This is fascinating ! Take a look...
That's exactly what my doctor said. I went in today for my 6-month appointment, and when he looked at my bloodwork results, he was *very* impressed. He said this is what it looks like when the lab gets people's samples mixed up. The numbers were from 1 year ago (pre-diet), 6 months ago (lost 25-ish pounds, very light…

10-ish months, first road race
Its been about 10 months since I started MFP. I hit my target weight (lost about 45 pounds) a while ago, and much to my surprise really got into exercising ! On Sunday, I ran the garden of the Gods 10 miler, my first race. TBH, recurring calf problems kept me from doing any real running before the race, so I trained by…

it happened : jog ==> run
I've been real slow about getting into running. I had some calf-strain issues, so I've had to rely on walking/hiking/biking to get any real aerobic exercise. Most of my runs have included plenty of walking to make sure I didn't re-injure myself. And even when I ran, I always said to myself "I'm not really running, I'm just…

Hit my goal ! 45 lbs 7 mos
Yesterday my scale read 185.0, my MFP goal weight ! My start was somewhere around 230 in August. No pics yet, b/c I've decided I'm going to lose another 10 lbs. A little bit of pudge left here and there. It's been 7-ish months, and TBH, I kind of forgot about the goal. I decided early on to just work on making this a habit…

does exercise become less effective over time ?
I started MFP back in September, and counting calories + regular walking worked great. To my surprise, the numbers even worked out right : when my net calories were set with a goal of losing 2 pounds/week, that is pretty close to the amount I actually lost. Lately, though, the numbers don't match up. Even though my net…

2 words : Woo Hoo !
I just crossed under the 200 pound mark this morning. Two months ago, I never would have imagined it was possible ! Thanks, MFP.

I'm Overweight !
Good News : I checked my BMI and I'm not "obese" any more ! Not that BMI is such a meaningful number, but the first time my doc called me obese in a matter-of-fact tone, it did sting a little. So, for today anyway, I'm deciding that BMI *is* meaningful !

added new punch(es) to my belt
Okay, so at first it was kind of cool to feel my pants falling down all the time. Then, after the novelty wore off, it was starting to be just an annoyance. So over the weekend I (finally) got around to buying some new pants and shorts. With the new size pants, my favorite leather belt which I wear every day was too loose.…

THEM : "Is that a new shirt ?"
ME : "No, I just haven 't worn it in a while..." Many years ago I bought a polo-style knit shirt and for some reason never wore it. Too nice to throw out, but I didn't like the way it fit. It made its way to the back of the closet, and I'm *not* one to clean out my closets. In the meanwhile, I switched to exclusively…

strength maintenance
So I'm just getting into stretching and strength training at home. I've got a fitness ball and some dumbbells. I've bought a couple of books and browsed through many more. My goal is just to be "fit". Muscles tight and strong enough to feel good, not worry about back or joint pain, not lose too much muscle mass as I reach…

fat loss from specific areas ?
I'm just wondering if the kind of exercise you do determines where on your body fat loss occurs. Anybody know ? For example, do more situps/crunches cause fat in your mid-section to burn off faster ? Does anything burn visceral fat (around your internal organs) faster than subcutaneous fat (just under your skin) ? Mainly…

three weeks in : pants falling off
For us guys, it's kind of hard to say why pants stay up at all; somehow they just do. But I'm at about 15 pounds lost (since all-time high), and my pants have changed from "feeling kinda loose" to "starting to fall down". At night, I just pull them off without undoing my belt. Pretty cool feeling. Guess I've got some…

Already successful
It's been under a month since I tentatively decided to start eating a little healthier and do a little exercise. And even less since I made the decision to actually lose weight and get in shape. For me, its the first time in 30 years. Measurement-wise, the results are beginning to show. I'm down from an all-time high of…

theory question about calories and weigh loss
I've never been a dieter and I'm just learning about calories and weight loss. I have a theory question I just wanted to check with the "experts". At age 17, I weighted 175 pounds. Before starting to diet, at age 47 I weighed just about 235. The increase was slow and steady. And it works out to about 2 pounds per year. In…

beginner Q's about stability ball + dumbbells
Hi all, I'm male, 48yo, and just beginning to diet and get in shape. My cardio workout right now is brisk walking, and I'm very happy with that. I'd like to add something in the "strength training" category, but something very modest. I would describe myself as "average" build (i.e., no weakling), but I've always had…

measuring waist accurately
Hi, I'm brand new to this whole dieting thing and have never measured my waist before. I'm male, with a pretty classic "spare tire" fat distribution. So I'm measuring my "waist" as they call it, but its really at the navel. I do it with my shirt off, and the tape wrapped around horizontally. At first I thought I could just…
