  • Lack of control measures??!!??! Hmmmmmmmmmm like what? Does that "debunk" the data? I don't think most people understand what that WOULD have meant for the data in that documentary. Most people don't know how to evaluate a project like that and draw reasonable conclusions. "Debunked" is such a terrible word. That study,…
  • @Neandermagnon: Did you have a protein goal? Like grams/body weight or something like that? If so, was that based on a guideline or how it felt for you? Thanks.
  • If you don't know exactly what the following sentence means, then don't think you can read "science." A lethal dose of the truth. From the "science" link posted above: "There was also a statistically significant interaction between smoking and processed meat consumption (P-interaction 0.01), with mortality being…
  • weight.... its always weight.
  • There is not a pro cyclist or triathlete in the world that is not doing off-bike training, right now, in the off season. Google image search Desiree Ficker, sexy yes, but strrrrrrong. Just don't do 1 rep max of shrugs or curls with 10 minutes rest in between, LOL.
  • Currently going to go in two halves again Through late June 2013: 2-3 warmup sprint or Oly tris. Some crits and 1-2 road races. Late June through November: prep for a possible (slow) Marine Corp Marathon by... Hilly half-iron in early September Hilly half-iron in early October. Actual events still TBD.
  • Besides technical knowledge, besides accountability, besides MPOO (the motivating presence of others), coaches let you not think about all the kind of things you are thinking about now. Get a coach then try and be 100% compliant with his or her workouts. The most I have had to think was recently when coach wanted to know…

  • Congrats on finishing! The run sounds like it was frustrating a bit; maybe first race of the year symptom? I have my first tri next weekend; I am cautiously optimistic because usually the first event of the year can make me feel super odd at some point (HR, perceived effort, nausea, funny sensations in muscles, etc.) Half…
  • I was watching it live online! I about flipped out when the broadcast cut out right near the end!! RRRRrrrrrrrrrggggggggg! I need help too. It made me sign up for the half Ironman in DC. (new venue).

  • What's the worst that could happen? Usually once a year I race bikes and do a triathlon in the same weekend; once in the same day! You just feel the fatigue and lose any "snap" the legs may have had. The Sprint is SHORT, you'll be fine!

  • I have a funny podium story. So there was a brand new race in 2010, a half ultra/half-ironman (first race that made me cry like a baby when finishing, it hurt bad). The following year they added pseudo-Olympic version of it and because if my crappy year - I chose the new pseudo-Olympic distance. I usually show up to focus…
  • WOw! 35 pounds lighter, I am jealous! Congrats. Just to be clear you did the same race last year but 35 pounds heavier? I have a few this year that I plan on being 10-25 pounds lighter than the last time I did them. I can tell already on some group rides and training runs that my lighter weight is already helping me along.…

  • I would use MFP to do a "report" on your sodium intake over the last 1-2 weeks; it takes me 3-4 days of low sodium eating to get rid of the bloat from a high sodium day (like pizza for dinner). Also, you might need several days of rest. Rest is very very important for the mental game and hormones. Review your sleep…
  • Happens to me to (sometimes I do two workouts in a day) Can I recommend a book, at least a chapter, it is in "Racing Weight" by Fitzgerald. It should be called "better body composition" but there is great stuff on fueling before during and after exercise as well as managing your appetite. Water/nutrients matter a lot, a…
  • My favorite quote about that is "If it were as easy as calories-in-calories-out, then it would be that easy" Dr. Kattouf's nutrition webinar. balanced meals, timing, sleep, hydration, etc are also important teamkattouf.com

  • Big difference between those that simply monitor (meaning you look at your wrist and know what your HR is versus those that record workouts and upload to the computer easily. The website connect.garmin.com is fantastic for tracking. For uploading: a USB port is great or some kind of Bluetooth connection like the Forerunner…
