  • I started C25K at 295 pounds, but I had also already lost 50 pounds at that point. I waited until I felt ready, and then took it slow - didn't want to push too hard and risk injury. It doesn't so much matter your current weight as your level of activity - you can be "average" weight and still struggle with running if…
  • Grilled cheese on cinnamon swirl or cinnamon raisin bread. The salty and sweet combo is so good!
  • I had the same concern when applying for jobs last summer - I am 5'6" and even though I was about 192-195 at the time, I was down from my highest weight of 345. They can't see that on my CV or in my interview. (Though, to seal the deal, in my "other" section of my CV, I include "half marathon finisher," so they are aware…
  • I flew too close to the sun on wings of pastrami.
  • I can't recommend Wii Fit enough - it helped me so much in the beginning of my journey. I started at 345 and just walked around my neighborhood since it was all I felt physically capable of doing without risking injury. At 330, though, I had lost enough weight to use Wii Fit, and it helped me lose my next 50 pounds. It's a…
  • I have dealt with this on my whole weight loss journey. It's easy to say that the weight is the source of a lot of deeper personal issues - and sometimes, they are part of it - but weight loss isn't a cure all. The only thing losing weight does is make you weigh less physically. Emotional weight loss is an entirely…
  • Merced here! Would love to connect with SJ Valley folks. Moved here about 6 months ago from Chicago for a job at the UC ... talk about a huge transition!
  • As you get closer to your goal, you can't expect huge losses every week. Small losses are still progress in the right direction! Sometimes our bodies just need to stop, rest, catch their breath before powering forward. I started to plateau once I hit 150 lbs. lost - lost and gained the same 2-5 pounds for 6 months. Part of…
  • On my collarbones: "with every broken heart" (left) "we should become more adventurous" (right) - Rilo Kiley lyrics, love them!
  • Totally agree. That said, I love Raleighs. My Raleigh Venture was stolen and I went out and ordered the exact same one again. I'm a bigger rider, and it's a good strong bike. Got it at my local shop for $300, plus a little extra for thicker/self-sealing tires (lots of thorns on local bike paths)

  • Junyr is right - a good bike from a shop beats the best bike from Wal-Mart or Target - not only the quality and selection, but sometimes with follow-up service. My local bike shop does free bike check-ups - especially tire pressure and brake readjustment - for life on bikes purchased there. If there's a bike shop near you,…

  • I love the Celestial Seasonings apple cinnamon, it's subtly sweet. I also splurged recently on some Coconut Cocoa chocolate tea by Republic of Tea - it's tea, not cocoa, and has a wonderful sweetness even without adding any sweetener. http://www.republicoftea.com/coconut-cocoa-tea/p/V00678/ (I bought it at World Market for…
  • I spread them out in a single layer on a cookie sheet, spray them lightly with EVOO, then sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. 425ºF for 20-25 minutes. They're crispy and delicious - I like them better than french fries!
  • I actually just wrote a blog post on my decision to buy a food scale: http://www.asmallloss.com/2012/02/scales.html I've had it for a couple days, and it's interesting. MFP has a medium pear at 89 calories. When I would eat a large one, I'd just add it in as 1.5 servings, or about 125 calories. By weight, I figured out a…
  • If there's a bike shop near you, I'd go in and explain your price range and what you're looking for to the clerk. That's what I did, and they knew a ton about bikes and helped me find the perfect one, a Raleigh Venture - lovely little black hybrid bike. It only cost about $300 (plus $50 for thicker tires because there are…
  • I started at 345 lbs. and my first weight loss goal was to lose enough weight that I could use the Wii Fit (the max capacity is 330 lbs.). Between that and walking, I lost my first 50 lbs. in no time! Some of the exercises are more challenging/better calorie burners than others, but all in all, I think it's great. I still…

  • A lot of stores are making their own generic ones these days. They're usually a couple dollars cheaper at Target, for the same calories and just as delicious! I like the plain vanilla ice cream sandwiches - or the strawberry shortcake ones!
  • 1/4 block of tofu with a tablespoon of ground chocolate - blend together for a delicious and not-overly-sweet protein pudding! It's one of my favorite post-workout recovery snacks.
  • I didn't really have a style before ... at that size, I bought whatever fit, which usually meant just plain jeans and a solid color tee-shirt (which I always hid under a big sweatshirt). So now that I have more options, it's nice to explore a bit and develop my sense of style without many restrictions!
  • I have a big problem with peanut butter - it's one of my binge foods - and as I work through my recovery, I am trying to reincorporate it into my daily eating. I buy the PB pre-measured - Jif sells single-serve "to go" containers, and brands like Justins and PB&Co. sell individual serving packets. It is, of course, not as…
  • I like to mix tuna with a couple of tbsp of hummus - more protein, and totally delicious!
  • Measuring success by sizes is stressful - jeans especially, because no two stores are exactly the same with sizes. Being down that weight must feel good, no matter what the number size your jeans are. I agree with other commenters, perhaps try somewhere else ... but at -52 pounds, you've come too far. You're pretty much…
  • Great job so far! I had a similar revelation right before I turned 24. Didn't want to get any older with my health that poor - I was alive, but I wasn't living. I'm amazed at how different my life is now, all because I started with a few small changes. Now, when I start to struggle, I remind myself: "It's not easy, but…
  • Stew Leonard's (a CT/NY grocery store) makes their own rice cakes that sound like that - about 7" diameter, thin? 15 calories each.
  • I was in Chicago for a few years, lots of options out in the 'burbs. Went to a few places off of pickyourown.org - got apples, pumpkins, and did berries in the summer!
  • When training for a longer distance than I have raced before, I run three times a week. One is a long run where I gradually increase my distance but run at or a little slower than my race pace. The other two runs are shorter distance, but I focus on speed. I usually do walk/run intervals so I can go faster, then rest, then…
  • Great job! Seeing the "decades" of weight loss change is fantastic, but when the "centuries" change too - it really is a terrific feeling. 300s to 200s was very emotional for me - I, too, hadn't seen the 2 in a long time! - and it's incredibly inspirational. Like, "look at what I can do when I work hard and stay focused!"…
  • I didn't start eating my exercise calories until I started working out very intensely - when I was walking/doing Wii Fit, I kept calories low. Now that I run/bike a lot, I need to eat more. But with low intensity workouts, I don't think eating exercise calories is as crucial.
  • "Looks better" is one thing. But honestly, who is healthier? No matter what someone weighs, if he or she eats junk and isn't active, they might not be healthy. My grandmother never weighed more than 110 pounds but pretty much only ate chocolate chip cookies and grilled cheese and died of a heart attack at 64.
