I've been steadily gaining weight the last two years, with no change to my diet. I lived overseas for a year with no vehicle and walked my butt off but had no loss of inches or weight. My doctor checked all my levels and my thyroid and everything is running correctly but I just keep gaining. Now she has asked me to cut back my calorie intake to 1200 a week for 2 weeks. I just unsuccessfully finished the first week of this because I'm always hungry...especially after 1:00 p.m. Is 1200 too low for a 5'10" adult??

Earn food by exercising. If you burn 400 calories then you get to eat 1600 because you will still net 1200.

I don't know if it's low or not it also depends on how much you weigh.

It seems REALLY odd to me that your doctor would recommend this. 1200 is very low, most doctor's would not recommend it. You should call her and tell her you are really struggling with it. I'd start looking for a new doctor.

I'm 5'10 and there is no way, no matter what I weighed, that I could eat 1200 calories and survive without totally binging the next day. I won't go below 1800, but that's me. I actually don't recommend anyone eat less than 1500, but again that's my opinion.
  • That has been my struggle. I've been eating 1570 the last 2 months and have been sticking to it. When I went in last week and we discussed the issues I'm having with not loosing she asked me to try this for 2 weeks and then call her back and let her know if I lost anything. We really didn't discuss exercise. I do walk 4-6 miles every other day but wasn't sure how much more I could eat when I exercise. Knowing this may help. I'm going to try to stick it out until the end of next week and then give her a call.

Put your exercise in MFP and it will tell you your earned calories.

It is a motivator for me. When it is 5 pm and I only have 300 cals left, I HAVE to work out in order to have a decent dinner.

Also, are you eating enough protein? I find if I eat more lean protein in each meal, I am never hungry. I have had no problem sticking to 1200-1300 cals(only 5"2' tho)

    breakfast
    1 egg
    slice ww tst
    1 pat butter
    strawberries

    snack 25 sea salt almonds

    lunch
    3 oz turkey
    salad fixins
    milk

    dinner
    3 oz chicken breast
    1/2 baked potato
    LF sour cream

    snack
    organic peanut butter
1 slice lf oatmeal bread toasted

just an Idea of what I eat in a day

good luck to ya! I know you will get it! :flowerforyou:

There's a thread lurking around here on MFP you could probably do a search on.. called 'Zigzaging'....something to the effect of lowing your calories a bit for a short time to see if that gives your body a boost ...then it suggest you go back up and many folks begin to lose again.

Do you eat 3 times a day only? If so perhaps try out 5-6 mini meals per days...it can make the world of difference in hungry..energy, metabolism, .....can't believe the difference it made in my days. I definitely don't get hungry, have the energy of ...well I don't know what but never get worn out anymore and it's a great thing to keep your metabolism boosted up throughout the entire day. Another great thing it does is keep your blood sugars evened out.... at 3 meals a day with such long periods of time in between you sugar level drops...insulin level kicks in...and POOF...hunger BIG TIME!

Might want to give it a try...if you're not already.......just wanted to offer what's worked well for me. :drinker: :flowerforyou:
