I have been loving overnight/refrigerator oatmeal, I make a different variation every morning, and am amazed at how long it keeps me full. Most of the recipes come in under or around 300 calories. Here's a link to a bunch of recipes: http://www.theyummylife.com/Refrigerator_Oatmeal This morning, I did the usual 1/4 cup…

Been there, been that guy, MANY times. To be honest, it never bothered me one way or the other...once the class gets started you shouldn't have the time to be focused on others around you.

It ain't the best, but Guinness is fairly light in calories. Most sites list around 155 for a 14.9 oz draught can, 125 for a 12 oz bottle. Any lower than that and you might as well drink water! Wow, take 45 seconds to look it up, and everyone beats me to it!

Sorry, just saw the "low impact" part of your post...do you have access to a pool? Swim! Biking and swimming are two of the best low impact options. I was also able to do treadmill work, as long as I kept the resistance low. Good luck! Catwoman??? :)

Is it the inside or outside of your knee? I just got done with three months of PT and slowly building my running back up after "overdoing it" and coming up (down? :) ) with a case of "runner's knee". Once that ligament was strained, it hurt to lean the wrong way or put any pressure on it. If it's the inside, that could be…

Since I hurt my knee by "overdoing it", I follow a routine established during physical therapy. I foam roll IT bands and quads for one minute each, do 6-7 dynamic stretches (about a minute each) then walk a couple of minutes to my "running start" spot. This walk has gotten progressivley shorter as I feel my stretching is…

Friend request sent! Most of my "friends" on here are either into running, beer or music - sometimes all three! Anyone else feel free to add me!

I absolutely agree, go for it! It's a great, fun experience, and a) based on your time, you will no way finish last and b) you will find out how supportive the running community is! I ran my first 5k this year and had three goals: 1) Finish 2) Not Finish Last 3) Not throw up - at least, not on my own shoes :) I ran 3 5k's,…

I love my iPhone 4, I don't have and haven't had any issues in almost two years. Longevity and reliability are important to me. OS upgrades and App compatibility as upgrades take place are also part of the positive experience I've had. I have zero complaints, and have taken my whole family down the Apple path with me -…

Hi priesr: I think you and I had corresponded a bit on the Nike sportband and their running apps, but I am looking at the Polar Wearlink+ which works with that sportband. It also works with the Nike Sportwatch. I think we had talked about both of those, so if you did buy either one, that HRM should work with them! Hope you…

Friend request sent! It seems my MFP friends are in three camps: Running, beer and/or music! Always happy to have fellow runners to keep up with! :) And in case anyone HASN'T seen it: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/689297-you-might-be-a-runner-if I see WAY too much of myself in lots of these posts. :)

@DMUND: If you have a foam roller and you love it, you're not doing it right. LOL! Just kidding, I have a serious love/hate relationship with mine. What is that saying, it hurts so good? :) Here is a link to some "dynamic stretches for runners" on Runners World.…

I'm working my way back to running after a bout with the dreaded runners knee. I'm in physical therapy now, and they are really emphasizing stretching. Everyone is different, and where and what you need to stretch may vary - I defer to Carson on everything running! - but my PT is emphasizing IT band, quad and calf…

I usually have wine 4-5 nights a week, and beer 1-2. I fit my calories into my day and count the wine, and make sure I work extra hard to allow for the calories if I need to. One of the things I like about MFP (and part of why I think it has worked for me) is that I don't have to DENY myself any foods I want. I just have…

I went through and am going through something similar. I didn't listen when my knees were a little sore, and tried to run through it. I haven't run in a month now and am in PT working through it. Did anything change in your routine? Route? Shoes? Length? Approach? In my case I added miles and changed shoes, either or both…

^^^^THIS I've become a convert!

I don't think so for pure GPS. I use the sportband with the sensor, I know you can also use the sensor with the app, but those can be had relatively cheap. You might also need a pouch to attach it to your running shoe. Or, just check out Endomondo, MapMyRun, Runkeeper or Runtastic. They're all free and can log distance,…

I used an AeroPress, and the way they have you brew coffee is to brew it strong and then add cold water to it. I discovered that (in addition to this making a smooth cup of coffee) it wasn't the bitterness or flavor that was hard for me to get by, it was the temperature. I started adding a splash of cold water to black…

Woot.

OK, so I see folks adding a lot of things to this, and this might be a dumb question but...why plain greek yogurt? Why not greek yogurt with fruit already in it? I love oatmeal so will definitely give this a try!

Great accomplishment and great time! You deserve to be proud!

Big Star: Holocaust "You're a sad eyed lie, you're a wasted face, you're a holocaust" In fact, Big Star 3rd. Most depressing uplifting album EVER. :) I also get a lump in the throat with Paul McCartney's Here Today, his tribute to John Lennon.

Great job, CONGRATULATIONS! I ran my first two 5k's last month, have another one scheduled in two weeks, and a pamphlet for a 10k the week after that is sitting in my laptop bag...I am just trying to make sure the weekend schedule is clear but if it is, I'm in!
-
Hi! So it sounds like you're running 5k now, but you want to run it quicker? I don't know if any of the programs do that, I've been looking into doing the same and it looks like maybe working intervals and tempo runs into your routines would be the next step. I'll check back to see if others recommend programs that help…

I agree with some of the posts, I am at 26.8 on the BMI scale, but don't even really WANT to lose much more. Body fat has been recommended as a better indicator of overall composition. I also think 1600 calories might be a little on the low side, especially if you're exercising that much more now!

I am 54 and didn't start running until last year, and just ran my first two 5k's! I went out and ran 5 miles yesterday "just because", so I guess I am hooked! Just tell your Mom to start slow, walk, then walk/jog/walk/jog, and gradually increase her jogs. Stress that she should be able to keep a conversation going as she…

Great post! You look fantastic, and I am so happy to see you share this info. I think I read more posts about eating more resulting in positive outcomes than any other topic on these boards. The key is moderation and exercise. I'm glad to have another success story to point my MFP friends to!
-
Several people have mentioned it, but pay attention to your pace. Conventional wisdom is that you should be able to actually maintain a conversation without being out of breath while starting running. I used to joke that people were walking and passing me (running!), but if that's the pace, so be it! Alternate walk/runs…

I just did my first one last weekend surpassed my best training time by coming in at 28:25. I still have no idea how I did that! When I run at lunch, I generally average around 33 minutes (and I blame that on these two back to back long hills, which I have a love/hate relationship with :)), so if you are averaging 30…
