What is the best way to calculate how many calories/ day I should be consuming?

I would LOVE to have friends that can help me understand the calories used versus calories remaining thing. Like if I need 1500/day and I eat 1350 and exercise 500 it says I still have 650 calories remaining. I just don't understand it. Please add me as a friend and help me to understand this system.
