Best Group on MFP for the big guys
The legends of old tell of a race of giants. Men of great power, strength, stamina, and stunning good looks that used to roam the countryside looting and pillaging all who stood before them. Villagers cowered in fear and hid their women, their beer, and their bacon. It was to no avail however. The great warriors came forth…

What constitutes a victory?
So in a spur of the moment decision I signed up for a 5k last week. I have lost a lot of weight over the past couple of years and figured it was time to push my boundaries. I went into this 5k with some expectations of what I could accomplish. I wanted to jog the first mile, it lasted instead for about 200 yards. Once I…

Only half way there, but pretty kick a** NSV today
So I have recently moved to a tiny down in the middle of GA. The only people I know so far are the ones that I am related to. We visited a new church today and I was talking to a guy that I met as we were milling around afterwards. I explained that I had lost a lot of weight so far, but had a lot more to go. I told him…

Weight loss as proxy
For most that are friends of mine, this might seem a little out of character. I try my best to always be upbeat and positive. When things are stagnant, I focus on the NSVs and how hard I have been working. I have to admit that it isn't working today. I have been stagnant for over a year now. With both the weight loss as…

a tale of two bars
Three years ago I went out with some of my best friends from High School. We had a blast, it was so good to catch up. Later that night when I got home, one of the wives started posting pictures on Facebook from the evening. It pretty much devastated me. I didn't realize what I looked like. I hated it. I had been hiding for…

Cardio vs Lifting
Ok, we haven't had a new topic in a little while and I have been working on my own mix lately. When I started seriously trying to lose weight, I focused on the part that had always been my achilles heel. I hated cardio and saw it as the only way to lose weight. I had frequently been considered strong but fat and had always…

Work and weight loss
I am having a ***** of a time lately keeping work and this weight loss from affecting each other. I basically work in sales as an advisor. I have been stuck in a 20 pound range now for a freaking year. I keep a handle on it most of the time, but it is like I am brand new all over again. I used to walk in to a potential…

sorta childish NSV
Ok, so I have had an NSV in the past that I have shared, but yesterday it was made all the sweeter. I can admit it, this is really childish, but I have to be honest, it felt good. I am a naturally competitive guy. I would imagine most of us in the group are. It is one of the things that has made it so hard for years to get…

exercise and aggression
Sooooo, I am at home for lunch and tell my wife that I am pumped up and in the mood to either fight or f***. She promptly tells me to try not to get arrested. :grumble: Anywho... I have realized recently that the more I exercise, and specifically the more frequently I lift, the more aggressive I am. I don't have anger…

If you liked Arthurs' Never give up story
The filmmaker is trying to finish the original documentary. The clip they just released is the one we have all seen about Arthur and his phenomenal change. Help if you can, or don't. :) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1564946265/inspired-the-movie

DDPYoga and Arthur
Some friends of mine in a weight loss group have been working with the former Professional Wrestler Diamond Dallas Page to help promote his yoga series of workouts. I gotta be honest, the first time I heard about it I laughed. I am probably going to try it myself now. You have to see what Arthur did with it, 140 pounds…

Challenge next week for those with kids
I was trying to think of some challenges that we could put to the group. Just some goals to work for every once in a while that could be fun. The first one I thought of was to see who could burn the most calories doing something with their kids in a given week. We all list our families as one of our biggest motivators. It…

Manly man NSV
I had the strangest but best NSV over the weekend. I have owned my truck for 11 years now. It has over 280,000 miles on it. I had to adjust the seat forward the other day for the first time ever!

Formal Procedures
As a fledgling order of great magnitude it behooves us to formalize our proceedings in such a way that we can legitimatize ourselves through coordinated activities and organized ritual. basically we need like a slogan and handshake and ****. maybe official titles you know, so we look serious

Atlanta Chapter?
How many of us live in the Atlanta area? I know at least 2-3. Maybe we should call a meetin!

What is truly inspiring to me
It is amazing on here to see how much progress that so many people have made. I have some on my friends list that have lost 2-300 pounds. There are marathon runners and couch potatos, single 20 somethings and 60 year old grandmothers. There are a lot of people on here that don't feel like they are making the progress that…

weight lifting while in a calorie deficit
OK, so I know that you shouldn't be able to put on muscle mass while running a deficit. To increase muscle mass requires a surplus. I have increased mass while losing weight, but I am also still extremely obese and I know that can be an exception. So for the scientific types out there, what happens when someone lifts heavy…

Motivational thought for the rough days/weeks
I had a rough week last week. I even gained 4 pounds. I thought a lot about it the last two days. Over the months, years, and even decades that it took you to put the weight on, how many totally awesome days and weeks did you experience during that whole time? It is unreasonable not to expect a similar number of down days…

Calculating calories when using pork
When you are inputting a recipe (in this case a soup) how do you calculate calories added when you use a ham hock while cooking?

Enough negative, what is the BEST thing someone has said or
We get a lot of threads on here about how mean people can be, and how others sabotage our attempts to change. What is the nicest thing anyone has said or done since you started? I will start with the sweetest. It was my daughter a few years ago. She was probably 4 years old. I mentioned that I was going to start trying to…

I watched "Catfish" this weekend

Why/when do you eat too much?
I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out what caused me to eat so much in the past. I have especially been looking into what can cause slip-ups now that I am tracking everything and finally seeing progress. I used to blame over-eating on stress or boredom. I have figured out though that it is more nuanced than that.…

"Medical Weight Loss"
Every other time I go to the gym, the guy that runs the place keeps trying to sell me on their clinic's Medical Weight Loss program. It is a couple of shots a week with every B vitamin you can think of as well as HCG and some other stuff. It is seriously getting on my nerves. Why is it that the more progress you make the…

BMI is a joke
So if you plug my height//weight/age in to the BMI calculator it says that my normal weight range should be from about 128-174 pounds. Well, I went to use a Bod Pod today and found out that my fat free mass (bone/muscle/organs/etc) is 205 pounds. Pretty safe to say that I am not going to reach 0 body fat and lose 30 pounds…
