  • Well, of course it's true that you can lose at any age, but I think there is something to be said for having a higher metabolism when you are young and it maybe being easier or quicker to shift the pounds. I have heard quite a few people say they used to be able to lose weight faster when they were younger, for whatever…
  • I was the same as you. In my previous weight loss attempts I've always lost 5-6lbs in the first week. This time I didn't. It was disheartening. It's going slower this time, and I don't really know why. I am putting it down to my age maybe, being in my 30's maybe I'm not losing as much/ quickly as I would when I tried in my…
  • 1520 cals. I've been doing this for about a month now and have lost 3.3kg, slow but steady. This has included a couple of days when I have gone over and a whole weekend away where I ate what I wanted, but other than that always a deficit. I usually end up eating back some of my exercise calories because I find I am…
  • Last night I had a bit of a calorie blow out in the studio with some friends. Even though I had prepped for it by having a light lunch, the calories ended up adding up to more than I expected. It made me think about mindless eating and how it can all just add up so quickly. A stuffed veggie pitta bread, some doritos and…
  • @conleywoods For sure decision fatigue is a real thing. I always start the day well with a pretty healthy breakfast. It's after lunch when I start to struggle, with all of the other demands of the day! It's a great idea to prep snacks in advance I think! :) @FatSlayer1016 Sorry to hear you had a rough day... but what an…
  • Not answering your original forum question but, I also have that arch in my back, which I found out is due to hypermobility (basically - over-flexible joints) It might be an idea to see a doctor/ physio about posture to see if you are hypermobile before doing strenuous workouts because certain exercises can be bad for it.
  • My understanding is you can't really target an area to lose fat from. You can only target an area to tone (e.g. with your calf exercises - they will most likely build muscle/ tone your calves). As someone else said, you prob lost muscle because you were exercising and walking less. The only way to lose fat is to have a…
  • Wow, what a beautiful view @ells_runs Thank you for the lovely welcomes. I have had a couple of NSV's today - a loss on the scales, plus my fiance said I didn't snore last night for the first time in a reeeeeally long time. Haha. I am putting it down to the lifestyle changes! I hope I can lose some weight, not just for the…
  • My NSV is that the gym staff now greet me BY NAME when I walk in! :D
  • Hi everyone, another new member here. I am Jess, 31 from the UK. Nice to "meet" you all! I've been overweight for most of my life really. I lost some weight with myfitnesspal a few years ago only to put most of it back on again, so I'm here to lose and try to maintain it this time. I'm on 1520 calories a day and I try to…
  • Same here. No way I could stick to 1220, I'd quickly give up if I tried. I'm on 1520 + exercise and am losing slowly but I am losing, and that's the important thing. I sometimes eat back exercise calories depending on how hungry I am. Seems to be the best way for me, but there's no 'right' answer for everyone.
  • It just depends on your lifestyle and what keeps you satisfied. For me, my partner often cooks for us both in the evening and I don't want to restrict him too much (he doesn't need to lose weight). I therefore try to eat less during the day when we're not together, so I can save calories for the evening and we can eat the…
  • I have some kind of alcoholic beverage probably about 4-5 days in an average week. I haven't cut it out since starting MFP as I think too many changes at once are not going to be sustainable for me, and it's something I really enjoy to relax. I just make sure that I only have one or two drinks and I save the calories for…
  • Lol, this is a really good point! I haven't actually mentioned anything to my family this time. Only my partner and one or two friends who I know will support me in a positive way. I'm getting any other support I need on here!
  • Ugh, yes, this is totally me. It's about emotion vs. logic I think. Emotionally when you are trying to achieve a goal, if you have a set back it can feel like a big blow, and like "what's the point? I'll never achieve this, this will keep happening, I'll keep failing" etc etc. Logically, we know that having a day or…
  • Yup, we have this in my family too. My mum serves gigantic portions, especially to my brothers (apparently if you're male you need twice as much food :D ) Over the last year or so, my brothers (early 20's) have become much more health aware and although not overweight they've changed their diets and lifestyles a lot and…
  • I think a lot of people are influenced by the high profile fast results programmes like Weightwatchers or certain diets, and that's why a lot of people think it is very hard to lose weight, foods are good or bad, and you have to severely restrict yourself to succeed. The reality of a lifestyle change, slow progress, slow…
  • Alcohol and cigarettes are both in a different category. We like them but they are proven to be harmful/ bad for us. You can't say that a donut, or any food, is inherently bad - it's just food. I'm also not sure how this would actually be implemented. It's easy to say that we should tax foods that are "bad" for us, but who…
  • It's also important to think about the wider impact of this idea of a tax on so called 'junk' foods. For example, a low income family might go to a fast food restaurant once a fortnight. It's their treat - it's affordable and a way for them to get out as a family and spend time together. This tax idea could make that…
  • It is different, though. Smoking is bad for everyone who smokes, even if only one cigarette a day. This has been scientifically proven many times over. There is no benefit of smoking other than to satiate an addiction. Pizza, fizzy drinks, donuts - they are not inherently "bad". They are food. People should be able to eat…
  • I find it inspiring if I can relate to them...e.g. if they were originally overweight/ obese, or have something in common with me... I guess if I could see myself eventually being there, or could relate to their journey, it would be inspiring. If it's someone doing something I know I'll never be able to do/ am not…
  • I've had this as well and it can be really demotivating. Although MFP says I will lose weight on around 1500 calories per day, if I don't also exercise, I don't lose. I weigh everything I eat so I think in my case it may have slightly miscalculated. I did once notice that although I hadn't lose much weight, my body fat…
  • I don't track macros too closely, but I have noticed that they are way out or even just not entered for a lot of the foods I log. So maybe like Kriss said you have to add them yourself if you're tracking?
  • It sounds like another variation on atkins/ radically low/ zero carb diets. You might lose weight but it's probably not healthy. Also pretty horrendous for the environment. I think if you are physically OK to eat a varied diet then that is the best way - to include things from as many food groups as possible.
  • Hi everyone, just joined the group also. I've been reading this thread and wow, some of you have had a real rollercoaster by the sound of it. Hugs to you guys who are struggling xx I am trying to lose some weight before starting TTC first time - hopefully in October I will come off the pill. I am in the obese BMI range…
  • Hi and welcome, that is an amazing amount of weight you've lost! Good luck with the toning up!
  • This is amazing and 55 pounds lost - what an achievement! Good luck with reaching your ultimate goal!
  • However, genetics can contribute to how many calories you shove in your pie hole. https://www.cdc.gov/genomics/resources/diseases/obesity/index.htm
  • Not usually. Only if I want to remember a recipe or exactly what meal I had.
  • Gonna be really annoying here but.... I dislike it on principle being called "beach body".
