  • Bumping this up as I need some inspiration. Any new ideas now that it's spring?
  • Kimchi. Cabbage + fermentation = happy gut. Many stores are now carrying it, my favorite brand is King's, but the Melissa is ok too. I've even tried making it, quite a job.
  • I'm in for lower carb. I have a big veggie garden planted with more to come, no way am I gonna miss out on that! My latest addiction is kimchi. Let's just say everything is running smoothly!
  • What an inspiring post. I'm glad I read it!

  • I make kimchi. I put it in mason jars while fermenting at room temperature and I do screw on the tops. I unscrew the tops and "burp" them periodically. Don't know if this is authentic or not.
  • That is great! Congrats. Mine is now on a downward trend (still working on it after a surprise sky high reading in August) and I couldn't be more relieved.
  • My wake up call was a sky high A1C. My secret is always making sure I'm eating something I like and planning ahead when I eat out. I don't miss having one certain food that's higher in carbs if I'm having another food I like and I just think of it this way. No bagel, but yay, lox! I also plan by reviewing restaurant menus…
  • True fish (fins and scales), yes. Shellfish, no. Plus I don't even like shrimp. But you can bet that if I need to up sodium (not there yet) I will be guzzling miso soup, made with bonito (fish) broth!
  • Thanks for the ideas! I've eaten the turkey and chicken substitutes for bacon for years, as well as beef hotdogs.. just kinda tired of it all. Will try the almond flour, however. And you bet I'll be using the schmaltz I made for some chopped liver!!
  • Pork rinds are not my thing, but my Facebook post of schmaltz and greibens that I had just made did not get many likes! (Rendered chicken fat and chicken cracklings/rinds).
  • Hannah hommos . Lox.
  • This thread is so helpful! I've recently gotten back to LC eating, and I'm trying to recalibrate my brain to the effect that high fat is ok. Don't have to feel guilty adding that coconut milk to the Thai curry! I'd love some more suggestions for other Asian options. I especially love Thai and Vietnamese, but my mom loves…
  • Hi, new to the group. I've been doing Stronglifts off and on for a few years. Had an ankle injury that sidelined me for a long time. Today: Squat 130 Bench: 60 Row: 60 Last time: Squat 130 OHP 45 DL 130 I find I lag way behind in the upper body lifts compared to my squat and deadlift. I'm psyched to see so many ladies…
  • Try "The New Rules of Lifiting for Women" or one of Lou Schuler's other books.
  • Two things really help with with the soreness: (1) foam roller at the end of my workout on the parts I have exercised; (2) protein shake or protein heavy meal within an hour of lifting. I'm 45 and these have helped immensely with the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). You should be ok on your current schedules with the…
  • Hi there, I am a slow runner too, always have been. Around 38 for a 5K. The hardest thing for me is remembering not to start out too fast. You get in that big group of people with tons of adrenaline and it can be hard to keep your pace. I have done this so many times, started out too fast and then I have struggled at the…
  • Love Trader Joes. I think WF is overpriced but I get a few thing there now and then.
  • Don't skip ahead. You could injure yourself. Your muscles need the gradual build up.
  • You can also make up your own workout chart by adding different exercises, reps etc. and you can print it and take it to the gym (on this site).
  • You still should see your doc, but 1200 probably isn't enough, or if it is, you're not spacing it out enough and your blood sugar is crashing, which can cause dizziness. You didn't mention when you get dizzy, ie during exercise or whateve.
  • I totally agree with this approach. I am already doing this on my own. And my stats are remarkably simiilar to the OP's calorie ranges. I don't even log my exercise on MFP. I just eat some extra calories when I lift weights (I lift heavy). Usually it comes out to an extra snack before I lift and a protein shake after. I…
  • I loved the Chubby Jones podcasts for Couch to 5k. They are free on itunes and she has several versions. The music is sort of indie club type. She's hilarious.
  • Books: The New Rules of Lifitng for Women Women's Health Big Book of Exercises Stronglifts 5X5 (website)
  • Squat rack, barbell and plates. Can do numerous combination weight lifitng exercises on it.
  • Weight loss is 80% diet. Weight lifting alone won't do it. I find that I actually want to eat more when I lift. In the book they discuss finding your basal metabolic rate, factoring in calories for your activity and then maintaining a slight deficit from that, around 300 lbs. I don't think that would be enough for an obese…
  • I had about the same "base" as you and I started at the beginning of couch to 5K; however, during the first few weeks I only did the workouts two times each instead of three. When I could no longer do the next workout easily on the first shot then I did the full three repetitions for that week. You may even need to repeat…
  • Hi all, have been on the sidelines due to an ankle injury. Gradually coming back, but I'll have to work my way back up gradually on the squats and deadlifts due to the pressure on the ankle. Frustrating. I think it's cool to see how much people are lifting. It strikes me that other ladies can lift quite a bit on the upper…
  • I have PCOS and am type 2 following gestational diabetes that did not go away after I delivered. I've been on metformin for 5 years. I did lose some weight when I first started it. I've had no issues with it whatsoever. I often take it on a empty stomach with my other meds, no problems. My vitamin D was a bit low, and I do…
  • I'm nursing a sprained ankle now, but I have been lifting heavy for over a year. I did NROLFW for and a few of the NROL routines. This summer I did Stronglifts 5X5 and really increased my strength/weights. I was not tracking my calories at that time and I did gain a little weight, some of which was not muscle because it…
  • Nice to see some other ladies on the SL thread!!! (Nothing against you guys, of course!)
