loss
Which is best for weight loss (and I'm not talking about that so-called mythical 'fat-burning' zone)? I have been working out intensely - at about 90 percent of my max heart rate for the last three weeks. This results in some soreness and in my being famished afterward. But my fitness is really improving. The scale, so…

Good forums for biking/cyclists?
Hi all, I'm a little off topic here, but can any bicyclists recommend any good forms just for bicycling? I've found a a couple at cyclingforums.com, bicycling.com and bikeradar.com, but all seem largely geared toward long-time serious bikers. Any suggestions for someone fairly new? Thanks.

What's happening here?
I have my own theory, but I'd like to hear some other opinions about why I might be gaining weight. I previously lost about 40 pounds, and have been off the wagon since last June. While I have been exercising, I have not been watching what I eat and gained back 15 since then. About two weeks ago, I started counting…

Biking/doing the same exercise every day??
Hi all - hoping to get some good responses here. I know there are posts about doing the same exercise every day, and that it's generally not a good idea because your body gets used to it. I love to bike, and do it every day if I could. Nothing else is quite as enjoyable or gives me the same calorie burn. But, is there…

Alcohol and weight loss...
Does anyone else find when the drink alcohol they are generally more hungry the next day and eat more? I have given up alcohol for Lent, and as in the past, I'm finding when I'm not drinking it's easier for me to control what I eat and eat in moderation - i'm not talking about eating while I'm drinking, I am talking about…

How careful are you?
Hi all, i'm doing an elimination diet to see if gluten might be the culprit to all kinds of issues that I've just kind of lived with. I cook at home and am focusing on lean proteins, cheese, veggies and fruits. Tonight I made a delicious cauliflower pizza. My question is how strict are you? Do you not eat nuts because they…

TDEE is 2320 - 1000 cals = 2 lbs a week?
Hi all. I decided to calculate my TDEE based on the katch-mccardle (body fat) method on IIfym.com. I plugged in my info and exercise six times a week, which gives me a TDEE of 2320 -- so does this mean that in order to lose 2 lbs a week, I would have to cut my calories to 1320 a day when I'm exercising? That seems awful…

Can you wear down your running shoes in spin class?
Hi all, I have noticed that my 7 month old running shoes have lost a lot of their support recently -- i only run/jog about 10-12 miles a week. But i'm also spinning two to three times a week in the shoes. Can spinning class break down the support in running shoes??

Hey all, I'm having foot problems that are leading to problems in my legs, etc. I have bunions, flat feet, and on on and on. It's hindering my running. Do you go to a podiatrist for foot problems, or to an orthopedic specialist (surgeon?) thanks

Mystery weight loss, or the pushing through pays off?
So I'm a little concerned. I have lost 6 pounds in one week. I dropped 20 pounds without a problem in two months. But almost stalled in November (understandable) but nothing was coming off in January. I bumped up my exercise, still nothing. And then, in the last week I've dropped 6 pounds. Is this normal? trying to…

Spinning and running vs. other exercise
Hi all - I was wondering what everyone thought about exercise routines and their impact on weight loss. Right now I'm doing an interval running/walking program where I'm running about 5 min., walking 1 x 10 and working up to a 10k. Also doing spinning at least twice a week. I'm happy with this program, but I wonder if I…

Body fat measurements/questions
Why do body fat scales give you different readings depending on whether you say your a woman or man. I'm a woman, and as a woman, scale says I'm 42% body fat. As a man, it gives me a reading of 33%. WTF?? I was 48% in September, but have lost almost 30 pounds, which leads me to my second question, is there any standard…

Argghh. Can't find decent workout pants
I'm looking for light-weight capri pants for running/working out that aren't compression/tight. I'm way to big in the bottom and my legs to be wrapping them in black saran wrap... B12 as a weight loss tool?
Hi all, guessing this might start a heated discussion, but I can't find much info on this. I picked up some B12 a few months ago. I took a individual pills (5000 mcg that dissolve on your tongue) and meh, it didn't really do anything. But yesterday, after a tough workout, I was exhausted and took two B12 along with my…

Can exercise count as meditation??

I can't lose weight without serious exercise
Lots of people on MFP say they did better losing weight when they weren't working out intensely, just walking. But for me, if I don't exercise at least 40 minutes and get my heart rate up pretty high, I can't stick to my diet. The exercise helps me reduce my cravings and stress eating, and drinking (alcohol). Anyone else…

Dieting = depression?
Hi all -- I've been at this for 2 months, and I'm down 16 lbs. Lately, though, I've been in a funk in the mornings. Just kind of depressed, sometimes on the verge of crying, and blah. I get over it, usually, by exercising, or grabbing a handful of carbs (breakfast cereal). I'm typically fine in the afternoons/evenings. Has…

What one dietitian recommends
Putting this out there to inform and get your reaction. I joined a "biggest loser" group at my local gym, and we just had our first session with the dietitian. I found it interesting, as she didn't advocate a calorie counting regime (though she didn't oppose it). Instead, here's what she said - eat carbs only in the…

Calorie counts: HRM v. MFP
Considering buying an HRM to keep a closer track of my calories when I work out. But I'm curious for those of you who use HRMs, did you find that the calorie counts on MFP were way off base compared to your HRM, or were they relatively comparable?

Sore/injured hip , what kind of exercise?
Hi all, I did my squats improperly yesterday (apparently) because my hip and the muscle connected to the hip in the front of my leg. Not sure what kind of exercise I should do today that won't exacerbate it. Biking?? I think swimming would not work because of kicking, and jogging is definitely out... Thanks for your help!
