ITA with Fab140. If you need food before a workout, eat something. I'm the opposite. I cannot eat then workout as I feel sick. So I don't. There's all sorts of data supporting one or the other as the better way to lose weight - but seriously - it's what ever works for you.

Every little bit helps. If you are short on time and only have 20 minutes - get out there and move for those 20 minutes. It's better than doing nothing at all. Fitness and health are journies, not destinations, so don't get too stressed when the ride is bumpy or rushed. It will smooth out again. Just keep faith in yourself.

Now I'm really confused. I thought that the calories we were allotted here already took into consideration our basal calorie burn. So If I'm allocated 1500 calories and I do a workout that burns 500 calories, then as the 1500 calories already includes the 1 hour that I worked out, the 500 calories were all extra. And yes,…

Bamboo - NICE BIKE!!!! And what a great price!! Sounds like you have a good LBS! I'm so happy to hear it!

white potatoes are also a great carb option - they get a bad rap but are extremely nutritious (filled with potassium which is so crucial for so many things!).

Ce_Fit – hope the rain holds off until you get in your ride. Our rainy season is coming up and I’m hoping I have to spend a lot of time on the trainer – we so need the rain. Bambi – Good job at getting out there and riding again after the metric century! So, when does the hunt for your new steed start? :P Jadaigle – I’m…

Neither. Unfortunately - the reality is that fabulous abs are made 90% in the kitchen. It's what you eat that matters more than anything. Sugar, processed foods and other stuff all contribute to fluffy tummy syndrome, even if you are lean to start. That being said, if there is "fluff" over those fine muscles, then finding…

Oh, what a sweet loving husband Bamboo has!!! Oh yeah, and a killer set of cycling legs! Great job! Shorerider - great job in getting in 35 miles with the blood glucose issues. Sounds like a tough ride! I did Spinervals Recovery today. It's a 40 minute lighter trainer ride designed to spin the soreness out of the legs.…

I have to agree with always being aware of your surroundings. That you were totally unaware how long the jerk was following you scares me. I love music when I run, but I keep the music lower and I am always aware of what is going on around me. I'm 5'10 and a "big" girl (man i HATE that phrase, but it's true :ohwell:) so…

I highly recommend the Gym Series, Pyramids, Muscle Max (total body, but with several premixes) or the 4 Day Split series by Cathe (http://www.thecathenation.com/) if you are looking for well thought out and planned weight workouts with good balance and great coaching on form. She is really good, not perky, and comes…

The extra calories ARE the best, but I'm with you - how do you eat THAT much? Nice problem to have eh? I did a 60 miler today, over rolling hills. I had a total elevation gain of about 1000 feet. I have a triple and only had to drop to the middle chain ring once. Finished in 3 hours 41 minutes, and burned…

Shorerider - I'm so sorry to hear your ride was cancelled, but it sounds like you all used sound judgement! I, too, cannot believe the race was not cancelled. It's so not worth a life just to race. By the way - I love your story and I love your photo! You are such encouragement and inspiration!

WAY TO GO BAMBI!!!! You should be pretty darned proud of yourself! 62 miles on a hybrid and managing to average 12.9 mph is excellent!! Ar e you looking into road bikes? It's so exciting to pick out a new steed! Just a word to the wise - be sure to eat, though, as if you don't today, you will tomorrow with a vengence. I…

Actually, if you're arms are sore, I would give your muscles a rest. What happens when you lift is that you tear down muscle fibers and rebuild them. 24 to 48 of rest is required to really accomplish this. Even if you are using light weights, you really should give yourself a days rest to rebuild.

Shorerider - Ride STRONG!! I cannot wait to see the race report!! Today I was off the bike - took Jimmy the dog and my DH on a hike. It was a nice change of pace. Happy riding vibes to everyone! I'll be joining you tomorrow!
-
Ce_Fit - Absolutely! It should be a phenomenal ride. When I'm done, I promise to raise a glass of the best merlot to the ladies (and gents if there are any here) on the forum! I'm really looking forward to it. Bambi - my daughter's boyfriend and I did Tour for Woodside last weekend (sounds really weird I know - but he's a…

I'm 5'10 and there is no way, no matter what I weighed, that I could eat 1200 calories and survive without totally binging the next day. I won't go below 1800, but that's me. I actually don't recommend anyone eat less than 1500, but again that's my opinion.

Spinervals are DVD's (although he does have 2 or 3 CD's). They are not fancy - basically Coach Troy (or Evil Coach Troy as I call him) and a group of cyclists. But Coach Troy is a Triathlete himself and he knows how to train. He goes over technique and helps you work to build speed and endurance. They are tough - many are…

Thanks everyone for the welcome! I do appreciate it. Cyclists are such cool people! Ce-Fit - yeah, a Tour of the Wine Country is horrid. *sigh* But someone has to do it! I have a Cyclops Fluid Trainer. If I had to do it again, I'd probably get a Kinetics or Blackburn as I'm not impressed with this Cyclops - it…

Great article. I'm still trying to figure out how the average man gets 3100 mg of potassium! I struggle every day with getting enough!
-
I'd sit down with mom and dad and have a nice long talk. I understand that this situation is a little dicey, but seriously - you don't want your daughter eating that stuff on a daily basis(occasionally is fine - I'm a big believer in "All things in moderation"). It's just not healthy. Studies are showing more and more that…

Hi Adriene - How frustrated you must be!!! I've been at this for a while, so let me give you a couple of things that really helped me... First - I totally agree with people who say don't compare yourself to a man. Women tend to carry more weight and it's tougher for us to lose it. Sucks, but there's nothing we can do about…

Skittles - what seems to work for me is a combination of making sure I get enough potassium, calcium and magnesium. I take a calcium, magnesium and zinc supplement. I just got done with a tough 55 mile bike ride with lots of climbing, and I was cramp free. You may find that as you increase activity, your body needs…

I get mine whole from Whole Foods and use my coffee grinder to grind it. I get a lot and grind a bit at a time and store it in a plastic container. I love my flax seeds.

Oooh cyclists! Hi gang! I love to ride! Mike the Bike and I did the Tour for Woodside last Sunday. We did the 55 miler as it had only (?) 2600 feet of climbing. The century was well over 4000 - next year for sure though. My next event is a metric century in Sonoma called the Asti Tour de Vine :drinker:…

I track Potassium because it makes a difference for me in how I perform (I do endurance events). According to My Fitness Pal, my need is 3500 mg, but I've heard it can be as high as 4200 mg - and it's tough to get. But it's so worth it. For me, it helps prevent those horrid middle of the night leg cramps and seems to aid…

Oh I LOVE my Maui Jim's. I have never had anything but the best of customer service from them or any of their shops. I put my MJ's through the ringer. I have green eyes, so I'm very sensative to the sun, so lik you they are always with me. They have hiked with me up big mountains, handled a couple of half marathons, and…
