  • Yesterday - still working my way back into the pool - so this time 850m in 30/40 mins. I have to take it gently....doctor's orders. So it was a Big Deal for me to add getting back into the pool into my schedule last week. Er - I hope you don't mind my pointing this out, but it wasn't exactly the warmest welcome back to the…
  • This is really interesting - thanks everyone for sharing their stories. My perspective is that I found the first time on Mfp pretty easy - I lost my target 15lbs or so and got fitter too - back in 2011 over about 9 months. I have always eaten reasonably healthy, but I do like cake... And pudding. And wine. And chocolate.…
  • The people in the fast lane? Slow The people in the slow lane? Faster than me except when she does breaststroke. That has to be the slowest breaststroke going even if she does do that head under water thing.., The people in the 'splash chat and do a bit of swimming every 5 mins Derby and Joan lane'?: 'a real swimmer' (I…
  • Ps Curly - sorry to hear about your daughter. Yes I do, with mine. Hugs. Mssg me if you want...but sounds like you are doing all the right things! (And exercise is a key enemy of anxiety so it is good she is swimming even if that session went splat)
  • YES!!! First 'real' swim for over a year. Some of you will remember me - I'm cheering for the more modest swimmers in the group/reading the posts... Back in the day (!) a typical swim was a weekly 1k in 40/45 mins - lots of drills in that, across all 4 strokes. Occasionally more. No ambition for mega speed or distances -…
  • I have an ipod. But a) i struggle with a good ear plug fit b) i cant read the buttons with my glasses off... hey ho!
  • Sounds like the step count is right - but bear in mind that if you were doing all those steps at a really brisk rate (or carrying an even heaier load) you would use more calories up than if you are moving slowly. I walk my dog a lot - some days fast, and going up hills, other days slow slow. Step count could easily be…
  • A couple of thoughts - when I was on antidepressant medication that made me fuzzy, someone suggested I took the meds at night not in the morning. So simple and I felt a bit foolish when I realised what a difference that made to the fuzziness - the pills also helped me sleep that way. And they were a big help. Also - given…
  • Would swimming be any good? Or a snall dog - so you have to walk twice a day whatever, but there is something to take your attention if it is being painful?
  • Egg curry....(lentils, root veg, curry paste, ginger and hard boiled eggs...)
  • Mmm in my case about a slice of cake's worth a day.... Sadly the cake cravings continued long after the breast feeding stopped - i easily lost 'baby weight' whilst breast feeding but then gained afterwards. If you are hungry - i'd eat some more, within reason. (A weekly weigh in to keep an eye on things perhaps?) Producing…
  • Wow - does this thread make me glad I live in the uk, with our (generally pretty admirable) nhs. Fancy having to worry about which individual foots the bill for an ambulance. We do lots of things wrong over here - and I respect (and have lived in) the States - but this one we surely have right. I hope all concerned…
  • 6lbs lost in 8 weeks or so is not small - it is good progress, be pleased and proud - and it is probably better for you and more sustainable than going for a bigger figure Why not make the 3 'good' days a little easier - and dont aim for 'very under' - eat to your calorie allowance, treats included. You might find you are…
  • Regular vegetarian meals in my house: Egg and lentil curry (basically Patak's curry sauce plus extra ginger and onion, add smallish cubes of potato, carrot and eg sweet potatoes, red lentils - and water. Bubble away. Cook rice separately. Add hard boiled eggs at end to curry.) Veggie chilli - tons of recipes on line. I…
  • Mmm - British person alert. Not so many of us do the heavy flavoured creamer/coffee thing. And I second the voices that encourage you to try - er - coffee (!). It is a taste worth acquiring. We just buy good coffee beans/grounds and use a cafetière pot. Simple. Delicious. But as for teas. ... firstly please please don't…
  • It is helpful... helped me get over a period of painful ibs and if that ever happened again I would go back to it...
  • Ok I admit it. I feel a total fake posting.... (Some of you may remember me - I was swimming once or twice a week - 1k or so. Then about a year ago I got a dog and that stuffed my time/energy schedule and sadly swimming went out the window. BUT I am aiming to get back in the pool this autumn....so reading upon my favourite…
  • Gently cook with a lot of onion, slices of cooking apple and some sage - season and add a bit of yoghurt when it has all cooked down...
  • I cooked a fab (and also cheap and fish-stock friendly) meal the other day: Gently fried up Onions, courgettes, tomato, korma curry paste and put some defrosted frozen coley portions in, with a bit of yoghurt to finish. Will definitely have this one again!
  • Chop a raw (yep raw) beetroot into matchstick thin pieces - and mix in yoghurt and 'popped' mustard seeds. Indian based salad recipe and delicious..... Cooked (boiled) beetroot cold with yoghurt and lots of mint is very good salad too Add cooked beetroot to corn beef hash... yum Make beetroot chocolate cake - it's a lot…
  • I had horribly heavy periods in my late 40s, and big hormonal swings - tried the pill, and had a mirena coil put in. What a mistake. Huge body reaction and 4 years on stil have Chroni Fatigue (lost my job amd all). Wish i had just stuck to the Tranexamic Acid - which is fantastic for the heavy blood loss. Last year the hot…
  • Well done on getting your home in order! In terms of now treating yourself - I wouldn't go much further than a biscuit/cookie or two - 200 cals max, but probably just 100. Most of the calorie burn in excercise is moving your body weight around....so the fact you were seated means the calorie use will be fairly limited even…
  • Would it help to coincide your 'cheat' with a good day's walking/hiking? You could enjoy the burger/chips/brownies - but walk most of the calories off... And enjoy the birdsong too. Gradually you might get into the habit of 'earning' your 'cheats' as well.
  • You might want to try A) swimming regularly - that sorts my PF quickly and keeps it at bay. And good for you in so many other ways... B) and/or 'hanna somatics' (google it) if the stretching approach does not work Lots of 'tense/use muscle then glide ie relax muscle' in good technique swimming - might be why it works,…
  • So I am reviving this old post of mine with an update - mainly so I can think over my next steps... (4 years ago I was asking about fitness goals that were not weight orientated... And had decided on heart rate and step challenge goals, but was wondering why we set so few flexibility goals) I didn't make any of my new…
  • So happy new year all ... Welcome new faces. I plan to keep that average step count rising (i just measure walks outside the house) - it's roughly 7500 daily average. And I hope to get back to doing some swimming too... (I am in recovery from Chronic Fatigue. So i like the 3 x 8 hours sleep goal! I've had a bad autumn for…
  • Happy new year all - and well done on all the achievements in 2016. My december was my biggest average step count yet (and that's before leaving my phone home too many times). Over 7500... (Sadly my calorie intake was also at record levels! )
  • Ok - a better week. Just over 10k steps a day on average, and another 15k peak day. Jenfra - quite agree, many wonderful days here too - even the grey and misty ones are atmospheric. Life is for relishing! Machka - congratulations. So well done you... Paddlers both - well done, challenges etc sound like they are really…
  • Welcome BethAnnie! That sounds a good swim - hope you are going back for more...! So no yet again I did not swim today. I am still struggling to get to the pool - the last plan was to go when my daughter has her swim lessons. But then she broke her arm.... I may end up cancelling my membership at this rate. I am enjoyng…
