How important is cooling down really? Is it something worth taking the extra minutes to do? Or is the walk to the locker room and a cold shower good enough?

I currently do strength training for half an hour, and then cardio for 30-45 min. One of the guys at my gym told me I would get better results if I focus on cardio until I lose the weight - then start back up on the weight lifting.
