While I do burn more calories on the elliptical then I do on the treadmill, I find that my belly fat (which is my most stubborn spot) seems to be more affected when I do intervals on the treadmill vs intervals on the elliptical. Just a personal observation though...

I think it really depends on the person and where you are getting the pants from. I am 5'7 and 140 but I have no booty and no hips so I can fit into a 0/2 in most stores. In my jeans which are usually sevens, Citizens of Humanity, etc I am about a 28 on my way back down to my 27's.
