  • There is no ideal cadence. The 180 comes from a misunderstanding of the Olympic study. The study found that most elites RACED faster than 180spm. If they were going for an easy run they would be under 180. The study was not meant to show that 180 was the "proper" rate, at least according to the author of the study. Your…
  • This is the site you want to go to if you want to read a thorough review of basically any activity tracker https://www.dcrainmaker.com/ Look under Product Reviews at the top to see his reviews of the Suunto watches
  • Here's what Jack Daniels wrote about that study on a LetsRun message board back in '07: Maybe I can clear a few thing up in this stride-rate and stride length discussion. First I need to emphasize the fact that what I have written relative to stride rate among elite runners (we tested 49 men and 30 women at the 84…
  • There is no ideal cadence for running, especially since it changes with pace.
  • Footstrike doesn't matter. As long as you don't overstride, your body will figure out the most efficient way to run. If you have to think about your form when you run, you're doing it wrong. Plenty of elites heel strike. There was a study done at the 2004 Sapporro International Half Marathon that analyzed the foot strike…
  • I train the same way, I run when I feel like it. The only kind of 'speedwork' I do is maybe a tempo run or two a month and maybe some mile repeats if I get the urge. Otherwise, I do all my other runs at a comfortable pace, sometimes comfortably fast sometimes comfortably slow, depends on what my body tells me to do. I…
  • Unless you're running well under 6 min pace, the difference is insignificant https://www.hillrunner.com/jim2/id110.html If you want to make a "correction", just bump up the speed a tad, that would better than running uphill the whole time. One of the things people don't seem to consider is that running on a treadmill makes…
  • @tomaattikastike Running is a pretty simple sport. Mileage and consistency is what gets you faster. You don't mention how often or how much you run.
  • I was at 34/66 before I got hurt playing tennis (separated shoulder, torn calf, pulled hamstring) a few years ago and got fat again. I'm currently trying to get back to that level before I get too old :p
  • The quickest way I've found to dry my shoes is to just stick them in front of a fan, heels first so the air can circulate inside the shoes easier. The more powerful your fan is the quicker they dry :)
  • You can search for marathons that fit your criteria here: http://www.findmymarathon.com/location.php For reviews of any marathons, I'd go here: http://www.marathonguide.com/
  • I agree 100%! My question to the OP is, WHY? You will be severely undertrained and you will suffer and that's if the race goes well. If you want to do it, then go ahead and do it, no one can stop you, but just be realistic about the outcome. I don't understand this 'bucket list' mentality of what seems to be most new…
  • Exactly^^ Don't worry about your cadence, it's not important. You body will determine what the proper cadence is. According to my Garmin, my cadence for my normal training run is around 170ish but when racing it gets into the mid 190's. I tried messing around with it for a few weeks just to see what would happen and while…

  • My Garmins have been short on 3 of 16 certified races. .01 short for a 5k, .03 for a 5 miler and .01 for a marathon. I'm not saying the courses were short, just the watch came up short.
  • If you're in the mid to back of the pack of a decent sized race, running the tangents is next to impossible since you'll have to cut people off constantly. It also seems to be these people that complain the most that a course is long according to their watch or phone. Since I am usually near the front or at the front,…
  • Here's a great website for reviews on Garmin watches: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/product-reviews/garmin. The reviews are pretty thorough. I had the 205 for about 2 1/2 yrs then upgraded to the 610 a little over a year ago.
  • So much misinformation, so little time. - First off, heatstroke/heat illness, whatever you call it, is not caused by dehydration. It’s caused by the environment you’re exercising in and the intensity of your exercise. Hydration DOES NOT play a part. - Less than half the weight you lose during exercise is due to water loss.…
  • They add .1% to the length of the course (1 meter for every 1K) after they measure it, called the 'short course prevention factor'. They measure about 1 foot from the curb and use the shortest route possible, but they don't measure across the sidewalk if the course is on the road. The route is measured on a bicycle using a…
  • I don't know who started the goofy incline myth, but I wish it would stop. Unless you're running sub 5:30 miles on the treadmill, keep it at 0, that simulates running on a flat surface outside: http://www.hillrunner.com/jim2/id110.html. Even if it someone was trying to "compensate for the lack of wind resistance", why…

  • Adding incline to the treadmill to 'simulate' wind resistance is one of the biggest myths on MFP. You leave the incline at 0 unless you're going over 11 mph since the wind resistance is insignificant at speeds slower than that. http://www.hillrunner.com/jim2/id110.html
  • Great accomplishment arc! Very impressive!
  • Thanks arc. The race is a little over 30 hrs away (6:15 am sunday). I drove the course earlier this evening. It's mostly run north/south with about 4 miles run east/west, which contains the only real hills. The main variable that I'm wondering about the most is the wind. The wind has been coming in from the NE while I've…

  • Hey, I'm Daryl, I'm currently living in Frankfort, Ky but originally from Louisville, Ky. I was a runner in HS and college, took a 10+ yr hiatus then began running again about 2 1/2 yrs ago. Ran off and on for about 2 yrs before I started to finally get serious about my running this summer, which happens to coincide when I…
