This. One of the reasons I quit the first time was because I was constantly checking my watch; waiting for the walking part to come. When I just had music to listen to and an audible cue to tell me when to stop running, I could just focus on the important things like trying not to throw up or pass out.

I would say just give week 1 a try and see how you feel. It's a bunch of 60 second jogs and 90 second walks. If you get pains after doing that a few times then you may need to walk more for a while, but it's hard to say how you'll progress unless you give it a try first. My one suggestion is to not push yourself much at…

^ It's written poorly because it's seething with disdain for cardio, starting with the headline. Even though as you read, he explains the point a "little" more clearly; it's trying to use shock to get people to read where if it could just stand on its academic merits, he wouldn't need it.

Wow, dissing on running but not giving any tips on what these awesome alternatives are. Great article. This sounds like it's more about people who binge eat then try to run it off, yet the majority of the article focuses on how just cardio is bad. Then he uses an example that after you've devoured a whole pizza in one…

Where is the pain? Shins? Calves? All of them? It may be as simple as changing the shoes that you wear. Shoes that don't fit properly to your running style can cause all kinds of pains. Also, the surface that you're running on. If it's a sidewalk, that will cause pain as well. As others have said, make sure that you're not…

This summer I may shave mine. It's been a long time since I've been clean shaven. Thinking I'll grow it back come fall.

"I know what you're asking yourself, and the answer is yes, I have a nickname for my penis. It's called the Octagon. But I also nicknamed my testes. My left one is James Westfall, and my right on is Dr Kenneth Noisewater."

I got the Polar FT7 a couple weeks ago and it's great. Full endorsement here.

^ Sorry, totally off topic, but whenever you post something, I want a freaking cheeseburger!

I agree outside! And on trails! Originally I only ran on sidewalks and bike paths and hated trails because of the unevenness of the ground, ankle rolling rocks/roots and daunting hills. Now I've grown to love them. I feel like I'm moving much faster on trails with the trees flying by and the hills are like mini…

This is why when you're skinny, it's mandatory to move to the beach.

Trust me, there are tons of people out there who aren't even overweight and can't run a 5K. Running a 5K is an accomplishment that you can celebrate that a vast amount of the population cannot. Don't let anyone bring you down who thinks otherwise.

Same deal as above. Used to get them a lot until I got very comfortable shoes. Also, running less on concrete and more on soft tracks or trails. If you have to rest, per the doctor, make sure you do something else that will still keep your endurance up like biking or elliptical so that you have an easier time getting back.

If the pain is bad enough that you're sacrificing your running form (ie: limping) then you should rest it until it's not an issue. There will usually be little pains that come and go while running, but you can typically push through them. If they make you limp or favor one leg over the other, then you're risking more…

I'm 33 years old and 211 lbs. When I run (30-50 minutes) on the track, my HR stays between 156-163. When I push it hard at the end of the run I typically hit 179-182.

Rollercoasters. Once I had trouble fitting into them, I knew I had a problem and needed to change.

The only thing that you could replace peanut butter with is magic. But since magic isn't real, the next best thing is peanut butter.

Ha, my wife doesn't believe that one, but I tell her not to do it every time.

If you're not planning on being very fast, don't start up close to the starting line as a lot of people will be passing you. Also, if you start in the middle/back, you'll probably end up passing a lot of the people who start off too fast and can't keep their pace, which feels pretty good. When you get to a water station,…

Not sure if this applies, but at the end of January I had what's referred to as a "calf heart attack". It was a micro tear in the calf muscle. It happened about 2 miles into my run. My calf felt tight but I ignored it until I felt a little pop and then I couldn't put any weight on my leg. The pain was not in the center of…

I've honestly never been much of a stretcher. I ran 5-5K's last year and 1-5 mile race and didn't stretch before any of them or any of my runs in training. That is...until this year when I pulled my calf 2 miles into a run. Took a month to recover so now I at least do basic calf stretches and am incorporating more…

^^^Agree C25K really works as long as you stick to it and take it slow. If you try to do it too fast you'll burn out and feel like quitting. Once you can run for 30 minutes without stopping, it's an amazing feeling.
